Insomniac Theatre: She Gods of Shark Reef (1958)

Movies can transport us to magical lands, take us on grand adventures, and witness feats of wonder. But some movies can make us wish that we'd ridden on the Titanic instead... Two brothers (one good, one bad) wind up stranded on a small island in the Pacific Ocean inhabited by only women.  The good brother falls in love (instantly) with one of the young natives, while the bad brother looks for a way escape before a naval boat rescues them.  Circumstances and greed bring the two brothers to a climatic battle, and oceanic justice...

Retro Review: Battle Beyond the Stars (1980)

Leave it to Roger Corman to come up with a low-budget answer to Star Wars. And to have the stones to base it on classics like The Magnificent Seven and The Seven Samurai. Battle Beyond the Stars is important for a few reasons. It was written by John Sayles, who went on to write such high-profile flicks like Eight Men Out, Passion Fish, and the TV series The Alienist. Oscar winning composer James Horner (Braveheart, Aliens, Avatar and many, many more) got his start here as well.

Review: Dementia 13 (2017)

One of Mike S's all-time favourite movies is Dementia 13, a cheaply made 1960s Roger Corman Psycho cash in written and directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Say that five times fast. Can't do it, can yah. The S and I discovered Dementia 13 by accident many moons ago. It was included in one of those DVD packs with something like 50 horror movies in one set, all of them older flicks in the public domain. The movie itself is a decent ghost story/slasher tale that begged for a remake to flesh out the ideas and add a bit of gore.

Insomniac Theatre: "Swamp Women" (1956)

It's 3:00 am.  The air wafting through the drapes is hot- slowly sucking the moisture from you.  Your restless mind feels clogged with cotton balls. You can't sleep, but you can't fully wake up either. That's when the flickering images on the TV screen catch your attention and you realize that you're watching an old movie. You're watching " Swamp Women "...

From the makers of Sharktopus: Piranhaconda!

Need we say more? We didn't think so. For all the quality films Shawn and I encounter here in The Basement, we still have a soft spot for the really shitty ones. The C-grade shitty ones. And Roger Corman's latest, Piranhaconda, fits right into the mold. And it's got Michael Madsen! This SyFy movie follows a film crew that runs afoul of the titular beast. What follows has all the elements we hold dear: a beast, boobs and blood. CGI supplies the beast and blood, Rachel Hunter and Shandi Finnessey supply the boobs. Sold! I have a feeling this could very well be our September Special in the making, if not one of the flicks we put on the chopping block at the start of Season Four. But those with SyFy can catch it June 16. Until then, enjoy the cheesy as fuck trailer below! "I can't believe you just said that!" Wee!

Jason and Shawn review: Sharktopus and Burning Bright

Sharktopus Jason: This movie isn't as fun as the title suggests. It gives us what we want, which is lots of boobs, blood and a cool beast. There are a lot of kills here, but they do get redundant. The effects are better than both Mega Shark movies put together and, although the acting is pretty bad, everything works on the level of a late night horror movie. If I had a better time with it, Sharktopus would rate a Good. Instead, I have to give it a Bad. Shawn: A low-budget movie featuring the great Eric Roberts, who was introduced to me in 1989's martial art movie The Best of the Best, which was awesome. He's not really a B-movie actor anymore, but it's good to see him stepping into these roles. Sharktopus is a good B-movie; fun and entertaining but predictable. Not the kind you watch more than once, which means it's a Bad in my books. Burning Bright Shawn: A people-eating tiger movie where no people get eaten. An under-clothed hottie and her autistic brother...

A Night of Beasts, Boobs and Blood 2: Sharktopus and Burning Bright

A couple of months back Shawn and I treated listeners to a night of beasts, boobs and blood with our creature-double feature Piranha 3D and Abominable. The response proved so successful that we've decided to do it again! Tonight, Anthony Michael Bosa joins us in The Basement Studios for a pair of reviews that will leave you godsmacked! First up: Sharktopus! That's right: SHARKTOPUS!! From the mind of legendary B-movie producer Roger Corman comes this monster hybrid that has to be seen to be believed. All three of us have seen it, and we share our thoughts with you near the top of the hour. What's it about? Who cares!?! It's a movie about a shark that's on octopus. What more do you need to know? Then we feast our eyes on the lovely Briana Evigan (see pic) as she protects her autistic brother from a man eating tiger in Burning Bright. The life-or-death struggle takes place in a house during a hurricane. Sucks to be them. Does the movie offer thrills and chills o...
