Neill Blomkamp off the RoboCop remake

Little more than a year ago we told you District 9 director Neill Blomkamp was on board the pending RoboCop reboot at MGM. This was pretty cool news as Blomkamp's penchant for violence and social commentary seemed a perfect fit for the franchise. And he was intent on making it a sequel to the original film, much as the new Halloween was, and would ignore the sequels, TV series, and lacklustre remake. Well, not any more he's not. Check out why from the man himself: Off Robocop. I am shooting new horror/thriller and MGM can’t wait/ need to shoot Robocop now. Excited to watch it in theaters with other fans. N — Neill Blomkamp (@NeillBlomkamp) August 15, 2019 And there is no rejoicing... Funny how studios work. You'd think creativity and talent would trump a need to get something out to the masses. But I've dabbled in this business for nine years now, and shouldn't be surprised this is not the case. My enthusiasm for more RoboCop has wained... but I am...

Skyscraper and Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation

Jason and Shawn return one more time before a two-week hiatus, with an all-new episode featuring their latest appearance on the Radio NL 610 AM Morning Show with Howie Reimer, plus a bunch of other cool shat. That's right, the Basement Boys talk Dwayne Johnson's latest effort, the Die Hard in a skyscraper action flick Skyscraper, plus the Adam Sandler animated Sequel Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation.

District 9 director to helm RoboCop sequel

And we're not talking a sequel to the 2014 remake either. Nope! Neill Blomkamp will direct a sequel to the 1987 Paul Verhoeven classic that starred Peter Weller and coined the phrase "I'd buy that for a dollar." Sweetening the deal: the script for RoboCop Returns is by Michael Miner and Edward Neumeier, who penned the original film, with a polish by Justin Rhodes, who scripted the upcoming Terminator.

RoboCop (2014), The Penny Dreadful Picture Show and an interview with Mike Mendez

Big Ass Spider was not only a surprise hit with audiences, but it quickly won over Jason and Shawn to become a Basement favourite. Plus the episode in which The Basement Boys reviewed the flick is one of the more popular in the Basement archive. So it's only fitting Jason and Shawn interviewed Big Ass Spider director Mike Mendez in what turned out to be a lively 15 or so minutes of film conversation about the movie , its origins, and how it fits in with Mike's other work: the supernatural thriller The Gravedancers and the horror/comedy The Convent. What does the man have to say? Stick with us!

RoboCop reboot outgrosses The Lego Movie

To be clear, the RoboCop remake made $2.8 million on it's opening day , which was a Wednesday , while The Lego Movie took in $2.1 million, it's sixth day of release. There are a couple of ways to look at this. One, the reboot beat out the No. 1 movie in American , which made almost $70 million in three days. If The Lego Movie, which has uber strong word of mouth and is loved by everyone I know who's seen it (child and adult alike) then RoboCop could do quite well this weekend. Thursday and Friday numbers will tell the tale.

RoboCop throws down with ED-209 in this new clip

Finally, we get to see some of the action on display in the new RoboCop , which hits theatres next month. Given the flick is rated PG -13 for gun violence , there's an appropriate amount of shooting in this clip. Guns, guns, guns, as Clarence J. Boddicker once said.

New RoboCop TV spot will take you dead or alive

We're less than a month away from the release of the RoboCop reboot, and I'm still primed to see it. Sure, this isn't the RoboCop I grew up with. And, as Suzanne Cappelletti pointed out, the black suit does make him look kinda like a rejected Cylon. But this still looks like a decent bit of Hollywood escapism. Would I have been happier with an R-rated RoboCop? Yes. But this is 2014. That just doesn't happen.

RoboCop PSA warns against drunk driving

One of the best things about the original RoboCop were the newscasts and fake TV ads scattered through the movie. With this PSA warning against drunk driving, it looks like the studio behind the remake is going after that same vibe . . . while cramming in some new footage at the same time. Although not as awesome as those commercials in the original, this is still a neat and timely idea. I'll give them props for that. Hopefully the remake incorporates something like this into the finished film. RoboCop stars Joel Kinnaman , Michael Keaton , Samuel L. Jackson and Gary Oldman . It hits theatres everywhere Feb. 12. RoboCop remake hit with a PG-13 rating

