Family Movie Night: Scoob!

Scooby-Doo is a cartoon franchise that just won't die, and I'm thankful for that. It's a childhood favourite of mine, and never gets old, although I do. The latest reboot comes by way of Warner Bros. and was intended to be in theatres right now. COVID-19 changed all that, so the WB saw fit to release it straight to Digital, continuing a trend I hope all the big studios embrace because my family and I are 100 percent on board with watching new movies at home. But what about the movie, you say? Scoob! is one part origin story, one part reinvention of the Hannah Barbara characters for a new generation of kids. It's beautifully animated, and pays tribute to everything we love about Scooby and the gang, while bringing them into the modern world at the same time. The jokes come fast and furious -- and are mostly kid appropriate -- while the plot moves equally so.  It turns out Scooby-Doo is part of an epic legacy that could unlock a door to the underworld. And the evi...

Review: Spenser Confidential

I became familiar with Robert B. Parker's Spenser with the 80s TV series Spenser For Hire. The show starred Robert Urich as the tough Boston detective, and the great Avery Brooks as his smooth and shifty sidekick, Hawk. The show was standard episodic stuff, but good for its type. Spenser wasn't born as a TV character though. He's the hero of some 40 Parker novels, and remains popular to this day despite his creator's death. So it was only a matter of time before the character was resurrected for the screen. Along comes Spenser Confidential, with Mark Wahlberg taking over for Urich, and Winston Duke filling in as Hawk. Wahlberg's long-time collaborate, Peter Berg, directs from a script by celebrated screenwriter Brian Helgeland. That's quite the pedigree. And I'm sure Netflix is hoping for a franchise out of this one. Given how much I enjoyed Spenser Confidential, I am too. Now, this isn't a big action blockbuster, nor is it much more than a pum...

Mike S revisits Planet of the Apes (2001)

Some franchises are interesting enough to warrant a reboot. But sometimes, the reboot isn't as interesting as the original. 2001's " Planet of the Apes " by Tim Burton is one of those reboots. The story is an interesting variation on the story from the original movie series- but the execution of it was less than stellar.  It lacked the themes and message of the original- which is what made the original a sci-fi classic.  The film comes off as unintentionally silly, and unforgettable. The characters weren't horrible- but weren't memorable.  The only decent character that I enjoyed was General Thade.  While he's a little over the top, I still really thought he was a stand out character compared to the others.  The rest were just kinda... there. The acting wasn't too bad- though once again, the stand out performance was by Tim Roth as General Thade... possibly because of his intensity and over the topness.  The rest were enjoyable enough to s...

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, Instant Family and Widows

Jason and Shawn return in this, the first extended cut podcast in three weeks! The event also marks a new milestone for The Basement Boys, as it's the first they've record live on Facebook!! What does this mean for the future of the show? Not much changes really. Although there's some mugging for the camera that can only be seen when watching the video on We Came from the Basement's Facebook page .

Mile 22, Crazy Rich Asians and Alpha

Summer is winding down, but that doesn't mean Jason and Shawn are! In fact, they're back once more with a look at this weekend's new releases and a review of Millennium After the Millennium! That's right, The Basement Boys sound off on the documentary that was the focus of a feature interview just a few short weeks ago. How do they feels about Troy Foreman and Jason Morris' ode to the influential 90's TV show? Stick with us!

Mile 22 goes Alpha, plus a review and junk

We're down to the last couple of weeks of summer break, which means the big movies have all but played themselves out. However, two wide releases still want to compete for your  movie-going buck, and that means the Basement Dwellers have some talking to do with Howie Reimer on the Radio NL 610 AM Morning Show.

Sicario 2: Day of the Soldado and top Canadian entertainment

It's a national holiday in The Truth North Strong and Free, but that doesn't mean Jason and Shawn take the time off. There's a show to present for your ear holes!! And yes, this is once again an extended edition of Friday's segment, where The Basement Boys joined Howie Reimer on the Radio NL 610AM Kamloops Morning Show to talk movies worth watching this weekend.

The first Transformers: Age of Extinction trailer is here

Huh!?! That is not what I expected. I mean, the robots are there. The patriotic flag waving is there. The hot chicks and explosions aplenty are there. But something about this preview for Transformers: Age of Extinction feels different than the previous three Transformers movies .

