Micro Review: The Hurricane Heist

Think Die Hard meets Twister -- only not as good as either -- and you've pretty much nailed The Hurricane Heist. That's right, it's another high-concept action movie from the guy who directed the original The Fast and the Furious and xXx. Make of that what you will. To be honest, I forgot this movie existed until I stumbled across it in my VOD lineup this past weekend. So I watched the trailer on YouTube and decided to give it a go. Seemed like a decent way to kill an evening with a couple of beers in hand.

Behold the Taken 3 . . . I mean Tak3n trailer

Every other movie site on the planet has posted about this, but that's never stopped us before. So we're proud to bring you the official trailer for Tak3n, which I still think is a stupid title for a movie. Just call it Taken 3. Please. That being said, I think the trailer looks damn good. A hell of a lot better than I expected. And the two minutes are certainly more interesting than the entire running time of Taken 2, which was not called Tak2n.

Taken 3 . . . I mean Tak3n opens in January

I don't know how excited I can get for a third Taken movie. The first flick owned big time but the sequel left me pretty cold. The concept doesn't lend itself to a franchise, but that's never stopped filmdom before. Why should it now? Today the international poster for Taken 3 . . . I mean Tak3n . . . debuted on Collider and it looks like a movie poster. There's not much more I can say then that.

Jason revisits Lockout

Back in July of 2012 I reviewed the Guy Pearce/Maggie Grace sci-fi/action flick Lockout and gave it a Bad. You can catch my original review right here . Now, a Bad traditionally means we never sit down and watch the movie again. But I recently bumped into Lockout on Netflix after one too many beers and something . . .  magical happened? Stick with me! A man wrongly convicted of conspiracy to commit espionage against the U.S. is offered his freedom if he can rescue the president's daughter from an outer space prison taken over by violent inmates.

Liam Neeson and Maggie Grace return for Taken 3

I'm gonna toss this into the Enough Already pile, but given the success of Taken 2 ($376 million worldwide) it should come as no surprise that screenwriters Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen have more Taken movies in the cannon. A third flick has been greenlit .

Jason versus Taken 2

Taken was one of the best action movies of the last decade; a tight, taut and slick thriller with rough and tumble violence and an intense performance by Liam Neeson . It made a tank load of bank, so a sequel was inevitable. But how does the follow up rate? Stick with me. In Istanbul , retired CIA operative Bryan Mills and his wife are taken hostage by the father of a kidnapper Mills killed while rescuing his daughter. First off, this is a direct continuation of the first film, not a cheap rehash. So props to screenwriters Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen for that. And it's great to see Neeson 's Brian Mills back in action. He's a good character, a true bad ass, and worthy of his own series of movies. Too bad Taken 2 isn't all that interesting. Sure, there's some nifty fights and a great, and I mean great, car chase through Istanbul, but this sequel doesn't have that much more to offer. Wait, Maggie Grace in a bikini. OK, now there's nothing m...

Girl's Eye View: Taken 2

Allow me to quickly introduce myself: My name is Kara, and I live over at www.karaschatter.com . I have no experience in the movie industry , other than watching and appreciating them. I thought I would offer up my movie reviewing skills, or lack thereof, to The Basement to give readers a female perspective on movies, new, old, good, and bad.  By no means did I intend for the title of this post to rhyme. But it does. Moving on …   When I originally found out that there was going to be a sequel to Liam Neeson ’s Taken , I was pretty excited. After all, the original was pretty epic. (Haven’t seen it? Shame on you!) There’s nothing better than an angry, ex- CIA operative going all out in a quest to find his daughter, who’s been taken by crazy Albanian human traffickers . So, after seeing the chaos and mayhem Neeson’s character caused in the original, the sequel should be just as good or even better, right? WRONG. I watche d Taken 2 just a couple days after i...

Exclusive YouTube Taken 2 trailer best yet

Before Chuck Norris goes to sleep he checks under his bed for Liam Neeson. I've bitched before about how 20th Century Fox has buggered the marketing for its sequel to the smash hit Taken. But, with this new trailer released exclusively to YouTube, they got it right -- in my biased opinion of course. I'm not going to spoil it for you, just watch and enjoy. And remember: in Istanbul, retired CIA operative Bryan Mills and his wife are taken hostage by the father of a kidnapper Mills killed while rescuing his daughter. Much kicking of ass ensues. Taken 2 opens Oct. 5.

Liam Neeson kills everyone in this domestic Taken 2 trailer

Little more than a month ago we showed you the international trailer for the sequel to Taken, a film everyone on the planet but Matt Bellamy liked. Now we've got the North American trailer for Taken 2, and it's not much different. Sure, there's more action over classical music and a hint that Maggie Grace plays a bigger role than the victim this time around. What it doesn't show is Neeson gets taken too, and has to fight for his life while Grace comes to his aid. I really hope this is good. The trailer is decent, but doesn't totally sell me. I know I will see it, but 20th Century Fox really needs to sell this movie in light of the negative impact the tragedy in Aurora has had on the movie-theatre experience. Taken 2 opens Oct. 5

Jason reviews Lockout

The Basement has been a champion of Luc Besson's low-budget sci-fi/action flick Lockout simply based on the premise of Guy Pearce rescuing Maggie Grace from a prison in space. I mean, come on! How fucking cool is that!?! Just in case it's not clear: a man wrongly convicted of conspiracy to commit espionage against the U.S. (Pearce) is offered his freedom if he can rescue the president's daughter (Grace) from an outer space prison taken over by violent inmates. That's a premise with B-movie written all over it. And Lockout is indeed a B-movie. No more, no less. The visual effects range from decent (a final assault on the prison by spacecraft) to God fucking awful (a CGI car chase on par with a late 90s video games). Much of the action is of the running and shooting variety, save for a very cool zero-gravity brawl. In fact, it's the action and effects in Lockout that let me down the most. I don't need originality every step of the way, but give me someth...

