Review: Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

My wife and I have a Christmas tradition, which is we go see a new Star Wars movie together on the years one is released. We wait a week or so to avoid the craziness that comes with a new entry in the franchise, and have yet to be disappointed. That's right, we liked Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker! I admit, I was a little leery about this one, as critics and fans have been less than enthusiastic. And the film does get off to a bumpy start, with a shaky first act and far too much exposition early on. Then things settle into the story, and the fun begins. Sure, a lot of the humour doesn't work, and for a good chunk of the running time The Rise of Skywalker plays like any other decent Hollywood blockbuster. It's got the action, the spectacle and it's entertaining. That's all great, but it didn't feel like Star Wars. Then something happens toward the end of the second act... something I didn't expect... and The Rise of Skywalker became a Star Wars movi...

"They fly now" in first Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker clip

There's less than a month to go until Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theatres, and the Disney marketing machine is in full swing. I was hesitant to post this clip, which came out earlier today. Like many, I want to go into this thing as cold as possible. Then I said "what the hell" and watched it anyway. And now I post it here for those of you who also have a Devil-may-care attitude. Enjoy! The Rise of Skywalker hits theatres Dec. 20, and J.J. Abrams and company have promised to conclude the entire Skywalker saga with this one. Then we get a three-year break before any more stand-alone films surface. Oh, and this ninth entry in the series clocks in at two hours and 35 minutes, so go pee before it starts. Just FYI. Source: Star Wars

The end is near in this final Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker trailer

I don't know how it happened, but this final trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker made me a little misty eyed. It might be the fact the nine-part Skywalker saga concludes with this entry, and the story has been a huge part of my life for most of my life. It could have been the moody use of the Star Wars theme. Or it could be the way C-3P0 says "I'm taking one last look, at my friends," and we know he's really talking to us, the fans... All I know is I've got a case of the feels for Star Wars in a way I haven't had since seeing the first footage from The Force Awakens. Oh, and we're promised one mother of a battle too. Colour me excited! Now watch the trailer, my Padawan Jedi: The Rise of Skywalker has J.J. Abrams back in the director's chair, and stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac and one Billy Dee Williams. It opens everywhere Dec. 20. Source: Star Wars

Review: Overlord

A movie about Nazi zombies -- or Nazbies as I like to call them -- isn't what you'd expect Hollywood to release on the Remembrance Day weekend, but I'm glad they did. Why? The world needed a respectable Nazbie movie; one that takes place during the Second World War, on the eve of D-Day, which was called Operation: Overlord, hence this Nazbie movie's title. Longest run-on sentence in history. Doubtful. But I'll get there...

Nazi zombies attack in Overlord trailer

For some reason, the whole idea of Nazi zombies just doesn't get old. It was used to great -- and some times comedic -- effect in two Dead Snow movies. And now J.J. Abrams is bringing the scares and gore in the upcoming period horror flick Overlord. Overlord, for the record, was the code name for the D-Day invasion of Normandy by Allied troops in World War 2. Just so you get the reference here.

Jason verus Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Thirty two years is a long time wait between Star Wars movies. Sure, there're the prequels, but really. Do they count? Not to me. For me, the Star Wars saga went on hiatus in 1983 and didn't pick up until just a few short weeks ago. Thirty two years. A long wait. Was it worth it? Stick with me!

Star Wars: The Force Awakens gets a trailer

Today, I introduced my almost four-year-old boy to the original Star Wars. Not the special edition shit either, but the real deal. The 1977 version. The one, true Star Wars. He loved it. A bit scary in parts, but he couldn't stop watching. Dad achievement unlocked. Also today, the new trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens hit the world, and there was much rejoicing. This trailer gives me chills. Watching it was almost as cool as watching the original version with my boy earlier.

Star Trek 3 beams into Canada

I know reporting on where a movie is going to be filmed isn't exactly the newsiest of things for a site like this to report, but we're pretty big fans of the new incarnation of Star Trek here in The Basement, and we're from Canada -- eh -- so we're a bit excited that the next Trek is filming in The True North Strong and Free. In Vancouver, B.C. actually. Just a few hours drive from Basement headquarters, to be exact.

Is this the Star Wars Episode VII subtitle?

