Mike S's Top Five Canadian Shows That Deserve a Reboot or Movie

I am a Canadian.  As a Canadian, I am well aware of the Canadian Broadcast Corporation (CBC).  As a Canadian, I am also aware of the many great Television shows produced for the CBC over the years. Which brings me to this list.  These are the top five Canadian Television shows I think deserve a reboot or a movie!

Monday Retro Review: Outland

Outland is a movie I vaguely remember watching on TV with my dad. He was a huge fan of westerns and Sean Connery , so this sci-fi flick was right within the old man's wheelhouse. I remembered it being good, so when Basementites voted it as this week's retro review, I was pretty pumped. Was my enthusiasm justified? Stick with me! In the distant future, a police marshal stationed at a remote mining colony on the Jupiter moon of Io uncovers a drug-smuggling conspiracy, and gets no help from the populace when he later finds himself marked for murder.

TV Review: Halt and Catch Fire (AMC)

Matt Bellamy here. AMC has made available the first episode in their latest original series, ' Halt and Catch Fire ', ahead of its June 1st premiere date, and I have seen it! How does it stack up against other AMC greats such as Mad Men , Breaking Bad , and The Killing? Let's find out. 'Halt and Catch Fire' tells a fictionalized, and dramatized story set in 1983 centred around a group of computer programmers attempting to reverse engineer an IBM computer. Why would anyone want to do such a thing? Well, aside from being quite illegal, it could also be potentially extremely beneficial in a number of ways--financially, and technologically.

Friday the 13th TV series on the way

Given the varied success of A&Es Bates Motel and NBC's Hannibal , I suppose it was only a matter of time before someone thought of bringing the story of Crystal Lake's least favourite citizen to the small screen . Turns out that someone is Friday the 13th creator Sean S. Cunningham and horror documentarian Dan Farrands, as a  TV series about the life and times of Jason Voorhees is indeed on the way.

Grave Encounters directors tackle aliens with Extraterrestrial

Shawn and I are big fans of Grave Encounters,   The Vicious Brothers ' riff on paranormal "reality" TV . It's sequel not so much, but the boys do have talent and know how to stage a scare. So what are they up to next? Turns out they have a new flick that'll premiere in just a few days at the Tribeca Film Festival , and they're trading ghosts for space invaders.

The next evolution of The Basement . . . ish

We interrupt your Sunday night for an important announcement . . . there will be no more seasons of Film Reviews from the Basement . . . . . .  because we're now going to be doing the show year round!

The Basement on the CBC

On Friday, March 21, The Basement ventured off the Internet and campus radio and was featured on Daybreak Kamloops , the morning program for our local CBC affiliate. For those who aren't in the know, the CBC is Canada 's national broadcaster . Think the BBC for Canada. Kind of a big deal.

Another Mischief Night movie headed our way

No, this isn't a sequel to the Mischief Night we reviewed earlier this year . It is in fact the same Mischief Night mentioned on this site before we even knew about the Mischief Night that stars the brother of the guy who starred in Sliders. Travis Baker's flick will finally see the light of the day via After Dark Originals, which is part of Lionsgate yo, who unleashed a new trailer today. And we have it for yah.

Lacey Chabert rolls in the hay with SyFy's Scarecrow

I know the headline is cheesy, but so are most of SyFy 's original movies. So call us even. That said, I've enjoyed most of what SyFy has come up with over the years. And who doesn't like a decent killer scarecrow movie? They are so few and far between. Throw in Black Christmas/Lost in Space hottie Lacey Chabert and I'm down. For generations, it was an urban legend that lived in the nightmares of children. Now, the season to rejuvenate the tale will revive a town’s darkest fears. With the Scarecrow Festival on the horizon, school teacher Aaron Harris is doling out punishment for six students serving detention, including the moody Tyler , Goth girl Nikki, wrestling team captain Daevon, and straight-A student Jun. Their task: help Aaron ’s girlfriend Amanda fix her family farm before it’s sold. But the cornfields circling the farm come with a legend-and Tyler takes macabre delight in recounting the tale: It never sleeps, it never dies, it can’t be st...

Ms. Vampy wants you!

Not in that way you perverts . . . although a man can dream ;) No, Basementites, our favourite vampire web series hostess with the mostess has a new Internet show headed our way called Ms. Vampy's Bites, and she needs her fans' help to make it happen. An interactive advice show, Ms. Vampy, AKA Brooke Lewis, wants YOU to send life-advice questions her way so she can answer them on the show. All you gotta do is fire one off to Ms. Vampy's Bites at msvampybites@msvampy.net and include your full name, city and the state (or province) you're in. It's just that easy. What kind of credentials does Ms. Vampy have? She's a life coach to the stars for one. She's 110 years old -- just don't tell her we dropped her age -- and has accumulated some life experience along the way. Granted, she thinks True Blood is a reality TV show and wants to make out with Robert Pattinson , but nobody is perfect. Anyway, fire off them life-advice questions and we'...

