The Steven C. Miller interview, Medical Police and The Marshes

We said it loud and proud last night on the mighty Radio NL 610 AM Kamloops, and now we're ready to say it again with this, the podcast version of last night's broadcast From The Basement! And we've got even more of the interview you heard with director Steven C. Miller -- like about 10 minutes more! Steven shares the details of his latest movie, the action flick Line of Duty starring Aaron Eckhart and Courtney Eaton. He also talks about the impact streaming services like Netflix have had on filmmaking, working with icons Bruce Willis, Sylvester Stallone and Nic Cage, and more. How does a man deal with working alongside his childhood heroes? Stick with us! And stick around as Jason and Shawn review the latest Netflix series, Medical Police, and the horror films The Marshes and Itsy Bitsy. Jason also mangles an Australian accent and Sean Connery's Bond, while Shawn further dissects Netflix's Dracula. How's that for a half-hour descent into popular cul...

Line of Duty, Crypsis, and Netflix's Dracula

It's all over but the shouting... err, that is last night's From The Basement broadcast on the mighty Radio NL 610 AM Kamloops was another roaring success. And now it's time to unleash the podcast. No interviews this week -- we're saving them for the weeks to come -- but we do have several reviews on the chopping block which will surely tickle your ear holes. Jay took in the new Aaron Eckhart action flick Line of Duty, and the monster movie Crypsis. One was great, the other the opposite of great. Hazard a guess which is worth your time? Stick with us! And stick around as Shawn weighs in on Netflix's Dracula, and the sequel to Goon. He also has an amusing story on the limits of friendship, especially when faced with a potential beast in the woods. It's a shocking tale, we promise you that. There's also interesting conversations about the placement of YouTube ads, Ricky Gervais's Golden Globes speech, and too-serious TV. Hey, we warned you this i...

Retro Review: The Monster Squad (1987)

When crafting a month of content targeted at the horror/Halloween crowd, it's important to provide balance between the current, more serious trend in horror, and highlight those movies which focus on how much fun the genre can be. Which is why I present to you a look back at The Monster Squad. The Monster Squad was a little-seen horror/comedy back in the day, but found its audience on home video and TV, and rightfully so. This movie is a hoot, and mixes shocks, laughs and special effects in equal measure, much like Ghostbusters had done a couple of years earlier. As written by Shane Black (who went on to write Lethal Weapon) and Fred Dekker (who directed Night of the Creeps), The Monster Squad is about a group of monster-obsessed kids who discover Dracula, the Frankenstein monster, the Mummy, the Wolfman, and a gill man have taken up residence in the neighbourhood. Naturally, the kids decide to take these creatures out before they destroy the world. What ensues is 80s s...

From the Basement: "Billy the Kid vs Dracula" (1966)

Sometimes, on " The Corner of Terror ", I'll do a special tweet-along called, " What Movie Wednesday ".  People vote on a movie, I watch, tweet-along, then review.  Recently, that movie was " Billy the Kid vs Dracula "! So, here's the review!

Take a second look at Showtime's Penny Dreadful

I've been primed for Showtime's Penny Dreadful  since that first trailer hit a couple of months ago . With the show's May 11 debut just around the corner, the marketing campaign is in full swing and has brought us another . . . look at horror-themed series. Suffice to say, it's an eyeful. Yes, it's been a very puny Easter here in The Basement. Deal with it!

A few thoughts on Dario Argento

After thrashing Dracula last night and watching part of my soul die, I felt compelled to write something up about the Dario Argento I grew to love.

Suzanne Cappelletti versus Dario Argento's Dracula 3D

I don't even know where to begin here, so I'm just going to start. I am a huge Dario Argento fan. Suspiria is my favorite movie of all time. I have the ballerina tattooed on my arm! I'm very sad after watching this. This is a standard Count Dracula story done in the worst possible way. We all know the story and yet... they found ways to make it incoherent and ridiculous.