The Empire Strikes Back , Return of the Jedi , Revenge of the Sith , The Phantom Menance , and *snicker* Attack of the Clones . These are the subtitles of the Star Wars saga . We'll disregard A New Hope because Star Wars was just called Star Wars when it first came out. Fuck you, George Lucas .

May the Force be With JJ Abrams

Hey, folks- Mike S popping in to drop the down low on some cool " Star Wars " news.  Now, we already know that Disney bought the rights to the " Star Wars " franchise, right?  Right. We ALSO know that Disney has said that they will be producing three more movies in the series, right?  Right. Now, the news you may not have heard yet: JJ Abrams has been brought on board to direct the first of the new movies. That's right. The man that helped to bring " Star Trek " to a brand new -- and exciting, beginning will hopefully bring the same excitement, enthusiasm, and skill to the new " Star Wars " film. Originally, Abrams declined the position when first approached, but Kathleen Kennedy ( Lucasfilm Chief), was ultimately able to bring him to the table and take the job. As fanboys of both " Star Trek " and Star Wars ", we're glad. Lucasfilm spokeswoman Lynne Hale, declined to discuss the deal, and plans for the mo...

Fringe finale gets teased

Gonna say it right now, I haven't watched the teaser for the finale of Fox's sci-fi series Fringe. My wife and I are just digging into season four, and I don't want even the slightest hint at how J.J. Abrams intends to end things. But I know there are people who want to be teased, which is why we're posting the preview here in The Basement. And, if there are Basementites out there who haven't jumped on the Fringe bandwagon, get your shit together! This is network TV at its finest. In the words of TV Line, the acclaimed series that has explored the human condition through the prism of parallel universes, unexplainable phenomena and unimaginable threats, reaches a milestone 100th episode and comes to an epic and climatic conclusion. First, the Fringe team engages a desperate plan as Olivia embarks on a dangerous and otherworldly journey into the unknown. Then, Peter, Olivia, Walter, Astrid and Broyles face off against the Observers in one final and extraor...

Eleven, count 'em 11, new Star Trek Into Darkness stills

Fresh from the pages of Empire magazine come these new stills from J.J. Abrams much anticipated Star Trek sequel. And now we've got them for your eye holes! Below you will see images of Chris Pine as Capt. James T. Kirk along with series regulars Simon Pegg as Scotty, Zoe Saldana as Uhura, and Zachary Quinto as Spock. We also get to peep Alice Eve as Carole Marcus and main bad dude Benedict Cumberbatch as John Harrison. All we can say is cool! After the crew of the Enterprise find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.   Star Trek Into Darkness opens everywhere May 17.

A full trailer takes Star Trek Into Darkness

A couple or weeks ago Paramount Pictures released a teaser for the Star Trek sequel, and there was much rejoicing. Now get ready to rejoice some more as the studio has unleashed a full trailer offering more . . . of everything. Still no official word on who Benedict Cumberbatch's villain is. There's a lot of speculation, which we've engaged in on this site and the show. But really, do we need to know? Don't we want to be surprised and excited when Star Trek Into Darkness hits theatres May 17? I know I do. I miss the days when movies were something I could get excited about. I haven't been truly excited for a movie since . . . I don't know when. But I'm feeling an inkling of excitement for this. And I am happy for that. After the crew of the Enterprise find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. Paramount keeps killing our ...

The Star Trek Into Darkness teaser trailer

It's Star Trek, only more bad to the ass than ever before. Bring on May 17! After the crew of the Enterprise find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. Shut up and watch, then sound off on our comments section or Facebook pages! Thanks to JoBlo.com for the teaser.

Star Trek Into Darkness gets a poster

It's poster day in The Basement. Just accept it. We do. At least the posters rule. Just look at the gorgeous image above. And, much like the Man of Steel poster, this one for the latest Trek plays against expectations. And I dig that. Granted, it doesn't tell us much about what the sequel to one of the best reboots/re-imaginings ever made is about. We're assured of carnage, that's for sure. And it looks like that carnage takes place on Earth. Take that, peace-loving memory of Gene Roddenberry! For the record, that's the back of villain Benedict Cumberbatch. Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana and Simon Pegg return as Kick, Spock, Uhuru and Scotty respectively. And J.J. Abrams once again sits in the director's chair. Star Trek Into Darkness lands in theatres May 17, 2013. The first trailer is set to appear before The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Thanks to MTV UK for the info.