Mark Wahlberg front and centre in Transformers 4 poster

If you think the Autobots and Decepticons are the stars of Transformers: Age of Extinction, think again. If this new poster for Paramount's summer blockbuster is any indication, the man of the hour is Marky Mark himself, Mark Wahlberg . Oh, and some bitchin' sword/gun thingy. Check it:

Jason versus 2 Guns

Nothing says the work week is over like a couple of brews, some violent bloodshed and a pair of boobies. Throw in a cast that includes Denzel Washington , Mark Wahlberg , Bill Paxton , and the hotness that is Paula Patton (and her boobs) and you've got a winner, right? Right? A DEA agent and a naval intelligence officer find themselves on the run after a botched attempt to infiltrate a drug cartel . While fleeing, they learn the secret of their shaky alliance: Neither knew that the other was an undercover agent . Truth is, 2 Guns isn't as much fun as it should've been. Yes, Washington and Wahlberg have a great chemistry, Paula Patton is hot and shows her boobs, and Paxton owns every scene he's in. But, and this is a heavy but for an action flick, there just isn't enough on-screen carnage to satisfy my end-of-the-week bloodlust. Yes, there's a lot to enjoy in 2 Guns. And I did like my one watch for sure. But I'm not sold on the idea of watching...

The Month of Horror Day 22: The Swarm

Basement contributor Matt Bellamy has taken it upon himself to watch and review at least one horror movie a day for the month of October . . . because he's awesome that way! And Bellamy has The Basement buzzing with his latest entry. It's my site. I can make all the bad puns I want. Wanna fight about it!?!   A movie that would make Nicolas Cage in ' The Wicker Man ' proud--"NO!! NOT THE BEES!!!". ' The Swarm ' is easily the worst entry this month as just about everything in this "Man vs. Bee" horror flick is wall-to-wall atrocious. What were they even thinking!? Actually, for a time in the 70's, the threat of Africanized killer bees migrating to the U.S. was a very real possibility and people freaked out about it. Yes, killer bees can be found in some of the southern states but it was not anywhere near the apocalyptic scenario many feared however before...

Girl's Eye View: 2 Guns

Allow me to quickly introduce myself: My name is Kara, and I live over at www.karaschatter.com . I have no experience in the movie industry, other than watching and appreciating them. I thought I would offer up my movie reviewing skills, or lack thereof, to The Basement to give readers a female perspective on movies, new, old, good, and bad.  Oh Denzel. Oh Mark. Oh my sanity! I’m not sure what there isn’t to like about this movie; there’s great acting by a couple of Hollywood’s finest, gun-slingin’ action, drugs, money - How can it get any better? 2 Guns was a great movie for what it is. It doesn’t confuse you, there’s no twisty plot twists, just good ol’ fashion fun. Denzel Washington plays an undercover DEA agent and Mark Wahlberg plays an undercover Navy SEAL. Neither of them have any idea but somehow join forces to rob a Mexican drug lord’s cash-stash at a bank. Shit hits the fan and well, they stick together to figure what the F is going on. ...

The Happening: The End is happening..

12 With 12 days to go until the Mayan end date, the world is starting to get a little edgy.  Maybe the Mayan's knew that the Earth will have had enough of us . . . eventually. Maybe they thought that the plants would finally protect themselves. Maybe they knew that the plants could emit a neurotoxin, prompting humans with the urge to kill ourselves, ending our way of life.   Maybe that is what happened to the Mayans. But the Mayans did NOT have Mark Wahlberg to be nicer to the plants. M. Night. Shyamalan likes to dabble in things of world ending proportions. He has a unique style and is usually pretty interesting. Usually. I wasn't a HUGE fan of The Happening.  I still dug it enough, for a solitary watch, but it is one of the slower "end times" movies I've watched. I wouldn't blame the fucking trees at all, if they were trying to kill us off, after what we've done to them. I could accept that fate. But it is winter here and ...