Jason versus Season of the Witch

The world needs a really good medieval horror movie . Season of the Witch isn't it. I will be brief. 14th-century knights transport a suspected witch to a monastery, where monks deduce her powers could be the source of the Black Plague . First off, don't make a movie called Season of the Witch and not have the main baddie a witch. That's blatant false advertising. A big fuck you to the audience. Spoiler alert, by the way. Second, don't let Nicolas Cage play a Knights Templar . Ever. That's like casting Keanu Reeves in a Dracula movie. It's something you just don't do. Thirdly, fuck this movie. Hard. Aside from some good lines by way of Ron Perlman, a few snazzy visuals and the hotness of Claire Foy as the witch who isn't a witch, this flick is a total waste of time. It annoyed me. Worse, it bored me. Don't bore me, movie! Ugly. Related articles TV: Newswire: American Horror Story picks an appropriately witchy title for its new s...

Jason versus The Monster Squad

Yeah, I've been reviewing a lot of flicks from my youth lately. The Last Starfighter, The Black Hole, and now The Monster Squad. Being one who over thinks things, I wonder if I'm having a belated mid-life crisis. Or maybe I just feel like watching some old movies? Stick with me! Dracula is alive. In fact, he plans to rule the world and that is why he seeks the help of other legendary monsters. However, a bunch of kids regarded by their peers as losers uncover the devious plan and prepare for a counter strike.  The Monster Squad pretty much bombed when it came out, but it's well regarded among genre buffs as a classic of the 80s. This is when kids' movies had mild profanity, bloody violence, showed a girl in her bra and panties, and even mentioned whether or not she's a virgin. And yes, parents were OK with this. Oh, how I miss those days. Nostalgia aside, The Monster Squad doesn't hold up as well as Starfighter and Black Hole. It's still a decen...

NBC's Dracula series has a leading lady

Truth be told, I had no idea there was a Dracula TV series in the works. But, given the success of American Horror Story and the pending arrival of A&Es Bates Motel, horror television is hot right now. Why not cash in on Bram Stoker's classic? Jessica De Gouw (pictured above) will star opposite Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Dracula. My guess is she plays Mina Harker. And yes, fans of CW's The Arrow, Jessica played The Huntress on that show. What's it about? Dracula arrives in London, posing as an American entrepreneur who maintains that he wants to bring modern science to Victorian society. In reality, he hopes to wreak revenge on the people who ruined his life centuries earlier but falls hopelessly in love with a woman who seems to be a reincarnation of his dead wife. No word yet on when this hits the tele. Source: Deadline .

George Bell reviews Van Helsing

I've watched Van Helsing three times now, and while I keep finding things to like here and there, it just doesn't come together as a whole. I really, really wanted to like it more than I do. I'm a fan of Stephen Sommers, and I see what he was trying to do. He wanted to make one big homage to the classic Universal monsters (Frankenstein, Dracula, etc.). That's a noble sentiment, but when ambition outstretches the material, it's time to re-evaluate. Sadly, the changes that I think needed to happen never materialized, and we're left with this mess of a monster movie gone wrong. Van Helsing's biggest mistake is how much ground it tries to cover in terms of combining all these different elements from separate stories. The basic plot centers around Dracula using Dr. Frankenstein and his monster to figure out how to create and sustain life. Dracula and his three brides have tried - and failed - to make their offspring viable, but nature just wasn't hav...

Guest Review: "The Satanic Rites of Dracula"

Mike S reviews a classic horror film- "The Satanic Rites of Dracula". "When I found out that Hammer Films was alive and well again- and in the process of producing a few new horror films, I started getting a little nostalgic. Growing up, I was a HUGE fan of the Hammer horror films, and have been looking for them on DVD for quite a while. A horror library is not complete without at least one of their films. It was with great pleasure when I found "The Satanic Rites of Dracula" on DVD. I was literally, "geeking out" over it. I felt like a kid opening the biggest present under the Christmas tree. It's sad, but true. I couldn't wait to watch it, but I wanted it to be special. At night, with the lights off... alone. Just me, Dracula, and Van Helsing. And, man, was it worth it. By today's standards, this movie might not be considered great- but for me it was fantastic. This film has the British sensibilities for horror, without relyi...