Star Trek 2 won't shoot in 3D after all

A couple of weeks back we reported that director J.J. Abrams's second Star Trek flick would be filmed in 3D, a decision that baffled and frightened us in The Basement. The first film was great and hugely popular, so why gimmick up something that's sure to be huge hit with audiences anyway? Or so we wondered. Turns out Abrams himself talked with MTV and shot down that rumour. The film will be shot normally and undergo the dreaded 3D-conversion process instead, meaning people will be able to see it in both Ds when it hits theatres in May 2013. This is good news in a sense, as I could care less if Star Trek 2 was in 2D, 3D or even 4D. All we in The Basement want is another Star Trek movie already. Also good news is Abrams dropped that he'd love to shoot the film in IMAX, which The Dark Knight and the latest Mission: Impossible were filmed in. IMAX gives a movie a powerful feel and scope that three extra dollars can't come close to capturing. Seeing the Enterprise war...

J.J. Abrams's Star Trek 2 beams in May 2013, costs three extra dollars to see

It's the U.S. Thanksgiving weekend (enjoy, friends south of the border) and there's a drought of interesting shit to write about, so I guess this will have to pass as news in The Basement on this Thursday night. J.J. Abrams's second, and long delayed, Trek epic hits theatres May 17, 2013 and will be shot in 3D. That's good news/bad news for Basement Dwellers, who love what Abrams did with Star Trek and hate paying three extra dollars to see 3D of any kind in theatres. At least it's being shot in 3D, so the comin'-at-yah thrills should be decent, if not unnecessary. The 3D news surprises me. Abrams's first Star Trek is highly entertaining. A sequel doesn't need a gimmick to make it great as long as his cast is intact and the script is good. And 3D is quickly becoming a thing of the past. An odd choice, Paramount Pictures. Still, we're gonna see it and, if it's even half as good as the first, it will still be a fun two-hour diversion.

Micro Review: Super 8

It's a rare thing in this age of mindless reboots, remakes, sequels and adaptations that an original film comes out of Hollywood. And even rarer still for it to carry the pedigree of J.J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg. This is writer/director Abrams's loving tribute to the escapist movies he grew up with and, as it turns out, the kind I grew up with too. Super 8 is fun, scary, exciting, moving, funny and just gruesome enough. There isn't one scene or moment that doesn't work. It's not a kids' movie, but it happens to be about kids, and because of that Super 8 will appeal to 10-year-olds and the 10-year-old inside of you. It's a rare film that should entertain anyone. A Good from The Basement for me.

Poster Alert: Super 8

The much anticipated film is just days away from arriving in theatres so it's only fitting we provide a look at the latest poster for J.J. Abrams's Super 8. The film looks to be a loving throwback to Steven Spielberg's earlier films and this sweet poster captures that vibe perfectly. I miss the old-school, hand-drawn posters. It's great to see a studio take a shot at one of these again. In case you've lived in a cave for the past year, the plot for Super 8 is as follows: “In the summer of 1979, a group of friends in a small Ohio town witness a catastrophic train crash while making a super 8 movie and soon suspect that it was not an accident. Shortly after, unusual disappearances and inexplicable events begin to take place in town, and the local Deputy tries to uncover the truth – something more terrifying than any of them could have imagined.” Written and directed by Abrams and produced by Spielberg, Super 8 lands in theatres on Friday. Enjoy the poster b...

Super 8 TV spot impresses

Just when it looked like the J.J. Abrams directed/Steven Spielberg produced Super 8 couldn't get any cooler this TV spot had to come along and prove us wrong. Everything about this movie has oozed awesome from the get go. The spot below, which is about a minute long, shows footage not teased at in any of the previous trailers or Super Bowl ad. And everything about it looks like pure cinematic gold. We know Abrams is a solid director. Star Trek and Mission: Impossible 3 proved that. And Spielberg is Spielberg. I love the early Amblim Entertainment vibe this gives off and how it brings kids into the picture without sacrificing thrills. As for the plot: Set in 1979 Ohio, a group of six young children use a Super 8 camera to make their own zombie movie. One night while filming near a remote stretch of railroad tracks, the children witness a truck collide with an oncoming train leading to a catastrophic derailment. Amidst the fire and destruction, something inhuman emerges. ...
