B. Harrison Smith returns to The Basement

Seven years ago we dedicated an entire month to the movie 6 Degrees of Hell, an ahead-of-its-time haunted attraction flick starring Corey Feldman. We interviewed the entire cast, the director and the film's writer, B. Harrison Smith. We consider ourselves lucky to have befriended Harrison. Not only is he a talented filmmaker, and decent guy, but he opened the door to other interviews, which is something Shawn and I always appreciate. Harrison has gone on to direct such genre films as Zombie Killers, Camp Dread and Death House, and work with the likes of Kane Hodder, Tony Todd, and Eric Roberts. And he's got a new flick coming out called The Special, which we highlighted right here . It's best described as Fatal Attraction meets The Blob. If that doesn't sell you on the movie, I don't know what will. Shawn and I figured it was time to bring Harrison back on the show, and talk his career, the horror genre, and the state of the world in general. I had a great c...

The Drunken Review: Victor Crowley

What the hell, Jay!?! Another Drunken Review? The heck is a matter with you? You on vacation or something? As a matter of fact, I am. And it's almost over. Now piss off and let me review (ish) Victor Crowley before I pass out, would yah! Not a question. A statement.

Jason versus Digging Up the Marrow

I've said this on the show, and I will say it again here: at some point in a filmmaker's career he or she will want to make a movie about making movies. Why? Because making movies is fun and people are interested in it. But is it an interesting enough topic for a feature film? Well, when left in the hands of a horror-movie director like Adam Green, and when said horror-movie director decides to make a fake documentary featuring himself and his crew going in search of monsters, it just might be. So, you know, stick with me!

Camp Dread director unites horror icons for Death House

That's right, our pal Harrison Smith has brought together Robert England, Danny Trejo, Dee Wallace, Doug Bradley and a many, many more of horror's familiar faces for an upcoming fright film that should please any genre fan. Long-time listeners and readers will remember Harrison has the man behind 6 Degrees of Hell and Camp Dread, two flicks Shawn and I enjoyed. And he was responsible for us interviewing Corey Feldman and Eric Roberts, which are high marks in Basement history.

Go behind the scenes on John Schneider's Smothered

It's been a month since we told you about John Schneider 's upcoming horror/comedy Smothered. That's right, Bo Duke directed a horror movie ! You might remember us talking about the flick, which brings together The Expendables of Horror, so to speak. Smothered had its premiere in New Orleans a couple of weeks back, and went over really well. Word has it the film hits theatres later this year.

Bo Duke assembles "The Expendables of Horror" for Smothered

Y'all remember Bo Duke , one of the titular heroes of The Dukes of Hazard , don't you? Well Bo, AKA actor/director John Schneider , has rounded up some of horror's most famous faces for his upcoming comedy Smothered. Dubbed The Expendables of Horror, Kane Hodder , Don Shanks , R.A. Mihailoff , Bill Mosely and Brea Grant star in the flick as themselves. Word has it this is the largest gathering of horror icons in one film ever.

Jason Voorhees kills again in 2015

First the latest chapter in the Insidious franchise claimed a 2015 release date and now another popular, and long running, horror series has asked fans to save the date that year. The next Friday the 13th movie lands on March 13, 2015. That's a Friday, for the record. Nothing else is known about the flick. There's no script or director attached, no confirmation on whether or not it'll be a direct sequel to the 2009 film or found footage, as some recent rumours suggest. And no one has been cast, so who's to say if Derek Mears , Kane Hodder or any of the other former Jasons will once again put on the hockey mask and wield the machete. What we do know is countless Friday the 13th fans just plugged that date into their calendar. More on this project as it develops. Jason and Shawn versus Hatchet III

Jason: Hatchet III might very well be the greatest movie ever made. Sure, there's better movies. More award-worthy movies. Classics that stand the test of time. But Hatchet III knows what it is, knows what its fans want to see, and delivers on every count. Few movies can say that, especially those pretentious Academy Award movies. I spit on them. Hatchet III gives us the goods. It shows us all the kills, all the gore. There's humour here too, although not as much as the first two movies. But who cares? I've bought it already. I will watch it again and again. Hatchet III is a Good and then some. Shawn: Sometimes a movie can tick all a dude's boxes on a day that fits whatever mood he's in. Today, that movie is Hatchet III. Sometimes I say (without going all gore porn like Saw ) "show us the damn head stomp, show us the ripping in half"....it's soooo frustrating when a movie doesn't. That said, there is a line between gore porn and nec...

The August Special: Hatchet III

With great power comes great responsibility, which is why Jason and Shawn are back in the podcasting business with this latest episode for your ear holes. This time around the Basement Boys talk movies. SURPRISE! A whole bunch of movies before diving into the main event , a review of the third installment in Adam Green 's Hatchet series. Appropriately enough, it's called Hatchet III . What's it about? Killing and shit. But seriously, here's the official synopsis: a search and recovery team heads into the haunted swamp to pick up the pieces from Hatchet II, and Marybeth (Danielle Harris) learns the secret to ending the voodoo curse that has left Victor Crowley (Kane Hodder) haunting and terrorizing Honey Island Swamp for decades. Does this latest entry in the series live up to the first two, even without Green in the director's chair? (he's back as screenwriter) Stick with us as the August Special lands tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. pacific. Now for...

