Vin Diesel's Bloodshot comes home March 24

Following in the footsteps of Universal Studios, Sony Pictures announced they will release Vin Diesel's comic-book inspired action flick Bloodshot to VOD next Tuesday... less than two weeks after it hit theatres! Universal already opted to bring The Invisible Man and The Hunt (which hit theatres within the last few weeks) home this Friday, and said the planned theatrical release of Trolls World Tour is off, and the movie comes home tomorrow. Movie theatres are closed around the world due to COVID-19, prompting studios to postpone some releases indefinitely, and bring others to the home market in unprecedented time. Bloodshot's digital purchase will go for $19.99. This is a bit different than what Universal offers, which is $19.99 for a 48-hour rental. Either way, the movie-distribution game just changed. Clearly, there is no need for a window between theatrical and digital release. I say unleash all movies at home and in theatres at the same time, and let audiences ch...

Ring in the new year with Echoes of Fear

It's no secret Echoes of Fear is a recent Basement favourite. We shared much love for the movie here and here , and enjoyed the hell out of our conversation with its lovely star, the talented Trista Robinson. The film has already come home on a variety of platforms, but we've learned Brian and Laurence Avenent-Bradley's spooky thriller hits Digital on New Year's Day via Artist Rights Distribution. Big congrats to the writer/directors, and Trista's co-stars Hannah Race, Paul Chirico and Marshal Hilton. If you haven't caught Echoes of Fear yet, you won't have any excuses come Jan. 1, 2020. This is easily one of the best, and scariest, indie-horror movies to come along in quite some time. In the meantime, check out the trailer: Source: Echoes of Fear

That's right, one of our favourites of the year hits VOD today on a plethora of platforms that will placate your horror needs. Debunkers, Inc in The Basement

Debunkers, Inc is a fun little film I didn't expect to enjoy, but really did . Its success rests solely on the capable cast, who take a quirky concept, and off-beat humour, and run with it. Today, I got to chat with two of the film's stars, Nicole DeBois and Blake Kevin Dwyer, who play Sheik and Doc respectfully. That's the two of them on the right. They're a talented and witty duo. This was Nicole and Blake's first feature film, and it's been landing some pretty solid word of mouth. We discuss what it's like to star in a low-budget movie, how Debunkers, Inc came together, and what it was like building such a fine chemistry amongst the cast. Nicole, Blake and I had a lot of fun, and I'm sure it'll shine through during our feature interview, which you get to hear on the Sept. 20 edition of From The Basement. Debunkers, Inc is available on DVD and On Demand. Stick with us!

Bad CGI Sharks comes home in January

We're big fans of the shaksploitation comedy Bad CGI Sharks here in The Basement. We loved the hell out of the movie, and are lining up an interview with the talented hombres behind it some time in the next few weeks. Now we've learned everyone will get to see this fun -- and funny -- film early next year, as Bad CGI Sharks hits DVD and VOD Jan. 21, 2020. That's very good news indeed! To celebrate, we provide you with a new trailer for the movie, and offer it up for your approval right here: Bad CGI Sharks is directed by, and stars, Matteo Molinari and Matt and Jason Ellsworth, and we encourage you all to see it when you get the chance! Chucky who? Uncork'd Entertainment unleashes Dolls in July

Let's be honest here; dolls are creepy as fuck! That's why the Child's Play and Puppet Master films have been so endearing, and I'm pretty sure that's what director Cuyle Carvin and Uncork'd Entertainment intend to capitalize on with their upcoming feature, Dolls.

Festival fave Piercing comes home in March

Hot off its debut at the Sundance Film Festival, Universal Pictures announces its bringing Nicholas Pesce's horror flick Piercing home next month. The film, which stars Christopher Abbott and Mia Wasikowska, has received high acclaim amongst us Interweb journalists and horror fans, so I'm figuring this is one to check out.

New Blood Bound clip makes a dark promise

Did you know that Thanos has a daughter, and she stars in movies? A new horror flick called Blood Bound to be exact. Well, Josh Brolin has a daughter, and she's one of the leads in Blood Bound, which is described as Rosemary's Baby meets Drag Me to Hell. That conjures up quite an image when you stop to think about it.

Editorial: studios look to close theatre-to-digital gap

The times they are a changing, as Warner Bros and Universal Studios look to shorten the length of time a film plays in theatres, in favour of a quicker jump to digital and the home market.  When I was a wee lad, it wasn't unusual for a movie to stick around our local cinema for weeks, even months. I remember Raiders of the Lost Ark playing in town for 30 to 40 weeks - that's seven or eight months! The last movie I remember getting such a long theatrical run was Titanic, which played for almost a year.

John Fallon's The Shelter hits Vimeo On Demand

Long-time fans know Shawn and I have a strong connection with filmmaker John Fallon and his directorial debut The Shelter. Which means we're super pumped to report the critically acclaimed film, which the L.A. Times called "remarkably ambitious," is now available to watch anywhere in the world on Vimeo On Demand!

