Zack Snyder's Justice League and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

In a world where opinions are facts, and friendships can be lost when differing points of view collide, what happens when two lifelong brothers disagree? Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead swarms Netflix in May

Zack Snyder exploded onto the movie scene with 2004's Dawn of the Dead and, in my mind, pulled off one of the best zombie movies -- and remakes -- in recent memory. His sense of style and visual storytelling was well suited for Dawn, and I've eagerly awaited his return to the genre with Army of the Dead. The wait is almost over, as Army hits Netflix on May 21, which essentially makes the flick the kickoff to whatever this summer movie season will be. And today we got a first look at the film via the teaser above. Suffice to say, I like what I see, and want to see more!  Army of the Dead stars Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, and Theo Rossi. And yes, it's heading straight to Netflix, continuing the streamers conquest over cinemas, which we in The Basement are A-OK with! Source: JoBlo Horror Videos

Lex Luthor and Alfred cast in Batman vs. Superman

And they're not the first choices you'd think of either, at least for Lex Luthor . Veteran bad guys Mark Strong and Brian Cranston were rumoured to play Luthor, but Warner Bros. and director Zack Snyder have decided to go with Zombieland/The Social Network star Jesse Eisenberg as Superman's arch nemesis.

Jason versus Man of Steel

Normally I start spewing thoughts on a movie onto this site before the credits stop rolling, but I waited with Man of Steel . Not because I didn't dig the shit out of it -- I did -- but the flick got out after midnight and I'm old, so I went home and got some sleep. You know how it goes ;) Everyone knows the story of Superman, so there's no point regurgitating it here. This take, although true to the character's origin, makes a few changes as to how it plays out, especially if you, like Shawn and I, are most familiar with the Richard Donner version. Director Zack Snyder and producer/co-writer Christopher Nolan took the classic character and, much as Nolan did with Batman, made him grittier and easier to relate to. He's still a beacon of hope for the human race, but I didn't cringe writing that (I usually find beacon-of-hope stuff gay). Instead, I dug Superman's story and found much truth in it. This is a Superman I can relate too and root for. I...

Final Man of Steel trailer is epic

We take a brief break from our usual B-grade, creepy entertainment to share something epic. That's right, the final Man of Steel trailer before the film opens next Friday , June 14. Shawn's the big Superman nerd. I'm the Batman guy. The fact Christopher Nolan made the brilliant Dark Knight trilogy and has produced director Zack Snyder 's take on the DC Comics hero is probably why Man of Steel looks as awesome as it does. As for the Nokia angle? Pure capitalist greed. Man of Steel stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Russell Crow, Kevin Costner and Michael Shannon. This is one that's definitely worth venturing out of The Basement for. Will "Batman" actor "bale" on a "Justice League" movie?

One thing that entertainment news shows and websites have in common is that they report on rumours floating around the ether in regards to upcoming movie projects and the names that might possibly be attached to them. This article continues in that proud tradition of saying, "Here's some juicy movie gossip". In the wake of the extremely popular " Avengers " movie- and even before it, there has been rumours of Warner Bros. and DC Comics putting out a " Justice League " movie.  The current round of rumours surrounding this project are pretty much as follows: 1.  Warner Bros is courting Christopher Nolan of the recent " Dark Knight " trilogy to be involved with pretty much EVERY superhero project at the studio.  Nolan is also responsible for bringing Superman to audiences with " Man of Steel ".  This rumour has been enhanced by the fact that a re-write of the " Justice League " script was ordered a few months ago;...

For posterity sake, the Man of Steel trailer

We've had this up on our Facebook pages all day, but justice wouldn't be served if we didn't post the trailer for Zack Snyder and Christopher Nolan's glorious looking retelling of the Superman story here on the site. I was a hater, but this preview actually brought a tear to my eye (wanna fight about it!). This, like Nolan's Batman films, is a serious and realistic version of Superman. One about a flawed being and our flawed species, yet with a message of hope that only a Man of Steel can bring. I can't fucking wait for June 14. Thanks to Warner Bros. pictures for the preview.

Superman in chains! A poster for Man of Steel

If an image can erase any doubt that director Zack Snyder and producer Christopher Nolan are doing something completely different with Superman it's the poster below. I mean, just look at it! Now what do you think? I like it. Although purests might take issue with what is turning out to be a very un-Christopher Reeve spin on the character, I'm up for something different and gritty. Ditto him being viewed by us puny humans as an alien instead of a saviour. Anything that makes the character interesting again is OK by me. Man of Steel opens June 14, 2013. We tip our hats to JoBlo.com for digging up the poster.

Our first look at the Man of Steel

This is a teaser trailer in every sense of the word, but it's also a highly effective one if I do say so myself. I know Shawn -- our resident Superman fan -- will be the true voice of reason on how Zack Snyder's retelling of the legendary hero stacks up in a fan's mind. From the perspective of someone who is indifferent, this is a very down-to-earth take on the story and has the stamp of producer Christopher (The Dark Knight trilogy) Nolan all over it. It's gritty and realistic, but still captures the gravitas of what Superman is all about. We've still got a long wait ahead of us as Man of Steel doesn't open until next summer, but this should wet the appetite of Superman fans. Let us know what you think below. Man of Steel stars Henry Cavill as Superman/Clark Kent, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, and Kevin Costner as Pa Kent. Oh yeah, some guy named Russell Crowe is Jor-El.

