Review: The Boys Season 1

Amazon's new series The Boys is the perfect antidote for those who are tired of all these superhero movies and TV shows. It plays within the rules of the genre, while turning the tropes on their collective heads. And it's about as un-politically correct as you can get, which makes it even better. It should come as no surprise The Boys is based on a comic-book series of the same name, and was created Garth Ennis, the evil mastermind behind Preacher and some of the best runs on Judge Dredd and The Punisher. The man likes to push things as far as he can, good taste be damned, and I applaud him for that.

Review: The Punisher Season 2

Marvel's era on Netflix might rapidly be coming to an end, but at least it's going out with a bang with The Punisher's second season. I'd read early reviews, with some critics saying the show is unevenly paced and a bit on the slow side. Not sure what they were watching, or even smoking. This season is every bit as good as the first and, in some ways, better.

Review: Daredevil Season Three

While the Mighty Marvel Cinematic Universe has proven a powerful force at the box office and among fans, Marvel's Netflix lineup is a bit shaky. Each series has its own merits (maybe not Iron *spits* Fist) but only The Punisher has managed to hold my interest through the full season. The Punisher and, of course, Daredevil. Daredevil is hands down the best of the Marvel Netflix shows, and one of the few remaining now that Iron Fist and Luke Cage have been cancelled. The series continues in fine fashion with this third season. In fact, after a slow warmup, this could be the strongest run yet for Matt Murdock and company.

Micro Review: Incredibles 2

Is 14 years too long between movies? Back when The Incredibles came out, there was no MCU, so Pixar's super-hero flick was the biggest and most, well, incredible, depiction of a comic book put on the silver screen. Nowadays, there's a new super-hero movie out every few months, and visual effects are at the point where the four-colour world of comics can be brilliantly realized. Doesn't this hurt the impact of an Incredibles sequel.

Micro Review: Avengers: Infinity War

I don't know what impressed me more about Avengers: Infinity War -- the fact I have to rethink my Top 10 Favourite Movies of All Time list, or Scarlet Witch's cleavage. A statement both bold and crass, but true.

The Netflix Top 5 and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Those pretentious bastards and bastardette are back with more podcast goodness designed to pleasure your ear holes. This time Jason, Shawn and Amy are fulfilling a fan's request to break down what the Basement Dwellers consider the best of the best on U.S. and Canadian Netflix. That's right, between Canucks Jason and Shawn, and transplanted Canuck Amy down in the Good ole U.S. of U., the crew feel they've got a pretty good handle on what's worth watching on the popular streaming service. This is the first of what could become a monthly-ish instalment on the show. Because, with so many TV shows, docs and movies to choose from -- and programming added all the time -- there's certainly more than five things worth watching. What do the Terrible Trio go with this go around? Stick with us! Plus, a hardcore Superman fan like Shawn, and comic-book expert like Amy, aren't going to let the drop of the much anticipated Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer g...

Zoolander 2, Deadpool and the Bad Boys sequels

Never say never again, never. This is the lesson Jason and Shawn have learned and learned again as The Basement returns for a third time. And the third time is the charm as The Basement Boys unleash a new podcast with a shiny new format. How new? For one, gone are the movie reviews that made Jason and Shawn popular in the first place. In fact, a good portion of this show is spent slagging film critics of the mainstream and Internet variety. Ballsy or stupid? Stick with us!

New Images from the Netflix Daredevil series

I dig me Daredevil. A lot. He was pretty much my favourite comic-book character growing up. And I even liked the 2003 Ben Affleck flick up and to a point (sue me). So I'm super stoked that Marvel and Netflix have produced a series based on the blind crimefighter. The show doesn't debut until April 10. And yes, I've already cleared my schedule for the weekend. Until then, there's a slew of new images from the series that hit the Interwebs today. And we've got 'em for you right here.

New pics, trailer for NBC's Constantine series

The long running Hellblazer comic book is all but ready to make the leap onto the small screen this fall in the new TV series Constantine, and the network's marketing arm is well and truly in full swing. This weekend a nifty three-minute trailer appeared, giving audiences an impressive look at the program. And earlier today a couple of new pics of star Matt Ryan surfaced, promising the actor will at the very least look exactly like the popular anti-hero .

