Hitchcockian thriller Penumbra hits DVD next month

We could post about Peter Jackson announcing that his adaptation of The Hobbit has jumped from two films to a trilogy, but we'd rather tell Basement Dwellers that the Argentinian thriller Penumbra will be unleashed on DVD and VOD Aug. 28 by way of IFC Midnight.

Why, you ask? By now every movie geek on the planet has heard The Hobbit news. It's not that we don't care, we do, but Shawn and I try to bring Basement Dwellers movie news from The Basement. You know, genre stuff that relates to horror, action, sci-fi and comedy.

But we posted the trailer for Man of Steel you say? Well, Shawn's a Superman fan. And reviewed The Dark Knight Rises? Sue us.

OK, OK, we just wanted to post a pic of hot damsel in distress instead. Again, sue us.

And we've heard good things about Penumbra, which features Cristina Brondo as a woman who hesitantly rents an apartment to an eerie man and soon realizes she has a part in the solar eclipse that is taking place.

Cryptic yes, but critics say the film harkens back to horror films of the 60s and 70s from directors like Alfred Hitchcock and Roman Polanski. This works for us, and we'll give Penumbra a viewing when it's unleashed in four weeks.

Until then, here's the trailer.
