Into the MCU: "Iron Man 3" (2013)

Everyone thought " The Avengers " would be the culmination and final act of the Marvel Cinematic Universe- when in fact it was just the beginning... Tony Stark is suffering from suffering Post Traumatic Stress from the "Battle of New York".  To combat this, he builds an army of Iron Man suits- only to find that it only served as a distraction from his issues.  After Happy is injured in an attack by the forces of a person calling himself "The Manchurian", Tony soon finds himself in a battle with his own identity... and monsters from his past... I love how they incorporated alien invasion from " The Avengers " into the storyline.  It helped to solidify continuity, and brought depth to the characters.  While Killian was a fairly week character in terms of motivation (he was just another piece of Tony's past coming back to bite him- just like Mickey Rourke's character in " Iron Man 2 "), I found that by giving Tony an inner s...

Vin Diesel goes comic-book hero in Bloodshot

The Fast and Furious movies aside, it's been a long time since I've been excited for a Vin Diesel flick. The last Riddick movie back in 2013, to be exact. That's six long years... But his latest non-vehicular offering looks pretty damn slick, and will certainly deliver on the larger-than-life thrills we've come to expect from the star. Bloodshot is based on a best-selling comic, and features Diesel as an unstoppable killing machine who discovers he's being manipulated by the very agency that created him. Sure, we've seen this kind of thing before, but the trailer below promises some cool action. Observe: Diesel's co-stars include Guy Pearce, Eiza Gonzalez and Toby Kebbell. I'm down for this when it hits theatres Feb. 21, 2020.  How about you? Is this one you're going to line up for? Source: Sony

The Basement is back . . . for realz

"You never say never, but I don't think I'd want to do a long running series. " -- Guy Pearce Amen, Mr. Pearce. Although it looks like We Can from the Basement will be a long running series after all. Yeah, we did six seasons of quality podcasts and then called it quits last Halloween, only to return briefly earlier this year with a new podcast and the promise of more to come. And they never did . . . until now! Well, soon.

Jason revisits Lockout

Back in July of 2012 I reviewed the Guy Pearce/Maggie Grace sci-fi/action flick Lockout and gave it a Bad. You can catch my original review right here . Now, a Bad traditionally means we never sit down and watch the movie again. But I recently bumped into Lockout on Netflix after one too many beers and something . . .  magical happened? Stick with me! A man wrongly convicted of conspiracy to commit espionage against the U.S. is offered his freedom if he can rescue the president's daughter from an outer space prison taken over by violent inmates.

Jason reviews Lockout

The Basement has been a champion of Luc Besson's low-budget sci-fi/action flick Lockout simply based on the premise of Guy Pearce rescuing Maggie Grace from a prison in space. I mean, come on! How fucking cool is that!?! Just in case it's not clear: a man wrongly convicted of conspiracy to commit espionage against the U.S. (Pearce) is offered his freedom if he can rescue the president's daughter (Grace) from an outer space prison taken over by violent inmates. That's a premise with B-movie written all over it. And Lockout is indeed a B-movie. No more, no less. The visual effects range from decent (a final assault on the prison by spacecraft) to God fucking awful (a CGI car chase on par with a late 90s video games). Much of the action is of the running and shooting variety, save for a very cool zero-gravity brawl. In fact, it's the action and effects in Lockout that let me down the most. I don't need originality every step of the way, but give me someth...

Catch five minutes of Lockout

The more I see of the Guy Pearce/Maggie Grace action flick, the better it looks. And nothing gives a geek a real feel for a movie than five minutes of footage. OK, four minutes and 51 seconds. Sue me! I double dog dare you! This footage certainly lives up to the Die Hard-in-space potential of the premise, which sees Pearce break into an orbital prison to rescue Grace. Because who wouldn't do that for her? I like what I see here, a lot. We get a zero-gravity punch up for starters. And smartass remarks. Knowing this was written and produced by action guru Luc Besson helps, 'cause all I'm in the mood to see here is a big, noisy, cheesy action film. Hopefully that's what Lockout brings when it opens April 20.

Lockout poster features a babe and a big gun

A movie that's gone from zero to 60 on The Basement's must-see scale is the sci-fi/action film Lockout. First, we got a look at the kick ass trailer (posted below) and now we've go the slick poster (posted above). It shows Guy Pearce in full action-hero mode with a big effing gun, hottie Maggie Grace and a bunch of explosions and shit. It's everything a poster for a flick like Lockout should be. Oh yeah, the title's in there somewhere too. Lockout is written and produced by action guru Luc Besson and stars Pearce as a wise-cracking anti-hero recruited to rescue Grace from an orbital prison. The film hits April 20 and look like all kinds of fun.

Lock-Out trailer will kick your ass!

Another day, another trailer for a Guy Pearce movie? And he's playing a wisecracking sci-fi action hero? Hey, stranger things have happened! And truth is stranger than fiction 'cause Pearce plays just that in the Luc Besson scripted Lock-Out, which we've got the trailer for below. Pearce plays a convict who is offered his freedom if he saves the U.S. president's daughter from an orbital penal colony. Shades of Escape From New York/L.A.? Sure. Do we care? No. Why? Because Lock-Out looks great. And Maggie Grace stars as the president's daughter. I've always dug Pearce. He's a good actor and capable of playing anything. Here he gets to cut loose and kick some ass. The movie looks like it does the same. Bring it! But why try and explain when you can watch? Push play, sound off and check out Lock-Out when it lands in theatres April 20. More Lockout Videos

Revenge backfires in Seeking Justice

We're by no means huge Nicolas Cage fans here in The Basement. I dig his 1990s action flicks and a handful of his other films. Shawn resents him for being cast as Superman at one point in his career. But neither of us can deny that Anchor Bay releases some damn fine genre films. So we're probably going to give Cage's latest movie, Seeking Justice, a view whence it comes out. Why? Well, for one, his co-stars are Guy Pearce, who is no acting slouch, and hottie January Jones. As for the plot? Read on: Cage stars as Will Gerard, a man whose wife is violently assaulted by a criminal. Stricken with anger, Gerard is approached by Simon, who claims to represent a group of  concerned citizens who enact vigilante justice against unpunished offenders roaming the city. Gerard accepts Simon’s offer of vengeance, but the price is high: Simon wants a dirty deed in exchange for a dirty deed. Sure, the movie was made more than three years ago -- never a good sign -- but the previe...

Trailer Alert: Don't Be Afraid of the Dark

We here in The Basement love our horror. And one of the name's horror geeks have bowed at the alter of recent years is Guillermo del Toro. The man's got a good resume under his belt, be it as a director (Blade 2) or as a producer (The Orphanage). So when his name turned up on this trailer for the remake of the 1973 TV movie Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, I had to give it a look. The film promises to be creepy and, given the R rating, bloody. Throw in some pint-sized creatures and a big, spooky house and I'm there. Oh, and Katie Holmes is still cute. The film is due out in January. If the main trailer looks good, I could venture to a theatre to see this. What say you? Don't Be Afraid of the Dark in HD Trailer Park Movies | MySpace Video
