Black Widow hits Disney + in July

In a move that should surprise no one, word dropped today the long-delayed release of Black Widow due to COVID-19 has officially come to an end. Scarlett Johansson's film will hit theatres AND Disney + on July 9. Marvel Studio's mastermind Kevin Feige spent months denying this would happen, but the lingering pandemic means there's still much uncertainty as to when cinemas will return to normal. In the meantime, studios like Warner Bros. and Universal have had much success with simultaneous home and theatre releases. So attitudes at Marvel have obviously changed. It'll cost $30 to rent Black Widow, which is basically the price of two movie tickets. I'm more than willing to pay that. Shawn and I have said time and again this is where movies are heading. Those who want to have the theatre experience can go, while the rest of us enjoy at home on opening day. What say you? You down with seeing Black Widow at home? Source: Coming Soon

Marcus Flor vs. The Black Dahlia (2006)

Sometimes filmmakers can really fumble a concept, as they did with The Black Dahlia. From everything I knew about this story before hand, I was expecting a movie about the old-fashioned, 40s culture being shocked by this senseless, motiveless murder. What I got was a convoluted, tone-deaf replay of 40s and 50s detective flicks. While it's fine for a movie to take you by surprise, this felt like a total deviation from what should've been. The film spends little of its two-hour running time on the actual Dahlia murder, and most of it on the messy conspiracy involving the two main detectives. In the end, they eventually tie the big mystery back to the titular murder, but it feels very tacked on. It was almost like the movie forgot what its point was, and made a last-minute scramble to stay on-brand. What definitely didn't help is the almost cocaine-fuelled pace of the plot. Every shot went by incredibly fast, giving the audience little time to process what was happenin...

Into the MCU: "Iron Man 2" (2010)

It's Wednesday again, and you know what that means, right? Right!  It's time for another sojourn into the Marvel Cinematic Universe!  This week's trip takes us to 2010's " Iron Man 2 "... Tony Stark discovers that the miniature arc reactor that's keeping him alive is actually slowly killing him.  Growing reckless and more morose as he contemplates dying, he searches for an alternative. Meanwhile, a ghost from his father's past comes forth with the intention of getting revenge for the sins of the father... While I wouldn't say that " Iron Man 2 " is as good as the first one, it is still a fairly solid movie for the franchise.  You can see that the actual building blocks of the MCU are starting to be put in place before the big team-up movie, " The Avengers ".  I loved that the story is much more character based than action based than many comic book movies- and deals with some pretty serious themes, such as facing our ...

Black Widow trailer promises an MCU espionage extravaganza

If audiences truly want a strong female lead, they need look no further than Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow. The character has been kicking ass with the best of them in Marvel Comics since the 60s, and she came fully into the public consciousness with Iron Man 2 back in 2010. Although she met a heroic end in Avengers: Endgame, there's still lots to explore from the character's past, and that's exactly what the upcoming Black Widow movie is going to do. Yes, it's a prequel, and it looks pretty damn awesome. Check out the trailer now: I am so sold on this! Some complain the MCU movies have a formula, but it's that formula that is appealing to fans. They're all similar enough to deliver the goods, but different enough to remain engaging. Cinema or not, they work. And I'm looking forward to seeing this one come May 1. Who wants to bet Black Widow makes more in its first showing than the entire run of the Charlie's Angels reboot? Source...

The Proposal, First Man, Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween and Bad Times at the El Royale

Jason and Shawn are back and ready to throw down over an action-packed short film in this, the extended cut of Friday's segment on the Radio NL 610 AM Morning Show. What's the short film? It's called The Proposal, and comes by way of long-time friend and collaborator John Fallon, and rising martial arts star Marc Natoli. And it killed it this past week at the Sitges Film Festival in Spain.

The Captain America: Civil War trailer is here

Like fanboys needed to know anything else other than the official trailer for the much anticipated Captain American: Civil War has finally appeared online. That, as Stan Lee would say, is 'nuff said. But we have to say something more, don't we? How about it comes out in May? It does. There. Now go watch it.

