Top Five Pulp Magazine Heroes

Our modern comics evolved from something that came before- the pulp magazines and pulp novels of the 1920's and 1930's.  Since I enjoy exploring the roots of modern things (entertainment or otherwise), I figured I'd give you a list of my Top Five Pulp Magazine Heroes! Doc Savage-  The Man of Bronze himself.  An adventurer who's trained his body and mind to be the pinnacle of human perfection (not to mention the perfect tan and widow's peak).  With his trusty crew of geniuses and fighters, he traveled the world chasing international criminals and solving global conspiracies. Six-Gun Gorilla-  A gorilla named O'Neill raised by a prospector who taught him the ways of Humanity- including being able to use a six-shooter.  Upon the prospector's murder by an outlaw gang, O'Neill donned his revolver, and set out on a bullet riddled rampage of revenge against the killers. The Avenger-  Richard Benson was a wealthy adventurer who's family dis...

Top Five Soundtrack Songs

Music is an important part of a movie.  It enhances the mood and emotional impact of a scene- makes it scary, dramatic, exciting, funny, etc. So, what follows are my Top Five Soundtrack Songs: "Haunted Heart" (Christina Aguilera):  This song is from the start of the latest animated "Addams Family" movie.  It is a nice, haunting, beautiful song- a song fitting for introducing Mortica Addams. "The Touch" (Stan Bush):  This is considered one of the best songs to appear in an animated film.  That film being "Transformers" from (1986).  Just a really energetic, rocking song. "Hooked on a Feeling" (Blue Swede):  The Guardians of the Galaxy is known for it's classic songs- for me one of the more iconic ones from that movie is "Hooked on a Feeling".  A nice, bouncy, relaxed song that you can bop around to like Starlord on an alien planet looking for an Infinity Stone... "Hunger City" (Cherry Bom...

Top Five Movies With Strong Female Lead Characters

So. 2019's "Charlie's Angels" bombed. And a stereotype that men don't see movies with strong female leads is "born." It's a thing, eh? I was originally going to do a standard, "Having My Say" format... but it's been said by pretty much everyone else already: "Males will see a movie with a strong female lead IF the movie looks well made." Which I agree with.  I quite enjoy books, movies, and TV shows with strong female leads... provided the characters, plot, acting, visual style, etc are decently done. So, instead of blah blah blah, I'm going to present you my Top Five Movies With Strong Female Lead Characters! Adventures in Babysitting (1987)-  Starring Elizabeth Shue, this movie chronicles the adventures of  a babysitter as she takes her charges across town to rescue a friend from the bus station. A strong female character who -- while having vulnerabilities faces up to the challenges in front of her,...

Top Five Educational Shows From My Youth

In addition to horror movies... and animated movies... and having an opinion about people who say stupid things... I enjoy watching educational shows, and learning. With that in mind, I present my Top Five Educational Shows From My Youth! " Dirty Jobs " with Mike Rowe-  This show ran from 2005 - 2012, and featured Mike Rowe getting dirty and stinky while learning about some of the jobs that most people wouldn't want to do... but need to be done in order for Society to function. Some of the jobs explored were: worm dung farmer, removing gum from sidewalks, owl vomit collector, cleaning animals skulls, and blood worm digger. Each show had a sense of humor, while making the audience appreciate the people who work hard in the "dirty jobs" so we can live like civilized people. " In Search Of " with Leonard Nimoy-  This was a favorite of mine growing up.  It ran from 1977 - 1982.  Each episode covered a different theme, and explored aliens, ...

Top Five Non-Fiction Books to Turn Into Movies

Hey, everyone!  Mike S here with another Top Five List!  This time, I'm listing the Top Five Non-Fiction Books to Turn Into Movies! 1.  "Hunting Eichmann" by Neal Bascomb-  This is a really interesting and exciting book about a group of Holocaust survivors who joined forces with the newly formed Mossad to hunt down Adolf Eichmann and bring him to justice.  It's an incredibly fascinating read, and I think it would make an equally fascinating movie. 2.  "Gallipoli" by Alan Moorehead-  I know a movie about Gallipoli has been made- but I think that this book would be a wonderful basis for another one.  Just an amazing account of the tragedy that enshrouded the whole affair. 3.  "The Murder of Napoleon" by Ben Weider & David Hapgood-  I found this book to be a really unique and interesting examination of Napoleon's last years- and investigation into his mysterious death. 4.  "The Murder of Tutankhamen" by Bob Brier, PhD-...

Halloween Day by Day: Top Five Horror Funko Pops I Want

If you're a collector, then you're all aware of what Funko Pops are- "cute" little figures based on all sorts of movie, television, and comic book characters.  Well, I've compiled a list of the Top Five Horror Funko Pops I Want... Alien Face Hugger-  Let's start with one from one of my favorite franchises: "Aliens".  The Face Hugger is an iconic alien terror that brings tremors of fear to pretty much anyone that thinks about what it does to you. But hey, it's also giving you free hugs, so it's not ALL bad... right? I don't think a collector of "Aliens" merch would wish to NOT have this one in their inventory. And let's face it... it's kinda cute... in a creepy sort of way, right? Right Ash-  Seriously, given my love of horror and comedy, you all had to expect that Ash from the "Evil Dead" franchise would be on this list. This one just looks really cool, with Ash bearing his trademark boomst...

