The Month of Horror Day 1: Evil Dead (2013)

Basement contributor Matt Bellamy has taken it upon himself to watch and review at least one horror movie a day for the month of October . . . because he's awesome that way! To kick things off, Bellamy takes on "the most terrifying film you will ever experience."

Director Fede Alvarez, stand up, take a bow! Thank you, thank you, thank you for doing your best to avoid CGI bloodshed that has become so rampant in modern horror and keeping things (for the most part) real, practical, and old fashioned! For my part, that's what was most enjoyable about this remake, the wanton and over the top carnage and brutality--what more could one ask for in a horror flick?? Okay, sure, character development can certainly be nice as well which this one made an OK attempt at. It wasn't particularly frightening but... the blood! Whoa! More blood than I have ever seen in a mainstream horror release! It literally rains crimson at one point, that's how ridiculous it gets and you really can't help but laugh at it and I'm fairly certain that's the intended reaction.

No, it didn't re-invent the wheel, it's not "the scariest movie you will ever experience" or whatever the poster's hyperbolic tagline was but it did a solid job of honouring the original and was pretty darn entertaining, albeit slightly forgettable, so I consider this one of the better horror remakes out there!