Jason versus Captain America: The Winter Soldier

The dust has settled, the hype his over, and almost everyone and their dog has watched Captain America: The Winter Soldier . Which means it's my turn to weigh in on Marvel's latest follow up to The Avengers . Steve Rogers struggles to embrace his role in the modern world and battles a new threat from an old foe, the Soviet agent known as The Winter Soldier.

Monday Retro Review: Eight Legged Freaks

There was a time when David Arquette was a box office draw (kinda), Scarlett Johansson was relatively unknown, and Kari Wuhrer starred in a TV show called Sliders . During this wondrous era, a giant spider movie called Eight Legged Freaks came out, and it starred all of them. But was it good? Stick with me! A variety of horrible, poisonous spiders get exposed to a noxious chemical that causes them to grow to  monumental proportions. Then they attack a small town.

Shawn versus Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Shawn here, reporting in, sir. Last weekend our "free movie tickets" expired.  We had to use them up. Wasn't much playing at our local theater, that we could all go see as a family, that wouldn't cause someone to fall asleep or eat all the popcorn during the previews. So, we settled on Capt'n America. I didn't enjoy the first Cap very much, so I wasn't looking forward to this. But I did enjoy The Avengers . Here's the thing.  If the movie, derived from a comic book , doesn't give me eye candy, I'll read the comic.  The first Captain America fell short there and was too long in the story, in my opinion.. What they did in the second one, was similar to how stories are laid out, in cartoon series' of The Avengers or Justice League...for example.

Take a look behind Under the Skin

And who better to take viewers behind the scenes of Jonathan Glazer 's Under the Skin than its sexy star, Scarlett Johansson ? Yeah, I couldn't think of anyone else either. What I do find amusing is that The Basement is giving so much press to a movie that really isn't up our alley. I mean, why would we watch an erotic sci-fi movie starring Scarlett Johansson?

Matt Bellamy versus Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Very good, but not quite great, Captain America: The Winter Soldier  is definitely entertaining, with solid acting and an engaging plot. However, it's nothing you've never seen before. Cap is finally a more interesting character though, so that's a plus. I liked the action, but there were no real set pieces that blew me away. It was, for the most part, fairly grounded and not full of unbelievable CG like some more recent Marvel movie . Hey, Thor 2 and Iron Man 3 , what's up?

Reach your full potential with this Lucy trailer

We primed Basementites for Luc Besson 's upcoming sci-fi/action flick Lucy just last week. Given the response, you're all looking forward to watching Scarlett Johansson whoop some ass. Now you get to see her do it, as the first trailer launched today.

ScarJo is sexy with a gun in this Lucy pic

I don't know how the super-powered-chick-action-flick (say that 10 times real fast) Lucy slipped under my radar, but I'm ashamed to say it did. For one, it stars everyone's favourite hottie Scarlett Johansson , who we've given a lot of love to on this site due to the upcoming sci-fi movie Under the Skin .

A pair of Scarlett Johansson's assets on display in new Under the Skin poster

I honestly couldn't think of a better headline than that. Sexist yes. Sue me. It's late. But this new poster for Jonathan Glazer 's sci-fi flick Under the Skin does show off Scarlett Johansson 's lovely legs. I know most of you thought boobs right off the bat. But no, it's her legs.

Scarlett Johannson gets naked in this Under the Skin trailer

That headline is pure tease. Although I have no doubt the sexy star of Jonathan Glazer 's thriller Under the Skin gets naked in the film, there is only a suggestion of such in the preview below. Sorry. Well, not really. For the record, this doesn't look like my kind of flick. It looks very weird and Kubrik. But some folks are into that kind of thing. Maybe if I'm in the mood for some naked Scarlett Johannson . . .