Halloween Day by Day: Top Five Lesser Known Serial Killers to Make a Movie About

We all know that several horror movie killers are based on real life serials (with Ed Gein being the most prolific template), right?  Well, I've found five lesser known American serial killers that I think would serve as a great basis for horror movies. So, here are my Top Five Lesser Known Serial Killers to Make a Movie About! H.H. Holmes-  In 1887, Holmes started construction on a hotel... but it wasn't an ordinary hotel.  The hotel was designed so that he could move about unnoticed, select his victims, then kill them before sending them down chutes to the basement. There, Holmes would dissect the corpses- the skeletons and organs of which he would then sell to medical schools in the area.  During this time period, few medical schools asked questions about where such things came from. To learn more, check out his Wikipedia Page ! The Postcard Killer:  J. Frank Hickey committed his first murder at the age of 18.  From there, he would wande...

Halloween Day by Day: Top Five Haunted Dolls

There are two things that can be guaranteed to make a horror movie creepy as fuck.  Killer children, and haunted dolls. Hell- even non-haunted dolls are enough to creep people out.  *shudder* So, I figured it'd be cool to list my Top Five Haunted Dolls!  Sooooooo, let's get to it! Annabelle-  I think it's safe to say that Annabelle is probably the MOST famous of the haunted dolls on this list.  The details of the haunting surrounding this doll are fascination and unsettling at the same time.  This isn't helped by the fact that Raggedy Ann dolls were such a symbol of innocent childhood and companionship. Ed and Lorraine Warren introduced the world at large to this scary doll- and inspired "The Conjuring" spin-off "Annabelle". I must confess though- the original Raggedy Ann doll is more eerie than what was used in the movies. Mandy-  The Quesnel Museum in British Columbia is home to this porcelain doll made between 1910 and 1920. ...

Halloween Day by Day: Top Five YouTube Channels With Scary Videos

The internet is a marvelous and terrifying place at times.  One of those places that is both awesome and at times scary is YouTube.  In addition to theatrical horror movies, I really enjoy watching "real life" ghost videos on YouTube.  As such, I have a few channels I subscribe to that showcases a variety of scary videos- either ghost, urban exploration, cryptid, etc. Below, you'll find my "Top Five YouTube Channels With Scary Videos"! This is one of my favorite channels.  They showcase a broad range of videos from ghost all the way to cryptids.  The lengths of the videos are generally just long enough to be enjoyable without dragging on unnecessarily. The narration is also very good as well.  Suitably professional without being over the top.  It has a nice flow and pacing to it as well.  It fits well with the type of video, and isn't annoying or distracting. I certainly recommend you check it out here:  Nuke's Top 5 . Anoth...

Mike S's Top Five Horror Movie Posters

One of the things that attracts us to a movie- besides the trailers, is the movie posters.  They have to be eye catching, and able to hint at what the story's about without spoiling it.  They have to make you curious, and want to plunk down your cash to sit in a theatre seat and watch the movie. So, with that in mind, I'm going to present my Top Five Horror Movie Posters:

Mike S's Top 10 Movies to See Before You Die

If you listened to the Extended Edition of the podcast this week, you would've heard Jay and Shawn mention a couple of movies they feel people should watch before they die.  Well, time for- you guessed it- my top ten movies to see before you die... but with a twist.  Five of them are great movies that sit solidly in "The Good"... and five of them sit either in "The Ugly", or the dumpster next to it... Five Great Movies to See Before You Die: 1.  " The Changeling" (1980) - One of my favorite horror movies.  Stars George C. Scott in a rare role showing vulnerability.  Great cast, great art direction, great camera work- just an all round great movie. 2.  "Hamburger Hill" (1987) -  One of those rare war movies that I really enjoyed- which is actually pretty high praise from me.  Just a phenomenally well crafted and organic movie. 3.  "The Hitcher" (1986)-  Another of my top five horror movies.  Stars Rutger Hauer in a movie t...

Mike S's Top Five Animated Films to Do as Live Action

Disney has- for some reason (aka "Cash Cow"), started remaking some of their classic animated features into live action ones.  This got me thinking... what animated films would I like to see as live action films? Well, we don't have to wait, as I'm going to answer that question right now.  Here are my top five animated films I'd like to see remade as live action features.

Mike S's Top Five Creatures That Deserve to Be on the Big Screen

Those of us in The Basement are involved in a special film project with John Fallon called " No Man's Ridge ".  It's about a group of hunters who wind up in the sights of an angry Sasquatch. Because of that, I was thinking about what five creatures I'd love to see in a movie.  With that said, let's get to it!

5 Grimm Fairy Tales I'd Like to See as Movies

We were all kids once... or at least I'm assuming we all were. Anyways, as kids we all heard or read the classic Grimm Fairy Tales, right? Right.  I'm going to assume you said, "Right".
