Into the MCU: Spider-Man: Homecoming

Jay here taking over for Mike S as it's his birthday, and we all deserve a break on our birthdays. But our trek Into the MCU must go on, so I'm stepping in for a look back at Spider-Man: Homecoming, which was the first feature film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to focus on our Friendly Neighbourhood Wall Crawler... with a little help from Tony Stark, who surprisingly provides the movie's conscience. Robert Downey Jr. is awesome, as always. Just in case you're wondering... Although some liberties were taken with the character -- including the inclusion of special suits provided by our man Tony -- this is still the best incarnation of the character ever put on screen. This is largely due to Tom Holland stepping into the tights as Spider-Man. He is THE BEST Spider-Man ever, finding the kid inside the costume which, I admit, brought out the kid inside me. Spider-Man's adventures are supposed to be fun, and this movie is just that. There's equal measures...

Steven C. Miller directs Dolittle to Bad Boys for Life

Two high-profile films take aim at your hard-earned money this weekend, and we've got a star-powered interview for your ear holes as well. Suffice to say, this is going to be a really big show From The Basement on the mighty Radio NL this eve. For one, Jason interviewed director Steven C. Miller about his latest flick, Line of Duty, starring Aaron Eckhart. The film is a loving tribute to 80s and 90s action cinema, which Miller knows a thing or two about. And he's worked with the likes of Bruce Willis, Sylvester Stallone and Nic Cage. Steven discusses the movie, working with his idols, and more during the conversation, which takes place later in the show. As for Jason and Shawn; they're talking the weekend's big releases, which are the much-anticipated Bad Boys for Life starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, and Robert Downey Jr.'s first post-MCU movie, Dolittle. The Basement Boys also get into Netflix's latest offering, Medical Police, the indie horror...

The Avengers go one more round in latest Endgame trailer

We're a few short weeks away from The Avengers: Endgame hitting theatres, and the marketing for what will be one of the year's biggest movies is in full swing. Hence this Special Look trailer, which is really just another trailer, and probably the last before the film comes out. Remember when movies got one, maybe two, trailers prior to release? Yeah, I'm old...

"Whatever it takes," the final Avengers: Endgame trailer

It's rare a trailer will give me goosebumps, but that's exactly what this final one for The Avengers: Endgame did. Sure, we know things are going to (more or less) end on a positive note as this movie takes the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a new direction. But there's something about the promise of a last stand that gives me the chills, in the best possible way.

It's a friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man

I cared less about another cinematic incarnation of 'ole Web Head until the final few seconds of the latest trailer for Captain America: Civil War. Then I was like, all giddy and stuff. 'Cause that little kid who grew up on Spider-Man realized there's a good chance the character will finally be done right now that he's back in the hands of Mighty Marvel. Oh yeah, by the way, there's a new trailer for Captain America: Civil War out. Wanna see it? Course you do.

Marvel's Civil War storyline headed to the big screen

Yeah, I know. Variety broke this yesterday and everyone and their dog has commented. But everyone and their dog isn't The Basement. So here we go. Word has it Robert Downey Jr. will appear in Captain American 3, not as a fellow Avenger but as the villain -- in a sense -- as the Superhero Registration Act makes its way into the Marvel cinematic universe.

If they can't save the Earth, they will make it laugh: The Avengers gag reel

Normally I'm not a fan of gag reels, especially ones that play over the end credits of movies, but I have to admit, there's some pretty funny shit in this one from The Avengers. It's probably the funniest I've ever seen. The gag reel, along with a slew of other goodies, will officially be unleashed when The Avengers is released on DVD/Blu-Ray Sept 25. But you might as well have a gander at it now. It's funny. Trust me. And Jeremy Renner is clearly not a Star Trek fan. Anyway, enjoy the video :)

Jason reviews Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

More of the same from director Guy Ritchie and stars Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, which means if you dug the 2009 Sherlock Holmes, then you'll dig this one too. The first film is one I enjoy more and more with each viewing, and I expect the same will be the case here. What I admire most about A Game of Shadows is that it doesn't just up the action and spectacle, but also the scenes of deduction and reasoning that are the Holmes trademark. Equally great is seeing Holmes match wits with his arch-rival, Prof. Moriarty. Played by Jared Harris, Moriarty is more than an equal for Holmes and Downy Jr. In fact, the film's most exciting scene is a chess match between the two. It's two great actors playing two great characters in a battle of wits. As for the action, there's lots of it and it's all done well. This is not surprising given that it's a Hollywood blockbuster. I especially liked a chase through the woods punctuated by mortar fire. There's no ne...