Girl's Eye View: Don Jon

Allow me to quickly introduce myself: My name is Kara, and I live over at www.karaschatter.com . I have no experience in the movie industry, other than watching and appreciating them. I thought I would offer up my movie reviewing skills, or lack thereof, to The Basement to give readers a female perspective on movies , new, old, good, and bad.  I will say right off the bat that when I saw the trailer for Don Jon on TV I wasn’t 100% sure what the movie was about. I knew that Joseph Gordon-Levitt both directed and wrote it, that Scarlett Johansson ’s character catches Gordon-Levitt’s character watching porn , and that Gordon-Levitt sings an awesome rendition of Marky Mark & the Funky Bunch’s “Good Vibrations.” (Because who hasn’t sung like that when they’re alone in the vehicle?) So, moving onto the movie -- in a nutshell, it’s about porn. Yep. Bow-chicka-wow-wow. The main character , Jon (Gordon-Levitt), is obsessed with porn and loves it more that the...

Captain America: The Winter Soldier trailer brings the noise

This preview for Marvel's latest, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, be no trailer for a super-hero movie . It be a trailer for a damn fine looking action flick. One the wife and I are keen to see. Wanna know why? Just watch: See! I don't know what the team at Marvel eat for breakfast, but they've done a fantastic job translating their comic-book universe into a cinematic one. Perfect casting, nicely woven mythology that continues from one film and character to the next. I'm in awe of what they've done. Winter Soldier looks to continue that trend, and they've recruited Robert Redford . That's right, Robert Fucking Redford! Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) struggles to embrace his role in the modern world and teams up with Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), to battle a powerful yet shadowy enemy in present-day Washington, D.C.  Anthony and Joe Russo direct the flick, which hits theatres April 4. Alfred Hitchcock wants you to turn off your cell phones

In what has to be one of the cleverest viral marketing ploys for a movie I've ever seen, we bring you this PSA from the Master of the Suspense himself -- Alfred Hitchcock. And he would like you to turn off your cell phones during the movie. The great Anthony Hopkins brings the director to life here, as he does in the upcoming biopic Hitchcock, due out next month. This is awesome. Pure awesome. And very much in line with the way Hitchcock used to introduce his TV series and films. Directed by Sacha Gervasi, Hitchcock stars Hopkins, Helen Mirren, Scarlett Johansson, and Jessica Biel. Watch, share and enjoy.

Witness the birth of Psycho with this Hitchcock trailer

The modern horror movie wouldn't exist without Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 classic Psycho. And judging from the below preview for Sacha Gervasi's upcoming biopic Hitchcock, it was a film no one wanted the master filmmaker to make. Few directors are as deserving of a biopic as Hitchcock. And it looks like Gervasi and screenwriter John J. McLaughlin have picked the perfect thread -- in the story of Psycho's trip to the screen -- to hang such a film on. I'm in! What a cast too: Anthony Hopkins, Helen Mirren, Scarlett Johansson and her boobs, Jessica Biel. The list goes on and on. Hell, even Ralph The Karate Kid Macchio gets in on the action as screenwriter Joe Stefano! This movie looks great. I actually look forward to seeing it. Hitchcock opens in limited release via Fox Searchlight next month.

Some pics from the Hitchcock biopoc

We haven't featured much on Sacha Gervasi's upcoming biography on the life and times of famed director Alfred Hitchcock because, well, we just haven't. Back off about it! Now that we've scored a couple of pics from the film, which is due out next month, we figured what the hey -- let's post 'em. The film is a love story between influential filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock (Anthony Hopkins) and wife Alma Reville (Helen Mirren) during the filming of Psycho in 1959. Fleshing out what really is a great cast are Scarlett Johansson as Janet Leigh, Jessica Biel as Vera Miles and James D'Arcy as Anthony Perkins. Yeah, I might have to see this. Above is a pic of Hopkins in classic Hitchcock profile and below is the lovely Johansson as Leigh. If anything, the casting for this is perfect. We'll have to see if the film is as good.