Which should come as no surprise. There's no way modern Hollywood business types, AKA sissies, would take a chance with an R-rated RoboCop . The modern film business is all about putting asses in seats, and the best way to do that is go PG-13. Granted, most PG-13 movies are more violent than the R-rated movies of the 80s, but I doubt we'll see a dude get melted by toxic waste or another dude shot to pieces by ED-209. Sigh. Jose Padilha 's RoboCop carries a PG-13 rating for intense sequences of action including frenetic gun violence throughout, brief strong language, sensuality and some drug material. What's it about again? In 2028 Detroit , when Alex Murphy ( Joel Kinnaman ) -- a loving husband, father and good cop -- is critically injured in the line of duty, the multinational conglomerate OmniCorp sees their chance for a part-man, part-robot police officer. Michael Keaton, Samuel L. Jackson and Gary Oldman co-star. The flick lands Feb. 12. Source:...

Latest RoboCop trailer thanks you for your co-operation

Two things about this new trailer for the RoboCop remake: 1) I hate to say it, but I like what I see. 2) It will do nothing to sway those in the Internet community who don't want the flick to exist. I don't either, but director Jose Padilha has taken the ideas planted in Paul Verhoeven 's original and run with them. This is a remake that brings something more to the table than a retelling of the old story. I will see it on that merit alone. And it's got Michael Keaton as a corporate bad dude and Samuel L. Jackson using the phrase "robophobic." Sold! Now for the trailer, bitches: In 2028 Detroit , when Alex Murphy ( Joel Kinnaman ) -- a loving husband, father and good cop -- is critically injured in the line of duty, the multinational conglomerate OmniCorp sees their chance for a part-man, part-robot police officer.  The new RoboCop shoots up theatres Feb. 12. Dead or alive, it's the RoboCop remake trailer

Aside from the fact the world hasn't screamed for a RoboCop remake, nor does it need one, this trailer isn't half bad. Not at all. For one, Jose Padilha 's flick brings enough new cards to the table that remaking a 26-year-old movie almost feels justified. And I dig the cast, including Michael Keaton , Gary Oldman and Samuel L. Jackson . As for Alex Murphy /RoboCop, I'm curious to see what The Killing 's Joel Kinnaman brings to the table. I certainly got me some goosebumps when he uttered that classic line, "Dead or alive, you're coming with me." And yeah, the new suits looks better in motion, but can't hold a candle to the original. Judge for yourselves, and sound off: When Alex Murphy -- a loving husband, father and good cop -- is critically injured in the line of duty, the multinational conglomerate OmniCorp sees their chance for a part-man, part-robot police officer. The new RoboCop hits theatres in February. Source: JoBl...

Jason's Top 5 non-comic book superhero movies

And by non-comic book I mean not based on a comic book, yet still clearly a film inspired by the four-colour world many of us Basementites grew up reading. These are flicks that embody the spirit of the superhero genre, but are original works by the filmmakers. 5) Sky High More of a kids' flick to be sure, but still a surprisingly fun time at the movies. Kurt Russell, Bruce Campbell and Mary Elizabeth Winstead all own in this film, and director Mike Mitchell keeps things light, breezy and with the right balance of satire and respect for the genre. It's a lot like The Incredibles , only not quite as good. 4) Darkman Believe it or not, this flick was my first introduction to the mad genius of Sam Raimi . It also, for a time, was my favourite movie of all time. Crazy, campy and ultraviolent, Darkman IS a comic book brought to brilliant life. And it made Liam Neeson a bad ass long before Taken came along. If you haven't seen it, get on it. There's enough wild ...

Proto-RoboCop?

Hey, folks.  Mike S popping in once again to bring you some more movie related news.  While cruising around "Arrow in the Head", I came across their little article about the " RoboCop " remake. It seems that the official look of the new RoboCop is still being kept classified as " Top Secret ", but pictures of a early RoboCop prototype (ED-208 Humanoid Drone) have been released.  Just look at the picture above, and you've got it.  ED-208, eh?  Looks a lot like the Iron Man armour to me.  This makes me wonder if the beloved ED-209 will make an actual appearance... and if so, how radically different will they make it? Judging from the MGM and Sony released synopsis, I get the feeling this movie isn't going to stray too far from the original release: In ROBOCOP, the year is 2029 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Their drones are winning American wars around the globe and now they want to br...
