The Book Nook: "From Hell" (Alan Moore & Eddie Campbell)

In my spare time, I enjoy collecting comics.  Fortunately, for you- there are quite a few horror comics out there... During the late 19th century, a vicious killer by the name of Jack the Ripper stalked the alleys of Whitechaple- bringing death, fear, and an undying legend to the annals of history. This is his story... Alan Moore is known in the comic world for amazing stories:  " Watchmen ", " V for Vendetta ", and " The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen ".  He continues that trend with " From Hell ".  The story is interesting, engaging, and flows smoothly, while presenting us with a unique look at the legend of Jack the Ripper.  The characters are well crafted, and fascinating.  There are numerous historical references made that add depth and texture to the plot. The art is great.  It plays nicely with shadows and textures to create a very suspenseful mood.  The sketchy nature of the drawings reflects the dirty, dingy atmosphere of th...

Review: The Boys Season 1

Amazon's new series The Boys is the perfect antidote for those who are tired of all these superhero movies and TV shows. It plays within the rules of the genre, while turning the tropes on their collective heads. And it's about as un-politically correct as you can get, which makes it even better. It should come as no surprise The Boys is based on a comic-book series of the same name, and was created Garth Ennis, the evil mastermind behind Preacher and some of the best runs on Judge Dredd and The Punisher. The man likes to push things as far as he can, good taste be damned, and I applaud him for that.

Review: Slasher: Solstice

The first season of Slasher was a great bit of TV horror exploitation that didn't get the credit it deserved, with titles like American Horror Story and Channel Zero hogging the spotlight. But I dug it, and dug it a lot. Season two was kinda a bore. There were some decent kills, but nothing like the first run of episodes. And everything moved so slowly, with boring and unlikable characters. I yawned a lot. Now we've got a third season with another new storyline (yup, the cast remains the same, but each season is a new story with a new killer). Is the third time the charm? Let's find out.

Album Review: At Mission Dolores - Last Night Outside Her Apartment

Shawn and I are hardcore movie fans, but we're big into music too. We love to play music on our show, and expose new musicians and bands to the masses. But we've never really dabbled in music reviews here in The Basement. So I'm pretty stoked to give the new record by At Mission Dolores a listen, and share some thoughts here for you Basement Dwellers.

How about some music From The Basement?

Shawn and I are known as the movie guys. The eight to 10 minute movie guys on Radio NL 610 AM Kamloops, actually. But we're also big into music, especially Shawn, who's band Burn It All  (pictured above) is ready to tear things up in a big way. We've recently started highlighting bands on our show during our end credits, and we're putting out a call to musicians who want their music featured on a podcast that gets thousands of listeners an episode, and plays all over the world.

From the Corner: "Birth of the Living Dead" (2013)

As a fan of horror movies, I enjoy seeing how the genre has evolved over the years, and learning a bit about how some of the most influential movies came to be made, and the role they played in making horror what it is today. In the final years of the turbulent 1960's, when race riots, decreasing support of the Vietnam War, and growing social unrest were spreading like a virus across the United States, a small, low-budget horror film was made.  Despite uncertainty about it's reception and ultimate Fate, this little film made by some guys from Pittsburgh, went on to change the world of horror forever.

From The Corner: Dead Noon

I'm back again- with yet another swim in the horror genre- this time around, we take a shot at  "Dead Noon " (2007) An old west outlaw rises from the grave in modern times, bringing death with him ...

The Month of Horror Day 1: Evil Dead (2013)

Basement contributor Matt Bellamy has taken it upon himself to watch and review at least one horror movie a day for the month of October . . . because he's awesome that way! To kick things off, Bellamy takes on "the most terrifying film you will ever experience."   Director Fede Alvarez , stand up, take a bow! Thank you, thank you, thank you for doing your best to avoid CGI bloodshed that has become so rampant in modern horror and keeping things (for the most part) real, practical, and old fashioned! For my part, that's what was most enjoyable about this remake, the wanton and over the top carnage and brutality--what more could one ask for in a horror flick?? Okay, sure, character development can certainly be nice as well which this one made an OK attempt at. It wasn't particularly frightening but... the blood! Whoa! More blood than I have ever seen in a mainstream horror relea...

The Basement will "return" . . .