Monkeys and the End: Shawn and Planet of the Apes

16 16 days until the Mayans may have predicted that we would advance ourselves to the point of accidently sending a monkey into our past. Then travelling to the point where the monkeys have "evolved" into the dominant species. Or something like that.  I'm not even sure anymore. Haha. Depending on what you believe, in terms of time travel, the remake was better than the original, at least for me. Still not a Good, but a fun and silly concept. Bad from me. Also, Mark Wahlberg is a far better actor than Charlton Heston, IMO. That  isn't necessary, but it helps. Haha. I also would recommend the newer Rise Of The Planet of the Apes.  That, I gave a Good.  Either way you look at it, the end is neigh. Monkeys? Sixteen days to find out. 16

Shawn Reviews: Ted

Are you a fan of the show Family Guy?  If not, and it offends you, GTFO. This was Seth Macfarlane's first kick, at the cat, on the big screen.  In terms of that, it was a solid "Chuck Norris roundhouse" of a kick.  Well for me anyways. I'm a fan of Family guy. I've always wondered what the hell Seth would do, without the boundaries of prime time T.V. Was not disappointed in the least. This was not Family Guy, either.  This was a story about a teddy bear brought to life, by a fucked up magical wish. Flash fucking Gordon.  Yeah, I said that.  He's in it.  Patrick Stewart as the narrator and even Tiffany (I Think We're Alone Now), was included, in a very disturbing way. The trailers are what scared me. I thought this might be like The Other Guys (starring Wahlberg), where the trailers showed all the funny bits.  Then the rest of the movie sucked. This was not the case here.  The parts they show in the trailers were just parts of ...

The Ted trailer

From the creator of Family Guy, comes a Marky Mark (WAHLBERG) adventure, with his teddy bear!? That's right. Teddy Bear. The film is called: Ted.  It opens in theatres in July. If you like Family Guy humor, then you might like this.  Although this is Rated R.  Seth MacFarlane, unleashed.  I have to say that coming out of trailer watching retirement was worth it for this trailer.  If the movie sucks, at least the trailer was funny as fuck! Trailer for your EYEHOLES.  Rated R.

Micro Review: The Fighter

Another movie checked off my catch-up list, and well worth the wait. This is as much about drug addiction as it is about boxing, and both stories pay off perfectly. Much like its main character, The Fighter is slow to warm up but grows on you. By the end of the movie I was completely engrossed. Mark Wahlberg has never been better and Christian Bale is hands down one of the best actors working today. Be patient with this movie and you won't be disappointed. A Good for sure, and worthy of its praise.

Another reason not to care about a Crow reboot

It's bad enough Hollywood is remaking The Crow, but the fact Focus Features has been sniffing out the wrong stars for lead makes it even worse. First Mark Wahlberg was tapped to play Eric Draven, the murdered rock singer who returns from the grave to avenge his wife's murder. We in The Basement breathed a sigh of relief when Wahlberg dropped out of the project, but now word has it A-Team and Hangover star Bradley Cooper is locked for the role and I feel my stomach acid boil over once again. It's not that Cooper and Wahlberg are bad actors. I don't mind either of them depending on the role. But neither is Crow material. In fact none of the stars who played Draven after the late, great Brandon Lee nailed the part like he did. It takes more than long hair and face paint to make the character work. Lee had a charisma and presence none of the other actors share. And he wasn't a pretty boy like Cooper or Wahlberg. Truth be told, nothing about this project feels righ...

Micro Review: The Other Guys

A fun and funny riff on the buddy cop/action genre made popular in the 1980s, with Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg playing their mismatched partners to the hilt. This is everything Cop Out should have been: clever, exciting, witty and silly without being stupid. The action sequences are brisk and well staged and the humour works more often than it doesn't. I laughed a lot through The Other Guys, which is more than I can say for most mainstream comedies these days. That, and the fact the film is narrated by Ice T and features the sexy Eva Medes, earns this a Good from me. FYI: Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson, who play the hero cops, aren't in this for long. Fans take note.

Wahlberg says no to The Crow

Thank F-ing God! The boys at JoBlo.com and Cinematical report that Mark Wahlberg has decided not to step into Brandon Lee's shoes for a Crow reboot, remake, whatever. And we applaud that. In Wahlberg's own words: "We never committed to making the movie. They talked to me about it and there was a director attached who I was a fan of, and he's no longer doing it. We just thought about it – 'is there something cool to be done there?' But we're not committed to making the movie." The director he mentions is Stephen Norrington, who had this to say about Wahlberg's involvement with the project after he left: "I think Wahlberg could be cool if they take a gritty blue-collar approach. He's a truthful actor. I think he could really ground the supernatural stuff." Shawn and I voiced our displeasure at Wahlberg's potential casting here . Now if they can just deep six the project altogether we would truly be happy.
