One of Mike S's all-time favourite movies is Dementia 13, a cheaply made 1960s Roger Corman Psycho cash in written and directed by Francis Ford Coppola.
Say that five times fast. Can't do it, can yah.
The S and I discovered Dementia 13 by accident many moons ago. It was included in one of those DVD packs with something like 50 horror movies in one set, all of them older flicks in the public domain. The movie itself is a decent ghost story/slasher tale that begged for a remake to flesh out the ideas and add a bit of gore.
Surprise! Some guy named Richard LeMay DID remake Dementia 13 in 2017. And the movie does expand on all the ideas that begged to be expanded upon.
Unfortunately, the new Dementia 13 is more satisfying for Coppola buffs, and those who've seen the original film, then for contemporary horror fans. Yes, we get more about Kathleen's ghost, and a lot more axe murders. And the backstory behind the greedy fiancee is expanded upon, rather nicely I might add.
But it all seems so . . . standard, which Coppola's original wasn't. Gone are the creepy and gothic imagery and that asshat of a doctor who, although annoying, is missed. The end result? A decent horror remake that offers nothing special. A shame really, as Dementia 13 is a special movie, flaws and all.
So, this Dementia 13 rates a Bad. Too bad to, as it coulda been a Good.
