Review: Like A Virus

Short films can be a tough medium to work in. You've got a limited amount of time to hook an audience, establish characters, and tell a compelling story. Fortunately the team behind Like A Virus was up to the challenge. Produced by Donny and Erin Broussard, and directed by Gabriel Veenendaal, Like A Virus is about Felicity, a woman with the preternatural ability to help unsettled spirits pass on peacefully. When a trickster invades her visions, she struggles to make sense of her latest assignment. It must be noted Felicity is played by our own resident bastardette, Amy Wickenheiser! And she rocks this movie! It's so good to see Amy front and centre. This is a dark character, and she brings much emotion and complexity to Felicity in a few short minutes. I also appreciated that Like A Virus deals as much with suicide as it does with the supernatural. Suicide is a topic few still like to talk about, but Like A Virus does so effectively. I've been there, at the point of...

Amy Wickenheiser returns and Cry Havoc

It's the morning after our latest broadcast From The Basement, which means it's time to unleash our Saturday podcast once again! This week Jason and Shawn were stoked to welcome co-host Amy Wickenheiser back to the show after a four-year hiatus! Amy has been a busy gal, appearing in horror movies and touring the festival circuit with some short films. And yes, she'll tell you all about it. She also sounds off on Netflix's Extraction, prompting a renewed conversation with The Basement Boys about the action blockbuster. What impressed her and is she ready for more? Stick with us! And stay tuned as Jason, Shawn and Amy take on Cry Havoc, an action-horror hybrid from Rene Perez and starring Charles Bronson lookalike Robert Bronzi. This one is Death Wish meets Friday the 13th, but is it worth your time? There's only one way to find out, and that's to push play on the player below and enjoy!

Amy Wickenheiser cries Havoc for Extraction

Tonight, former Basement co-host Amy Wickenheiser joins Jason and Shawn at 6:05 for this very special social-distancing episode of From The Basement. How special, you ask? Well, newer listeners are in for a treat as Amy is an accomplished actor and podcast personality who's worked with the likes of Michael Pare and Alyson Hannigan. And she knows a thing or two about moviemaking, so there. She joins The Basement Boys for a further discussion on Netflix's Extraction, giving her perspective on the action blockbuster. Plus she, Jason and Shawn sound off on the action/horror hybrid Cry Havoc, which pits Charles Bronson lookalike Robert Bronzi against a Jason Voorhees-style killer. Sound like fun? Is the genre mashup worth your time? Stick with us! And stick around as Jason, Shawn and Amy provide the lowdown on the latest streaming offerings, and share what they've been watching to make you better informed with your viewing choices. The fun begins right after the six o...

Amy Wickenheiser returns to The Basement

It's been a wild ride for The Basement these last couple of years, with us returning from the dead, joining the Radio NL 610 AM Morning Show, and making the leap to prime time. As awesome as all this has been, one key element was missing... Amy Wickenheiser! That will be corrected NEXT WEEK when The Basement's own Bastardette returns May 8! New listeners might not be familiar with our lovely co-host. She joined the show during our 2015/2016 season, and returned for a brief stint in 2017. She's an actress who starred in John Fallon's The Shelter alongside the legendary Michael Pare, appeared in the indie horror hit You Might Be the Killer, as well as a little known franchise called The Twilight Saga. Amy is also a seasoned podcaster who has a passion for comic books, especially ones featuring Spider-Man. Shawn and I are stoked for Amy's return. Hopefully she's able to stick with us for awhile. So mark your calendars; Amy is back May 8, only on Radio...

Review: You Might Be the Killer

What's more fun than a movie about a killer hacking and slashing his way through a group of camp counsellors? How about one where one of said counsellors might be the killer, but he doesn't know for sure? That's the premise behind You Might Be the Killer, a razor sharp, and often comedic, spin on the old killer-in-the-woods trope. Apparently inspired by a Twitter thread that deconstructed the slasher genre, this is a fun way to kill a Friday night, if you'll excuse the pun.

John Fallon's The Shelter hits Vimeo On Demand

Long-time fans know Shawn and I have a strong connection with filmmaker John Fallon and his directorial debut The Shelter. Which means we're super pumped to report the critically acclaimed film, which the L.A. Times called "remarkably ambitious," is now available to watch anywhere in the world on Vimeo On Demand!

Zygote and the return of Amy Wickenheiser

The Basement is two bastards and a bastardette once more as everyone's favourite female Spider-Man fan -- Amy Wickenheiser -- returns to the studio! What's Amy been up to and what does she have to say? Stick with us!

The return of Amy Wickenheiser

Jason and Shawn have been back at it for more than a month now, but one key player in their podcast game has been missing... Amy Wickenheiser!

One week out . . .

Back in late September 2010, I posted an article to this blog reminding Basementites Shawn and I were a week away from our live debut on 92.5 FM CFBX Kamloops. I also encouraged people to tune in for, what we hoped, was a fun hour of movie-related banter and music. Funny how history has a way of repeating itself.

The Basement returns to The X

Whoever said you can't go home again didn't know what he/she/it was talking about, because We Came from the Basement is doing just that. That's right, Jason and Shawn, along with their lovely co-host Amy, are bringing the show back to 92.5 FM CFBX Kamloops!

Merry Christmas from The Basement

That headline pretty much sums it up: Shawn, Amy and I would like to wish our listeners and readers a very Merry Christmas and the happiest of New Years. This was a big year for us, as Shawn and I came back from self-imposed exile and, with the help of the beautiful and talented Amy Wickenheiser, resurrected The Basement into something new and exciting. And many of the people who stuck with us before continue to do so, so thanks to you, our audience and fans, and to Amy for coming on board.

The Halloween Spooktacular V

Last Halloween, Jason and Shawn played the cruelest of tricks on Basementites everywhere . . . they quit! Fortunately, they suck at quitting, and the Basement Boys are back for their annual Halloween Spooktacular! And Halloween just isn't Halloween without The Basement's No. 1 Scream Queen -- Brooke Lewis! That's right guys and ghouls, Brooke is back to help Jason, Shawn and new co-host Amy Wickenheiser entertain your asses.

A new era begins in The Basement

A year ago, on Halloween night, Shawn and I called it quits. We'd spent six seasons reviewing and chatting about the genre B-movie, and basically burned ourselves out. There really is too much of a good thing. But our passion for podcasting -- and sitting around bullshitting while enjoying a few brews -- remained. Hence we slowly got The Basement up and running again. Thankfully, our loyal Basementites didn't tell us to go fuck ourselves, and it's been a joy entertaining you all on a semi-regular basis.

Amy Wickenheiser in the house

Jason is off on assignment -- sick in his bed -- but the lovely and talented Amy Wickenheiser joins Shawn for a special edition of We Came from the Basement. Who is Amy Wickenheiser you ask? For one, she's one of the stars of John Fallon's directorial debut The Shelter starring Michael Pare. So she's an actress. But she's a podcaster and personality for Geek Drunk , a site dedicated to nerd culture, and Killer Film , which is dedicated to, well, film. AND she's a producer as well. Among many other things. She and Shawn talk her career, The Shelter, and the art of nudity and sex in film. But they also discuss The Walking Dead, the dangers of posting spoilers on Facebook, the difference between Americans and Canadians, and many other nerd and non-nerd related topics. Yeah, the show has become a bit all over the map. Wanna fight about it? Didn't think so. They talk about that too, by the way. This show is a lot of fun, and offers a different vibe from...