Look up in the sky . . . it's the Man of Steel logo

Sorry, it was just too easy. But what other way is there to introduce the official logo for Warner Bros. upcoming Superman flick Man of Steel? And it's nice to see that director Zack Snyder and company are pretty much going the traditional route for the latest telling of the Son of Krypton. The logo is a little darker, a little more gritty, but there's no way to mistake that this is a Superman movie. We've balked at the project in the past because, really, does the world need another Superman origin story? No. But Shawn -- the world's biggest Superman fan -- likes what he sees so far in terms of Henry Cavill's physical interpretation of the character. And praise Jebus Lex Luthor isn't the main villain. Amy Adams and Russel Crowe co-star in the film, which is still in production. Man of Steel is slotted to hit theatres in June 2013.

And the villain in the new Superman movie is . . .

Zod! Not Lex Luthor, as almost everyone on the planet suspected, but Zod. As in "kneel before Zod!" The villain was originally portrayed by the great character actor Terance Stamp in Superman and Superman 2, which is my personal favourite of the original films. This time around Zod will be played by Michael Shannon, who is best known for his roles in TV's Boardwalk Empire and the feature films The Runaways and Revolutionary Road. While not a geek favourite, Shannon is well regarded as an actor, which shows Warner Bros. and director Zack Snyder are going with a super actor instead of a super star for the villain. I'd say that's a smart move. Shawn and I are less than thrilled with the latest revamp of Superman, even if they go with Zod as the bad guy. Why not continue with the universe Bryan Singer forged in Superman Returns? Or improve on the work already established in Smallville? But we don't run Hollywood. Oh, and for the record, the upcoming film i...

And Superman's love interest will be . . .

. . .  Lois Lane. Duh! But who is the actress playing the feisty female reporter who lusts after The Man of Steel while being chummy with Clark Kent, not realizing the two are the same dude? Director Zack Snyder, who underwhelmed us with Sucker Punch last weekend, has selected Academy Award nominee Amy Adams for the role. At least he's going for talent along with sex appeal. Adams will star opposite Henry Cavill as Superman/Kent.  Shawn and I aren't keen on yet another Superman origin story heading to the big screen. I mean, come on, who doesn't know how Superman became Superman? However, with Kevin Costner and Diane Lane cast as Ma and Pa Kent and now Adams added to the mix we'll at least have a decent cast to look forward to. The new Superman is expected to arrive in theatres some time in 2012.

Micro Review: Sucker Punch

Writer/director Zack Snyder's Sucker Punch is a beautiful mess; a soulless feast for the eyes and ears with little to offer the brain. Snyder spends a lot of time and energy crafting dazzling fantasy sequences that go nowhere. They move the story forward but offer nothing more than glorious nerd porn. As for the story itself? Who cares. There's nothing there to hold one's attention. This is an OK watch once, which makes it a Bad in my books.

Former Robin Hood could have role in new Superman

That's right, Kevin Costner, the Oscar winner who once thrilled audiences as Robin Hood and wooed Whitney Houston in The Bodyguard, is apparently being considered for a role in the new Superman movie. But who? Could he be shaved bald and cast as Superman's arch rival Lex Luthor? Let's hope not. Not because Costner wouldn't be a good Luthor. I actually think the guy is a decent actor. But everyone who is tired of seeing Superman fight the same villain in every movie raise his or her hand. All of you? Good! The only promising thing about latest take on the Man of Steel is director Zack Snyder.Otherwise it's hard to care about yet another origin story for a character everyone on planet earth is familiar with. But back to Costner. Who do you think he should play? Established character or new creation? The film is due out in December 2012.

Henry Cavill is Superman. Henry who!?!

The Internet has been surprisingly quiet today about the news that British actor Henry Cavill, 27, has been cast in Zack Snyder's take on Superman. But get this, Cavill was actually in the running for the role of Clark Kent/Superman in 2005's Superman Returns before Brandon Routh got the part. And where is Routh now? Nowhere. That's where. Meanwhile, Cavill went on to appear in The Tudors and the movie Hellraiser: Hellworld. Take that, Routh . In a statement, Snyder, who directed Watchmen, 300 and the upcoming Sucker Punch, said “In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time, and I am honoured to be a part of his return to the big screen.” He added that Cavill is “the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield.” Who am I to argue? I have nothing invested in Superman as a character. Shawn's the huge Superman nut, so it will be interesting to hear what he thinks. I'm more curious about who they cast as Lois...

Get your mind blown with this new Sucker Punch trailer!

Some days it's tough to find interesting things to share with our fellow Basement Dwellers. On days like this, it's not. Below is the second preview for Zack Snyder's Sucker Punch, and it threatens to melt minds and eyeballs with rampant coolness. Not only is it even more fantastic to look at than the previous trailer, but it shares some of the story too. Yes, there is a story, which is as follows: a young girl is institutionalized by her wicked stepfather. Retreating to an alternative reality as a coping strategy, she envisions a plan which will help her escape from the facility. Sounds very Cinderella, only with ninjas, dragons, robots and hot babes kicking all kinds of ass. Not unlike a certain Jason Statham we talked about yesterday. Consider us sold. Sucker Punch stars Emily Browning, Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone, and Vanessa Hudgens. Currently in post production, the film is set to land in theaters in March 2011. Until then, feast on the awesomeness below! ...

Trailer Alert: Sucker Punch

Here's the Comic Con footage from Zack Snyder's upcoming fantasy epic Sucker Punch, and boy does it leave one wanting to see more! Snyder, who directed the awesome Dawn of the Dead remake, the spectacular 300 and the flawed but entertaining Watchmen, is a superior visual storyteller who also knows how to hit the right character notes. While we don't get much about the plot from this footage, the images are jaw dropping. I'm already looking forward to seeing the film next year. I mean babes, swords, dragons and giant robots armed with gatling guns? Who doesn't want to watch a film with all that? Sucker Punch hits theatres in March 2011.