Captain America: The Winter Soldier trailer brings the noise

This preview for Marvel's latest, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, be no trailer for a super-hero movie . It be a trailer for a damn fine looking action flick. One the wife and I are keen to see. Wanna know why? Just watch: See! I don't know what the team at Marvel eat for breakfast, but they've done a fantastic job translating their comic-book universe into a cinematic one. Perfect casting, nicely woven mythology that continues from one film and character to the next. I'm in awe of what they've done. Winter Soldier looks to continue that trend, and they've recruited Robert Redford . That's right, Robert Fucking Redford! Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) struggles to embrace his role in the modern world and teams up with Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), to battle a powerful yet shadowy enemy in present-day Washington, D.C.  Anthony and Joe Russo direct the flick, which hits theatres April 4. Jason's Top 5 non-comic book superhero movies

And by non-comic book I mean not based on a comic book, yet still clearly a film inspired by the four-colour world many of us Basementites grew up reading. These are flicks that embody the spirit of the superhero genre, but are original works by the filmmakers. 5) Sky High More of a kids' flick to be sure, but still a surprisingly fun time at the movies. Kurt Russell, Bruce Campbell and Mary Elizabeth Winstead all own in this film, and director Mike Mitchell keeps things light, breezy and with the right balance of satire and respect for the genre. It's a lot like The Incredibles , only not quite as good. 4) Darkman Believe it or not, this flick was my first introduction to the mad genius of Sam Raimi . It also, for a time, was my favourite movie of all time. Crazy, campy and ultraviolent, Darkman IS a comic book brought to brilliant life. And it made Liam Neeson a bad ass long before Taken came along. If you haven't seen it, get on it. There's enough wild ...

Rest in Peace Department comes alive July 19th

The past few years have seen many comic books being adapted for the big screen and the small screen - and they've run the spectrum from The Avengers to The Walking Dead .  This summer will see a few more of them, including "Rest In Peace Department". German director Robert Schwentke will be directing this adaptation of of the Dark Horse comic, which is going by the shortened name of "R.I.P.D".  Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges have been tapped to star in this Universal Pictures foray. Reynolds plays Nick Cruz Walker- a recently murdered cop who agrees to join an undead police force keeping the supernatural peace in the hopes of finding the person responsible for his death. This movie has the potential to be as cool as the first "Men in Black" movie... or as lame as the third one. "R.I.P.D." will be in theatres July 19th. Jason and Shawn versus Stolen and Dredd

Stolen Jason: I want to point out right off the bat that, unlike Shawn, I am not a Nicolas Cage hater. I've liked his work in The Rock, Con Air, Gone in 60 Seconds, Bringing Out the Dead and a number of mid-to-late 90s films. But the man's star has fallen hard. Stolen is proof of that. Maybe it's because he's flat broke and has to take every film that comes his way, but Cage phones it in here. He can be a fun and quirky actor, but he's just going through the motions in Stolen. He's boring, just like the movie. There's technically nothing wrong with Stolen. It's well made and, essentially well written. But the action is nothing better than a TV movie, save for one great car-jump trick inside a parking garage. Otherwise it's boring foot and car chases, plus a lame fistfight or two. Yawn. Been there, done that. It didn't take long for Cage to fall from award winner to Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. Stolen is just the latest entr...

Joseph Gordon-Levitt on for Sin City: A Dame to Kill For

As far as I'm concerned, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is the best actor working today. From Brick to Inception, The Dark Knight Rises to Looper, the man can do no wrong. And let's not forget Third Rock from the Sun and Halloween: H20. No bullshit. Now Gordon-Levitt will co-star in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. According to Deadline he plays Johnny, a part originally offered to Johnny Depp. The cast also features Mickey Rourke, Clive Owen, Bruce Willis, Jamie Chung, Rosario Dawson, Jessica Alba, Dennis Haysbert, and Crystal McCahill. This time around Dwight McCarthy (Owen) plans his vengeance against the woman who betrayed him, Ava Lord, while Nancy (Alba) copes with Hartigan’s death. I'm sure there will be a lot of the ultraviolence. If this is even half as good as the first Sin city, it'll still be a damn fine time at the movies. Sin City: A Dame to Kill For is scheduled for release Oct. 4.

