RoboCop remake made $2.8 million on it's opening day, which was a Wednesday, while The Lego Movie took in $2.1 million, it's sixth day of release.
There are a couple of ways to look at this. One, the reboot beat out the No. 1 movie in American, which made almost $70 million in three days. If The Lego Movie, which has uber strong word of mouth and is loved by everyone I know who's seen it (child and adult alike) then RoboCop could do quite well this weekend. Thursday and Friday numbers will tell the tale.
But this is a heavily hyped studio movie. That Wednesday number should have been higher. Even A Good Day to Die Hard, which opened during the same frame last year, debuted with $8 million on opening day (Thursday) and took in $33 million by Sunday night. And it too is a known brand.
One day does not a box-office future tell, but I'm curious to see how the new RoboCop performs. I'm gonna say somewhere between $25 and $35 million from Friday to Sunday. Place your bets.
What do you all think? Is the future of law enforcement going to take the box office dead or alive?