The Basement vs Hatchet III

That's right, bitches! Shawn and I are sobering up long enough to share our thoughts on the latest installment of a franchise we know most Basementites are down with -- Hatchet III! You know: Victor Crowley, Kane Hodder, Danielle Harris, and scores of awesome and gory deaths? Hatchet? III? For the uninitiated, here's what the third flick is about: a search and recovery team heads into the haunted swamp to pick up the pieces (body parts from Hatchet II we'd assume) and Marybeth learns the secret to ending the voodoo curse that has left Victor Crowley haunting and terrorizing Honey Island Swamp for decades. We'll be recording our thoughts next week and launching this mofo before the end of the month. Then it's only a few short weeks before we give birth to something we like to call Season Five of Film Reviews from the Basement. More on that as the date nears. Stick with us!

Hatchet III trailer is a bloody good mess

Man oh man, this preview for Hatchet III was so worth taking a break from the tequila for. There's Red Band trailers , and there's this trailer for Hatchet III. It has balls . . . literally! Hatchet creator Adam Green has handed the directing duties over to BJ McDonnell for this one, but the trademark Hatchet gore and humour is alive and well. As are series vets Danielle Harris (pictured above) and Kane Hodder . A search and recovery team heads into the haunted swamp to pick up the pieces and Marybeth learns the secret to ending the voodoo curse that has left Victor Crowley haunting and terrorizing Honey Island Swamp for decades.  Hatchet III hits theatres June 14. A bootlegged clip from Hatchet III

A bad-to-the-ass bootlegged clip from the upcoming slasher sequel Hatchet III has made its way online! Why is it bad to the ass, you ask? Because it's got a bunch of dude's with guns -- including Derek Mears and Zach Galligan -- attempting to put the smackdown on swamp ghoul Victor Crowley, once again played by Kane Hodder. And Crowley will have none of that. The clip is rough, but awesome. Shawn and I loved the shit out of the first two Hatchet movies, and this will be one to watch when it hits some time next year. This time around a search and recovery team heads into the haunted swamp to pick up the pieces and Marybeth (Danielle Harris) learns the secret to ending the voodoo curse that has left Victor Crowley haunting and terrorizing Honey Island Swamp for decades. Now watch the clip, bitches!

Kane Hodder and Danielle Harris back for Hatchet 3

We reported just a week or two ago that Hatchet 3 will shoot for a 2013 release date. Now we've got confirmation via HorrorMovies.ca that Victor Crowley himself, Kane Hodder, and his favourite victim Marybeth, Danielle Harries, are also returning for another go-round. Here's more from the official press release. Dark Sky Films and Ariescope Pictures are pleased to announce that Kane Hodder and Danielle Harris have joined the cast of HATCHET 3, the next exciting chapter in the horror saga of swamp-dwelling killer Victor Crowley, which will be written and produced by Adam Green and directed by BJ McDonnell. Kane Hodder portrayed the evil Crowley in 2006’s original Hatchet and continued in the role in Hatchet II. In that 2010 hit, Danielle Harris took over the role of Marybeth, the young woman who, at the movie’s climax, managed to escape Crowley’s clutches (and, apparently, kill him). The new movie continues where Hatchet II left off, as a search and recovery t...

Hatchet 3 slays again later this month

We reported more than a year back that writer/director Adam Green was prepping a third film in the saga of Victor Crowley. Now we've received word via HorrorMovies.ca that Hatchet 3 is indeed a go. Kane Hodder, who played the swamp ghost Crowley in Hatchets 1 and 2, let loose during a recent Q&A at Shock-Stock in Ontario that the film would begin shooting in Louisiana at the end of April. He also told the convention crowd that Hatchet 3 will be even more violent than the first two. I'd buy that for a dollar! There's not much more to say at this point other than we'll keep you updated. Shawn and I dug the first two Hatchet films a lot, and the world can always use more Victor Crowley. And blood. And boobies. Stick with us!

Micro Review: Hatchet

Revisiting Adam Green's Hatchet years after its release I had forgotten how much fun the film is. More so than any remake or retread Hollywood has produced lately, this film captures the look and feel of 80's slasher movies in every gory detail. It's campy, corny and bad, but in the best possible way. Hatchet knows it's a loving tribute to 80s horror, and plays up to that fact. Writer-director Green has also created a new horror icon in Victor Crowley, whose back story and penchant for ripping people apart guarantee he'll be murdering horny, partying teens for years to come. A Good review from The Basement on this one.

Hatchet 2 Teaser Trailer Is Unleased!

Everyone who saw Adam Green's awesome 80's slasher movie throwback Hatchet raise your hand. That's everyone? Good. That film was a loving tribute to Friday the 13th and every generic gore fest that came in the wake of the original Halloween. It was low on plot and big on gore. Lotsa gore. Great gore. It was gorerific. It also introduced us to Victor Crowley, who has all the makings of a great horror icon. Now Green is back with the inevitable sequel. I'm sure more heads will roll. Literally. Hatchet 2  follows Marybeth (Danielle Harris) as she escapes from the clutches of Crowley (Kane Hodder), learns the truth about his curse, and heads back into the haunted New Orleans swamp to seek revenge for her family and kill Crowley once and for all. Take a gander at the teaser below, and prepare for the film's limited release Oct. 1 . . . just in time for the premier of our radio show!