Superman in chains! A poster for Man of Steel

If an image can erase any doubt that director Zack Snyder and producer Christopher Nolan are doing something completely different with Superman it's the poster below. I mean, just look at it! Now what do you think? I like it. Although purests might take issue with what is turning out to be a very un-Christopher Reeve spin on the character, I'm up for something different and gritty. Ditto him being viewed by us puny humans as an alien instead of a saviour. Anything that makes the character interesting again is OK by me. Man of Steel opens June 14, 2013. We tip our hats to JoBlo.com for digging up the poster.

Karl Urban talks Dredd 3D in this featurette

Who's psyched for some Dredd 3D? All of you? Good. You can stay. Shawn and I are pretty convinced the upcoming adaptation of the popular British comic book character is gonna own. And advance buzz out of the festival circuit -- most recently TIFF 2012 -- is almost overwhelmingly positive. So here's hoping the film lives up to the hype once it hits on Sept. 21. Below is a featurette that shows a bunch of new images and has Dredd himself, Karl Urban, and the character's creator, John Wagner, talking up the hero. Urban is perfectly cast, in my opinion. In case you don't know what director Pete Travis's film is all about, here's the rundown: In a violent, futuristic city where the police have the authority to act as judge, jury and executioner, a cop teams with a trainee to take down a gang that deals the reality-altering drug, SLO-MO.  Here's the featurette. I am the law!

Jim Carrey on board for Kick-Ass 2?

Sure sounds like it. In fact, the folks over at Bloody Disgusting are pretty damn convinced that Carrey is in the sequel to the 2010 comic book adaptation. Kick-Ass 2: Balls to the Wall director Jeff Wadlow has stated that Carrey was in the running for the role of Colonel Stars. Today Wadlow tweeted, “6 days till we start shooting… and we officially have our Colonel. Alrighty f’n then! @ChloeGMoretz @MintzPlasse @donald_faison #kickass2.” According to Bloody Disgusting, Christopher Mintz-Plasse then sent a tweet asking who got the part. Kick-Ass creator Mark Millar wrote back , “Clue – he lives with 200 raccoons and parrots, owns the mask of Loki and named by Spielberg as a genius.” Sounds like Jim Carrey to me. Kick-Ass 2 is scheduled for release on June 28, 2013.

Justice is served in this Dredd 3D TV spot

There's less than a month to go before Dredd 3D hits theatres and I gotta admit, I'm psyched for this one! Why, you ask? It's an R-rated Judge Dredd movie written by the man who penned 28 Days Later and Sunshine -- Alex Garland. And it stars Karl Urban, who deserves to be a movie star more than most movie stars. Sure, there have been complaints about the casting (Rob Schneider was in the Stallone version), size of the helmet (get a life) and that the plot resembles The Raid (this was written first). I say stop your bitching and get ready to enjoy what looks to be a violent B-movie blast. And early reviews promise the same. The TV spot below shows a lot of what we've seen before, only with added Dredd dialogue that just oozes cool. I'm ready for this movie and have marked Sept. 21 on my calendar. Bring it!

If they can't save the Earth, they will make it laugh: The Avengers gag reel

Normally I'm not a fan of gag reels, especially ones that play over the end credits of movies, but I have to admit, there's some pretty funny shit in this one from The Avengers. It's probably the funniest I've ever seen. The gag reel, along with a slew of other goodies, will officially be unleashed when The Avengers is released on DVD/Blu-Ray Sept 25. But you might as well have a gander at it now. It's funny. Trust me. And Jeremy Renner is clearly not a Star Trek fan. Anyway, enjoy the video :)

A first look at Dredd

That's Judge Dredd to you, comic fanboys! And this looks like it's a huge departure from the overblown, yet still entertaining in a bad sort of way, Stallone vehicle from the mid-90s. For one, this is going to be hard-R. Two, It doesn't look like Dredd's taking his helmet off, which is true to the British 2000AD source material. And there's no Rob Schneider to be found anywhere, praise Jebus. Based on the below trailer, this is a simple story of cops versus drug dealers, only set in the future. That's all I need, thank you! In a violent city where the police have the authority to act as judge, jury and executioner, a cop, Dredd, teams with a trainee to take down a gang that deals the reality-altering drug, SLO-MO. Dredd hits theatres Sept. 21, and will cost you three extra dollars to watch. Despite that, I am keen to see this one.
