Top 5 Heroes of Halloween

So the big day is upon us. The scariest day of the year. It's Halloween, and we're all entitled to one good scare. Mike S is going to wrap up our Halloween Day by Day his own way, and Marcus Flor has a trick or treat up his sleeve, but I thought it would be fun to share my Top 5 Heroes of Halloween; those characters -- good or bad -- who best represent the holiday, at least to me. So let's get down to business, in no particular order: Laurie Strode As portrayed by Jamie Lee Curtis, Laurie is the very embodiment of perseverance, empowerment and sincerity. She is the most recognized Final Girl, and went from being a sweet, innocent babysitter to one of the toughest, most believably broken survivors in film history. She's vulnerable, but there's never any doubt she could kick ass. I like all of the character's incarnations. It's Laurie and Jamie Lee. It just works. Michael Myers A force of pure evil. A killer without mercy. The less we know ...

The Ultimate Basement Movie and Krampus

What would the Ultimate Basement Movie be? You know, the best movie for guys like Jason and Shawn who like the same kind of movies that Jason and Shawn like? Would it be a cross between John Wick and the Fast and the Furious franchise starring the staff of Hooters? That question, along with several others, will be answered on this, the third podcast into the new run of We Came from the Basement. As for that Ultimate Basement Movie -- stick with us!

Krampus trailer spreads Christmas fear

Being a Halloween man myself, I haven't really bought into the whole Christmas thing since I was a kid. More so now that I am a father for sure, but the scariest night of the year is still my favourite holiday. So when writer/director Michael Dougherty, he who made the Halloween-themed classic Trick r Treat, announced he was making a movie based on the Krampus legend, I got real excited. Now that I've seen the trailer for what I am sure will be a holiday classic -- MY kind of holiday classic -- I eagerly awaiting the flick's Dec. 4 release date.

The MONTH of HORROR - Day 30: Trick 'r Treat

I had a bit of a debate with myself over whether or not to include 'Trick 'r Treat' for yet another instalment of The Month of Horror, and my ultimate decision is that I can't think of another film that encapsulates everything that Halloween really is quite like this now classic fright flick does. Even more so than John Carpenter's 'Halloween', Michael Dougherty's jack o' lantern filled anthology of terror is, in my mind, the seminal movie to watch leading up to October 31st.

A Christmas wish from Trick r Treat

Well, it's actually from Fear.net, but the video below features everyone's favourite Halloween mascot Sam from Michael Dougherty's brilliant Trick r Treat. I don't want to spoil things, but the video -- entitled Happy Holidays -- features everything we've been bred to love about Christmas: snow, snowmen and children having a joyful good time with everything Basementites have grown to love about Halloween: murder, mayhem and a morbid sense of humour. But enough of my idle chatter. Have yourself a merry little Christmas the Halloween way! Cheers to Arrow in the Head for digging up the video.

The Month of Horror Day 31: Trick r Treat

Basement contributor Matt Bellamy has taken it upon himself to watch and review at least one horror movie a day for the month of October . . . because he's awesome that way! Tonight, Bellamy brings it all to a close with a modern horror and Halloween classic. Happy Halloween, folks! What better movie to choose for the big, special day than one that celebrates the holiday better than any other? Trick r Treat is a movie that has unfortunately gone un seen by many which is a damn shame because everything that we love about and/or fear about this day is represented; always check your candy, don't blow out your pumpkin before midnight, pranks going wrong, and not turning your lights on for trick or treatres! These are all stories that are intertwined throughout the movie in anthology form, the characters all weave in and out of each story in some small way, from a deranged father who poisons candy a...

The Month of Horror Day 31: A Horror Triple Threat

The Month of Horror comes to a terrifying conclusion as Basement contributor Matt Bellamy sits down to watch three horror classic old and new: John Carpenter's Halloween, Trick r Treat and The Exorcist! How's he going to live through three frightful films of terror? Easy! He's Matt Bellamy mother bitches!   For the big day you have to go big, or go home, which is where I watch my movies so I guess that's where I'll remain. Each of these three films are special in their own way; 'Halloween' is seminal viewing on the night of ghosts and ghouls, 'Trick r' Treat' is horror anthology done so well you can even smell the lit pumpkins and fireworks through the screen, and 'The Exorcist' is the scariest movie of all time. I think it's too bad there aren't more horror movies that deal specifically with the day of Halloween as there are so many stories that can be told, 'Trick r' Treat' certainly understood that; don't blow...

Back to school Trick 'r Treat style

Waaayyyyy back when our little podcast was just a podcast we reviewed Michael Dougherty's brilliant horror anthology Trick 'r Treat and fell in love with it. And there's few people we've introduced it to who haven't been captivated by its perfect mix of horror, humour and fun. While we wait not so patiently for a sequel, even if it is direct to video, we've got this cool short courtesy of FEAR.net to tide us over. The video features Sam, Dougherty's Trick 'r Treat mascot. It's a quick hit, but it's got much of what made the feature film such a hoot. Enjoy! And remember: less than two months until Halloween!

Jason and Shawn review: Satan's Little Helper and The Girl Who Played With Fire

Satan's Little Helper Jason: Six years is a bitch of a wait to watch a movie, but finally getting to see Jeff Lieberman's low budget horror-satire made this movie geek very happy. Satan's Little Helper is a perfect companion piece to Carpenter's Halloween and Trick r Treat for a late October film festival. Granted, the film is hampered a bit by it's budget, but the ride is still a fun one. On the one hand, the film is a cautionary tale about detached, video-game playing youth. On the other, it's a creepy story about a nameless serial killer going on a murder spree in a small American town . . . with a twist! And we never learn who or why! A Good rating from me! Shawn: Wow. This movie was neat. For the low budget, it was damn well worth the watch. This features a bunch of phenomenal Halloween costumes throughout, including a wickedly creepy Satan outfit worn by the killer. The kid, who ends up being the killer's little helper, deserved a punch here and th...

New horror franchise planned with Costume

The boys at Bloody Disgusting report that offers are being made on a new horror screenplay from writer Carter (Dead Asleep, Near Death) Blanchard titled Costume, with the hope of launching a new horror icon and franchise.  The premise takes a somewhat fresh spin on the cliched concept of an unstoppable movie killer: a costume makes the rounds on Halloween night, possessing whomever puts it on. Actually, that does sound pretty cool. Kill one wearer, and the evil can still live on. Unless you burn the costume I guess. In my opinion, moviedom NEEDS this. The Saw franchise has run out of steam and all Hollywood seems capable of doing is recycling horror icons from the 1980s. Hopefully a major studio will pick up the script and we'll see a decent big-budget horror series back on the big screen. Then again, Hollywood can't seem to do anything right, so hopefully an independent will pick this up instead. Here's a preview for a Halloween-themed horror franchise that Holly...