The Basement wants you -- to pick the movie!

No, we're not muscling in on Mike S 's What Movie Wednesday duties, but we're already looking ahead to season five and hope you Basementites can help us out. See, we review about 44 to 48 movies a season, and finding that many B-grade horror, action and sci-fi flicks -- not to mention the odd comedy and documentary -- isn't always easy. This is where you, the listener, come in. We want YOU to leave a comment here on the site or on our Facebook fan page and group page and let us know what movies you want us to watch. You can also email a suggestion to basementreviews@gmail.com. We don't want our listeners to give us a whole season worth of films, but we'll watch a couple of fan picks here and there during season five. If we pick your flick, we'll send you some cool Basement swag. There you have it -- You Pick the Flick! And get some cool shit doing it. Stick with us! John Fallon preps feature directing debut The Shelter

That's right peeps, The Arrow himself is at it again. And not only has he started pre-production on The Shelter , his first feature as writer AND director, but he's launched his own production company as well -- Bruise Productions. John is still casting and scouting locations for The Shelter, a horror film , and intends to shoot before the end of the year. I've included the promotional poster and synopsis below. If you want to check out the slate of films Bruise has on the go, click here . You might recognize the name of a dude he's hired to write one of the movies :) On a star filled night, widower and homeless man Thomas finds shelter for the night when he falls upon a vast two story house with the lights on and an inviting open front door. He strolls on in thinking he just caught a lucky break and for a while, it would appear that he did. Inside, there’s nobody in sight and he finds all of the comforts that he used to have. After taking a bath, feastin...

Shawn and Greg versus Gless and The Mockingbird

Gless Shawn: I now have a NUMBER one most hated movie. I know I understand this movie, and can say it IS definitely film festival material. For sure. Not my style at all. It began in darkness and each minute forward, it became more and more abrasive, like petting a cat backwards. I ended up loathing it by the end. The actors were not what I was used to, as they seemed to be "theatre" people. Ha ha. Which is fine, but not my thing, even less when coupled with this artsy, articulated wordy venue. I'm sorry, but I found it too complex, in a sense, to enjoy. That is my simplicity, and makes it an UGLY. Greg: Hey Basement Fans! It's Game Time With Greg, not Jay this week. We have a couple of movie reviews for you guys from Herbivore Productions. First up we have the self-inflicted, image-distorted and mental-struggle horror movie called Gless. We will start off with a warning... it's all black and white . So don't try to fix your TV . W...

AMC buys rights to Dan Simmons' novel The Terror

I read Dan Simmons ' period horror tale The Terror back in 2008 and thought it'd make for one kick ass movie or miniseries. And, true to what happens here in The Basement when it comes to Shawn and I getting cool ideas, someone was listening and made it happen. AMC revealed today that its purchased the rights to Simmons' epic novel , which is set in 1847 and follows a naval expedition through the Northwest Passage . The challenges of cold and land begin to seem ordinary in the face of a grotesque monster that lurks near the ships.  The TV version of The Terror is being written by David Kajganich, who is adapting Stephen King's The Stand for the big screen . Kajganich will also executive produce alongside Ridley Scott , David Zucker , Alexandra Milchan, Scott Lambert, Meghan Lyvers, and novelist Simmons.  If done right, this will be a winner up there with AMC's The Walking Dead. It's a big, scary story that only falters toward the end. Spoiler alert...

Shout! Factory picks up Dead Shadows

Some very good news reached The Basement today as home video distributor Shout! Factory has acquired the rights to a movie we very much dig, Dead Shadows! That's right, the one starring our bro John " The Arrow " Fallon. There is much rejoicing! Shout! Factory secured extensive rights to the French action/horror film, including Electronic Sell Through ( EST ), Video On Demand (VOD) , Subscription Video On Demand (SVOD) and TV . The flick will hit some time later this year. As always, we'll keep you posted. In addition to our main dude, Dead Shadows stars Fabian Wolfrom, Blandine Marmigère and Rurik Sallé. To catch up on our thoughts about it, read here . Dead Shadows tells the terrifying story about a young man, Chris, whose parents were brutally killed 11 years ago, on the same day that the comet of Haley could be seen from earth. Tonight, a new comet is going to appear and everyone in his building are getting ready for a party to celebrate the ev...
