Ryan Reynolds has an important COVID-19 message

In times of crisis, it's important we have someone to turn to to bring us hope and inspiration. During the last couple of weeks, we've seen many celebrities come forward on social media with words of encouragement. Heck, some have even broken into song, all to make us feel better about ourselves, and the world around us. Well, my man Ryan Reynolds took to Twitter to relay his thoughts on what we should be doing during this pandemic, and who he thinks the real heroes are. I'd paraphrase, but he says it best. Another important message from an important celebrity. Let’s spread the word not the virus. I happily nominate, @stevenpage @Sethrogen and @TerryR49776917 #PlankTheCurve #StayAtHomeSaveLives pic.twitter.com/IRJNI9Y6G9 — Ryan Reynolds (@VancityReynolds) March 23, 2020 Right on, Reynolds! He and his wife, Blake Lively, have also been donating millions to food banks to help those in need, for the record. Stay safe, stay healthy, and STAY HOME people! ...

Having My Say: Netflix fast forwarding not needed

Few can argue Netflix set the bar when it comes to streaming content. Hell, they created the concept, and everyone else has been struggling to keep up. Kinda like what Marvel did with the whole cinematic universe thing. Unlike Marvel, Netflix has had a few stumbles along the way. The first was wanting to put ads between shows, which would slow down binge watching. Fortunately the idea never took off. But their next one could be the biggest blunder of all. Word hit Monday Netflix wants to introduce a new feature allowing viewers to speed up or slow down the viewing experience by .5 time or 1.5 times normal. This has filmmakers fuming, with the likes of Brad Bird and Judd Apatow saying, via Twitter, they intend to fight the streaming giant on this one. Why? They believe viewers should watch a film or TV show in the manner the filmmaker intended. And they have a valid point, which I agree with. Films are often deliberately paced so as to build tension, or moments are slowed ...

The Terrifying Twitter Tweet-a-long Extravaganza!

I'm not usually about all-cap headlines in The Basement. It's the former mainstream journalist in me. You just don't do it... But, when we're talking about our Terrifying Twitter Tweet-a-long Extravaganza, you go all caps, or you go home. It's that simple. Mike S is madly in the middle of our Terrifying Twitter Tweet-a-long Extravaganza as I write this. Like almost nine hours in! I don't know how the man does it, but he does it. He's tweeting about 30 Days of Night at the moment. We encourage you all to stop in and pay him a visit. Follow along for the remained of the day, or just say hello from time to time. His tweets are funny and informative. It's all about being entertaining. We're over at @camethebasement , and he's tweeting until the midnight hour. You can also find Mike S and his tweets at #24HourHorrorMovieTweetAlong. Stick with us! Source: Twitter

Mike S brings a 24-hour Twitter terror treat

Our Mad Twit is at it again. Mike S got his start in The Basement tweeting along to our live broadcasts at CFBX 92.5 FM The X. Hard to believe that was nine years ago! Since then he's moved on to writing articles for this site and doing pre-taped reviews for the podcast. Well, he's back in Twitter mode this Sunday. Yuppers, Mike is taking over our Twitter account for a 24-hour, live-tweet horrorthon. In other words, he's watch non-stop horror movies for a day, and tweeting along to them. Madness, you say? Maybe, but Mike is all about the horror-movie madness and tweeting, so it seems like a marriage made in hell. The fun kicks off at 12 a.m. on Oct 13 and doesn't end until the 13th. You can follow the fun @camethebasement and engage with Mike throughout the tweet-a-long. He encourages interaction and participation. Big thanks to Mike for coming up with the idea and taking it on. It's much appreciated, amigo. Stick with us! Source: Twitter

Neill Blomkamp off the RoboCop remake

Little more than a year ago we told you District 9 director Neill Blomkamp was on board the pending RoboCop reboot at MGM. This was pretty cool news as Blomkamp's penchant for violence and social commentary seemed a perfect fit for the franchise. And he was intent on making it a sequel to the original film, much as the new Halloween was, and would ignore the sequels, TV series, and lacklustre remake. Well, not any more he's not. Check out why from the man himself: Off Robocop. I am shooting new horror/thriller and MGM can’t wait/ need to shoot Robocop now. Excited to watch it in theaters with other fans. N — Neill Blomkamp (@NeillBlomkamp) August 15, 2019 And there is no rejoicing... Funny how studios work. You'd think creativity and talent would trump a need to get something out to the masses. But I've dabbled in this business for nine years now, and shouldn't be surprised this is not the case. My enthusiasm for more RoboCop has wained... but I am...

From The Basement

Regular readers and followers might have noticed a subtle name change on our site and socials within the last 24 hours. Yup, we're no longer going by the moniker We Came from the Basement. Now, our little podcast and entertainment site is simply From The Basement. Yes, the T in the is supposed to be lower case, but this is our site and show, and we can do what we want. Wanna fight about it?

Is Jeff Bridges reprising The Dude for a mystery project?

The Big Lebowski is one of the Coen Brothers' best films. Period. Hands down. Bar none. And a HUGE part of the film's success is due to Jeff Bridges' iconic turn as The Dude, that White-Russian slurping, perpetually stoned bowler. Granted, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi and John Turturro are also amazing, but The Dude is, well The Dude, man.