The wait is over: the Taken 2 trailer is here!

Can I get a fuck yeah!?! Good! Nicely done. After months of speculation, scant photos and a few plot details here and there, we finally have a look at the sequel to a movie everyone but Matt Bellamy liked -- Taken. And Taken 2 looks bad ass!! The plot? In Istanbul, retired CIA operative Bryan Mills and his wife are taken hostage by the father of a kidnapper Mills killed while rescuing his daughter. The result? Neeson beating the living hell out of everyone who pisses him off. That's all I need! But enough of me blathering on, watch this mother and enjoy! Taken 2 opens Oct. 5.

A look at Kevin Williamson's The Following

Which, upon first glance, looks like just another serial-killer-on-the-loose movie, only with high-class talent like Kevin Bacon, James Purefoy and Maggie Grace. Surprise, surprise . . . it's a TV series! Scheduled to premiere next season on Fox, this dark drama centres on a diabolical serial killer (Purefoy) who uses technology to create a cult of serial killers, and the FBI agent (Bacon) who finds himself in the middle of it. Grace plays one of Purefoy's would-be victims. If this were a movie, I'd say been there, done that. As a TV series, I'm intrigued. I don't know how much mileage they can get out of the idea, but I'd been willing to tune in for a few weeks and give it a chance. And Williamson, who wrote three of the four Scream films and I Know What You Did Last Summer, certainly knows the material. No word yet on exactly when the show will premiere, but we'll keep you posted. Give the preview a peep and sound off if you please.

Catch five minutes of Lockout

The more I see of the Guy Pearce/Maggie Grace action flick, the better it looks. And nothing gives a geek a real feel for a movie than five minutes of footage. OK, four minutes and 51 seconds. Sue me! I double dog dare you! This footage certainly lives up to the Die Hard-in-space potential of the premise, which sees Pearce break into an orbital prison to rescue Grace. Because who wouldn't do that for her? I like what I see here, a lot. We get a zero-gravity punch up for starters. And smartass remarks. Knowing this was written and produced by action guru Luc Besson helps, 'cause all I'm in the mood to see here is a big, noisy, cheesy action film. Hopefully that's what Lockout brings when it opens April 20.

Lockout poster features a babe and a big gun

A movie that's gone from zero to 60 on The Basement's must-see scale is the sci-fi/action film Lockout. First, we got a look at the kick ass trailer (posted below) and now we've go the slick poster (posted above). It shows Guy Pearce in full action-hero mode with a big effing gun, hottie Maggie Grace and a bunch of explosions and shit. It's everything a poster for a flick like Lockout should be. Oh yeah, the title's in there somewhere too. Lockout is written and produced by action guru Luc Besson and stars Pearce as a wise-cracking anti-hero recruited to rescue Grace from an orbital prison. The film hits April 20 and look like all kinds of fun.

A first look at Taken 2

No, this isn't a trailer for the much anticipated sequel to Liam Neeson's spectacular 2009 action flick Taken, but rather a rundown of the script by those fine folks over at Latino Review. And it's a rather spoiler free one at that. It does, however, offer a very thorough synopsis of the sequel's first act or so and hints at how the film plays out without actually running anything. The reviewer also puts to rest any fears that Neeson will play a small part in this. That said, if you want to go into the film without even the remotest hint of what's to come, then don't push play. But, if you want to be even more jazzed for what promises to be an exercise in pure badassery, then give the six-minute clip a listen. Maggie Grace and Famke Janssen return along with Neeson. Taken 2 is shooting as we speak and hits theatres Oct. 5. And apologies for the sizing of the video, but it's meant to be heard rather than seen.

Lock-Out trailer will kick your ass!

Another day, another trailer for a Guy Pearce movie? And he's playing a wisecracking sci-fi action hero? Hey, stranger things have happened! And truth is stranger than fiction 'cause Pearce plays just that in the Luc Besson scripted Lock-Out, which we've got the trailer for below. Pearce plays a convict who is offered his freedom if he saves the U.S. president's daughter from an orbital penal colony. Shades of Escape From New York/L.A.? Sure. Do we care? No. Why? Because Lock-Out looks great. And Maggie Grace stars as the president's daughter. I've always dug Pearce. He's a good actor and capable of playing anything. Here he gets to cut loose and kick some ass. The movie looks like it does the same. Bring it! But why try and explain when you can watch? Push play, sound off and check out Lock-Out when it lands in theatres April 20. More Lockout Videos

Maggie Grace back for Taken 2

We reported a couple of weeks back that Liam Neeson will return in the still untitled Taken 2. Now word has surfaced via a number of movie news websites that Maggie Grace will also be back as Neeson's daughter. The follow up to the 2009 box office hit is once again penned by co-producer Luc Besson. No word yet on what it's about but one can hope it isn't just a rehash involving Neeson saving Grace from bad guys. Although one would complain less if the level of ass kicking, which was already awesome, is pumped up even more for the sequel. Transporter 3 director Olivier Megaton will direct, with production set to start in late 2011/early 2012. And I'm excited, as we here in The Basement loved the first film. Don't screw it up guys!