Prepare for the final game with Ouija Seance

The dead are once again ready to rise this July, as High Octane Pictures unleashes its latest horror entry with Ouija Seance: The Final Game. Yup, last night we pimped weepy dramas, tonight low-budget horror. Life is grand here in The Basement.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Boundaries

The first Extended Cut episode is here! Featuring Jason and Shawn's NL Morning Show stint with Howie Reimer PLUS a whole lotta other movie talk, and even some movie news, for your ear holes! Jason and Shawn yap about Incredibles 2, and Shawn puts the recent VOD release Rampage -- starring The Rock and a giant monkey -- on the chopping block. Oh, and Jason brings a Retro Review in for examination.

Tracey Birdsall and Rogue Warrior come home

There are few cooler things for Shawn, Amy and I than seeing something we've endorsed, or someone we've interviewed, succeed. That was the case with Matt Sconce and his flick Altar, and it turns out that's also the story with Tracey Birdsall and her flick Rogue Warrior: Robot Fighter. Not that Tracey, who like the movie's director, Neil Johnson, hasn't been in the business for years. But we learned today that their movie Rogue Warrior: Robot Fighter -- which we discussed with them on the show last season -- has had a successful theatrical run and is heading home via VOD.

What Hollywood can learn from The Relic

Although it didn't light up the box office during it's initial run, The Relic has, for me at least, stood the test of time, and been a flick I can watch again and again. I recall catching it twice on opening weekend in 1997,  then at least a couple of times on VHS (remember those?). Then it fell off my radar for a while. A long while, actually, because I didn't revisit The Relic until a couple of years ago, when I rented it on VOD.

Former Power Rangers on board for Blood Punch

What's this? A trio of former kids' TV show stars headline a drug-fuelled, supernatural noir? OK. You've got my interest. Milo Cawthorne, Olivia Tennet and Ari Boyland -- formerly of Power Rangers RPM -- do indeed star in Midnight Releasing's Blood Punch, a bloody thriller about a murderous love triangle. The flick has been a festival favourite since it premiered at the Austin Film Festival.

Some new See No Evil 2 images

Under normal circumstances I wouldn't have a lick of interest in See No Evil 2, the sequel to a movie I barely remember watching. I know it was a generic slasher movie featuring a wrestler, but that's about it. However, the sequel is directed by Jen and Sylvia Soska, our favourite Twisted Twins, which makes it required viewing.

Interview: Sledge director Kristian Hanson

Sledge is a horror/comedy that's getting a lot of good buzz on the indie circuit. It's a spoof where the psychopathic killer not only believes he's living a movie or video game, but that he's the star of the story. The flick hit  VOD earlier this month and lands on DVD Oct. 7. The Basement took a few minutes to engage writer/director Kristian Hanson in a Q&A about the movie and how it came to be.

Zombieland TV series headed for Amazon.com

That's right peeps, we might not be getting a sequel to the rather brilliant Zombieland , we're going to get a TV series instead. But it won't be a network series, oh no. This mother is going the On Demand route. Seems Amazon .com is trying to compete with Eli Roth 's Netflix original series Hemlock Grove by jump starting the Zombieland project. No word yet on who's in it or when we'll see it, but each 30-minute episode will follow the adventures of a group of survivors who band together during the zombie apocalypse. Unless you've been living under a rock, the Zombieland movie starred Woody Harrelson , Jessie Eisenberg, Abigail Breslin and the lovely Emma Stone , all of whom are pictured above. The verdict is still out on whether Netflix or Amazon can sustain a series like this, but I say go for it. VOD is the wave of the future, and I'd love to see these sites produce good, original content until the cows come home. Source: iO9 Related...

Hitchcockian thriller Penumbra hits DVD next month

We could post about Peter Jackson announcing that his adaptation of The Hobbit has jumped from two films to a trilogy, but we'd rather tell Basement Dwellers that the Argentinian thriller Penumbra will be unleashed on DVD and VOD Aug. 28 by way of IFC Midnight. Why, you ask? By now every movie geek on the planet has heard The Hobbit news. It's not that we don't care, we do, but Shawn and I try to bring Basement Dwellers movie news from The Basement. You know, genre stuff that relates to horror, action, sci-fi and comedy. But we posted the trailer for Man of Steel you say? Well, Shawn's a Superman fan. And reviewed The Dark Knight Rises? Sue us. OK, OK, we just wanted to post a pic of hot damsel in distress instead. Again, sue us. And we've heard good things about Penumbra, which features Cristina Brondo as a woman who hesitantly rents an apartment to an eerie man and soon realizes she has a part in the solar eclipse that is taking place. Cryptic yes, but...

The Loved Ones come home in September

Shawn and I put the Australian torture porn flick The Loved Ones on the chopping block back in Season Two and loved the shit out of it. Loved! It! Now the rest of you will have the chance to catch this little-seen gem. Paramount Home Media Distribution will release Sean Byrne's twisted little tale of high-school love gone horribly wrong on DVD and VOD on Sept. 11. The DVD includes the unrated version of the film plus interviews with the film's stars and makeup supervisor. This is a must see and, I admit, a must own. Don't believe me? Read on for our thoughts on the film! Jason: Wow, what an experience. I've never gone from hating a movie to loving it before. But I did here. Believe it! The first 40 minutes or so are disjointed and weird. Then the film has a brilliant turning point and it all comes together in the best possible way. Robin McLeavy is a revelation as Lola, one of the creepiest movie villains of all time. Her family makes the one from The Texas ...