Marc Natoli and John Fallon re-team for Heretic

We just interviewed filmmaking duo John Fallon and Marc Natoli this morning on our Radio NL 610 AM Morning Show segment, where they talked The Proposal and the upcoming Heretic and The Siege of Robin Hood. But it looks like the two collaborators aren't finished yet. Fallon announced via Twitter that Natoli has signed on to play Davies in Heretic, a medieval action/drama starring Paul Sloan and Mark Lawson. Fallon co-wrote the script and directs.

When a movie trailer is too scary . . .

File this under so dumb it's almost unbelievable, but sadly true. It appears the latest marketing effort for Warner Bros. upcoming Conjuring spinoff The Nun was a little too intense for viewers. So much so it was pulled from YouTube. The video contained a jump scare that was deemed so jolting, it violated YouTube's "shocking content policy." When viewers complained on Reddit and Twitter, the video service pulled the ad.

The Basement has moved . . . ish

After a long hiatus, and a decision to somewhat change the direction and format of the show, activity on this blog will -- at least for the time being -- cease. Sad face is sad . . . Does this mean We Came from the Basement is dead? Narp! Instead, all activity will appear on our long-running Facebook fan page , which you can find right here . That's right, any reviews, news or future shows will pop up as short posts on the fan page . Why? We're too shittin' busy to dedicate a lot of time and thought beyond the shits and giggles we get from doing the show etc. In order to keep things going, we need to simplify. And this is how that gets done. Shawn has pointed out this post has already required more thought than he anticipated putting into things. Dammit, the man is right! Thanks for sticking with us during the starts and stops of the last few years. Please continue to follow us on the Facebook page . Fans can still post whatever they like to our Facebook group pag...

Satan also has a favourite day of the week -- What Movie Wednesday

I'm not going to lie to you. It's getting harder and harder to come up with catchy headline's for Mike S's ever popular What Movie Wednesday Twitter event. But damn, it's just too cool a thing to give up. Headlines, I will keep writing thee! By now, you know the name and the drill, so let's reveal this week's candidates to put on the chopping block:

What Movie Wednesday for the win

How fast time flies, but when the awesomeness that is What Movie Wednesday looms on the horizon, how can one not look forward to a little midweek terror. Not a question. A statement. Voting begins at midnight for this week's What Movie Wednesday tweet fest. And Mike S has dug deep into his cinematic vault to conjure up a trio of possibilities that will, individually and as group, chill your soul. Or his fingers as he tweets away. Or both.

Credit where credit is due: Mike S

We Came from the Basement has a bit of an unsung hero working quietly behind the scenes, lending his wit and words to this show and site. A man who has helped build The Little Podcast That Could into the success it is today. His name is Mike S.

When Wednesdays attack -- What Movie Wednesday is coming!

It's been a fortnight since Mike S switched on Twitter and set his wit and wisdom on a voted upon movie selection, but the hiatus ends now! Well, about 24 hours from now. But y'all get to vote on this week's What Movie Wednesday flick sooner. Then, you know, he'll tweet about it.

Mike S tweets Hirokin: The Last Samurai

After a week's absence, our Mad Twit Mike S returns to the  @camethebasement account for another Thursday night tweet-a-long. And this time he's putting the 2012 indie action flick Hirokin: The Last Samurai on the digital chopping block. Never mind the samurai is played by a white guy. These are movies, for Jebus sake, and such details are trivial.  Besides, Hirokin looks kinda . . . spacey . . . ish. I'm sure Mike S will add more later tonight.

Fear falls midweek

Like sands through the hourglass of time, so too falls the terror that is What Movie Wednesday! That's right, after a week's break, The Basement's own Mad Twit returns for for another go round of horror-related tweets. And he needs your help in selecting the flick that'll land on the Twitter chopping block.

Elizabeth Banks takes on the Power Rangers

I've only caught a handful of Power Rangers episodes in my day, and that's because of the hotness that was/is Pink Ranger Amy Jo Johnson. Otherwise, it isn't my cup of tea. This from a g guy who grew up with the Toho Godzilla movies. Hey, giant lizards are greater than big robots. Truth.

Mike S and his tweets versus Hancock

Remember when Will Smith was somebody? OK, he's still SOMEBODY, but there was a time when he was the biggest movie star on the planet and, if his name was attached to a flick, it pretty much guaranteed box-office success. 2008's Hancock was one of the movies made in heyday of Will Smith's popularity, and before superhero movies became all the rage. It's a dark comedy that plays within the genre while having fun at its expense. And Charlize Theron is in it. 'Nuff said.

Who knows what evil lurks on What Movie Wednesday?

We here in The Basement do, because we're the ones charged with letting you know what flicks you can vote for at the stroke of midnight. That's right, YOU decided what movie our Mad Twit Mike S will tweet along too tomorrow night. In fact, last Wednesday's voting ended in a tie, so he had to tweet along to two movies.

If fear has a name . . . it's What Movie Wednesday

That right ladies and germs, guys and ghouls, it's almost that time again. And that time is almost What Movie Wednesday! Every Wednesday night, long-time Basement contributor Mike S takes to his  @TerrorCorner Twitter account and tweets along to a horror movie. And YOU get to tell him what movie to tweet along too.