Yeah, I know; technically we haven't been gone and only informed you a couple of weeks ago that we're taking a break. But a plan is in motion for our return to a regular schedule. Check it: we will be back as a podcast starting in October. Two shows a month. One review per show plus some other cool shite. We promise you will not be disappointed. One of the October podcasts will be our annual Halloween Spooktacular, 'cause we love Halloween. At that same time regular updates will resume on this site. Two to three a week guaranteed. Plus whatever thoughts we want to share on the flicks we watch. Until then, things continue as they have the last couple of weeks. Check back here often, and at our Facebook group and fan page . Plus shit goes down on Twitter @camethebasement . I've also got some cool stuff going on with Dr. Action and the Kick Ass Kid and Moe Porne. Gonna be fun! Stick with us! The end is the beginning

After four years of kick-ass podcasts , radio shows and almost non-stop site updates, Shawn and yours truly are taking a break from The Basement . Are we finished? No. But there won't be regular episodes and site updates for the time being. Suffice to say, we won't return for a fifth season on 92.5FM CFBX Kamloops come October. Why? Not because the show has lost popularity. We still knock 'em dead on a weekly basis. This past season was our most popular yet and the last two podcasts, including the June special, have been among our biggest episode debuts ever. You love us. You really love us! But four years is a long time bust ass the way Shawn and I do. We've got families and day jobs on top of everything Basement related. Plus we're hip deep in a couple of film projects that will come to a head here in the next couple of months. As awesome as us Basement Dwellers are, something has to give. So we humbly set aside our Basement duties for the time being....

Shawn and Greg versus The Bay and Silent Hill: Revelation

The Bay Shawn: I’m pretty tired of saying how tired I am of all these “ found footage ” films . Seriously. Enough. If this is the last one I have to watch, (which I know it isn’t), I’d be happy. I can’t even believe I’m going to say this but... This found footage flick is polished. Probably the best one I’ve ever watched. Other found footage movies can take some lessons here. Also, thank you for using more security, police and Skype footage. Makes for a less shaky, vomit-inducing watch. This flick captured the feel of a good disaster movie. Captured the intensity, the panic, the news reports all fell together nicely. Lead character…if you will, was an amateur reporter, but made for an interesting fit. I dug this found footage flick. So there. I’m even going to give it a Good. Good luck impressing me with found footage again! Greg: First up we have The Bay from the creators of Paranormal Activity . Which, right from the start is shown in how the film was mad...

Shawn and Greg versus Gless and The Mockingbird

Gless Shawn: I now have a NUMBER one most hated movie. I know I understand this movie, and can say it IS definitely film festival material. For sure. Not my style at all. It began in darkness and each minute forward, it became more and more abrasive, like petting a cat backwards. I ended up loathing it by the end. The actors were not what I was used to, as they seemed to be "theatre" people. Ha ha. Which is fine, but not my thing, even less when coupled with this artsy, articulated wordy venue. I'm sorry, but I found it too complex, in a sense, to enjoy. That is my simplicity, and makes it an UGLY. Greg: Hey Basement Fans! It's Game Time With Greg, not Jay this week. We have a couple of movie reviews for you guys from Herbivore Productions. First up we have the self-inflicted, image-distorted and mental-struggle horror movie called Gless. We will start off with a warning... it's all black and white . So don't try to fix your TV . W...

Jason and Shawn versus Deadfall and Extracted

Deadfall Jason: Deadfall was a tough movie to figure out. I had no idea where it was going the entire running time. Nor did I know if it was a crime movie, drama, love story, character study or bad to the ass action flick. In the end, it was all of these. But ultimately went nowhere, which is its one big flaw. Eric Bana was awesome. He was the baddest motherfucker around; a complete asshole. Director Stefan Ruzowitzky knows how to shoot a movie. The opening car crash and snowmobile chase at the midpoint are thrilling. There's lots to like in Deadfall, but not enough to make me want to watch it again. A Bad from me. Shawn: Eric Banana, you were able to do something Nicolas Cage will never be able to do. I hated you. I loathed a movie with "Eric Bana" in the credits. However, YOU redeemed yourself here. I really dug this movie, your performance, along with other veteran/exciting actors. I liked the story, although there were several incomplete side stories...

Jason and Shawn versus Citadel and The Awakening

Citadel Jason: Fuck man, this has it all. Shorts shitting moments, heavy drama, and even a tender moment or two. Credit must be given to writer/director Ciaran Foy, who keeps a tight reign on this story and never lets events happen to serve the script. This is a story that unravels organically, and I bought every beat. Favourite moments? I have several. The scene where Tommy takes his wife off life support is heartbreaking. Ditto when he manages to save his daughter from the creatures. The scene where he dances with his baby girl is also touching. The scares, particularly during the opening half hour or so, are plentiful. Kudos to leading man Aneurin Barnard . He deserves an Oscar for his work here. He starts off weak and ends strong, and is 100-per-cent convincing throughout. I also dug James Cosmo 's priest. Any priest who can swear like a sailor and knows how to make and set plastic explosives is a hero in my book. Citadel is a thrilling scare machine with he...