Jason reviews The Avengers

Best. Comic. Book. Movie. Ever. Well, it at least equals The Dark Knight. But comparing The Avengers to The Dark Knight is like comparing apples to oranges. Christopher Nolan's Batman films are realistic, gritty, crime dramas that happen to be about a guy in a bat suit. The Avengers is a Marvel comic brought to glorious, vibrant life. It's manic, thrilling, fun, funny and doesn't compromise any of it's great characters or the great actors who play them. Everyone is given his or her due and moment to shine. And the amazing set pieces -- including a 40-minute thrashing of New York -- don't overshadow the quieter moments a memorable movie needs. Bless you writer/director Joss Whedon. You were given something that could have backfired horribly and made it shine. You took all these characters, each introduced in a film of their own, and melded them perfectly into one dazzling motion picture, one that demands to be enjoyed again and again. And yeah, I admit it: it needs...

Shawn Reviews The Avengers

So I took a step out of The Basement norm, hit up a big Hollywood summer blockbuster.  On opening weekend. I went in with extremely high expectations for this movie, based on the trailer, and ALL the individual movies that were made to build up this one. I love superhero movies, and I am the biggest Superman fan. Although I have really enjoyed the Iron Man series a lot lately, as they live up to their hype. Effects are top notch, and I don't even see them as effects anymore. Just Iron Man flying around doing cool shit. So with a new Superman coming next year, this movie makes me very nervous and I'll tell you why. The Avengers was ALL kinds of ridiculous. Here is where Hollywood, on the rare occasion, can live up to their hype. This movie opened with some big events, and I was like "It's alright...not skirt blowing..."  But as it progressed, whatever skirt I may have been wearing was ripped off, shredded and had me giddy crazy. This movie felt a lot like...

Suit up in this Avengers TV spot

Call me lazy, but I enjoy posting shit from Joss Whedon's upcoming super-hero epic The Avengers. I see a clip, I want to post. I see a TV spot, I want to post. It's a no-brainer. Just like beer and hot wings. The TV spot below is loaded with action, the sexy Scarlett Johansson kicking ass, the awesomeness that is Robert Downey Jr. and a smiling Hulk. I suspect he's smiling because he's about to smash something. I'm cool with that. The film hits theatres May 4 -- that's less than a month's time! The wife and I are gonna need to secure a babysitter stat. Until then, The Basement will continue to post Avengers deets as we see fit. Sue us. You can't get blood from a stone anyway. In addition to Johansson and Downey Jr., The Avengers stars the Chrises Evans and Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo and some guy named Samuel L. Jackson.

Some new Avengers pics for your eye holes

Simply because we can, we Basement Dwellers have amassed several pics from Joss Whedon's upcoming foray into super hero movies The Avengers. Advance word on the Interwebs is the movie rocks hard! Which is good. And so do these pics below! This is also good. We've got Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Chris Evans as Captain America, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. Naturally, we put beauty before everyone else. The Avengers hits theatres May 4! Scarlett Johansson Chris Evans Chris Hemsworth Jeremy Renner Robert Downey Jr. Samuel L. Jackson

Avengers assemble in the new trailer

We've seen teasers and lengthy Super Bowl spots but the wait for the full Avengers trailer is over. And it was worth it! We've got 'em all: Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Hulk, Hawkey, Black Widow and Nick Fury. And, Hulk aside, they're all played by the actors who immortalized them on the big screen during several Hollywood blockbusters. This is the first time anything like this has been attempted on film. It's a risky venture for Marvel and Paramount Pictures, but under director Joss Whedon, it looks like the gamble paid off. Can't wait to see this on May 4! But I digress too much. Time to shut up and watch the trailer again!

The Avengers Super Bowl spot

One of the best things about the Super Bowl (aside from the cheerleaders) are the commercials. And some of the best commercials are for the upcoming big summer movie blockbusters. For a football and movie geek like me, it's all win. We've snagged the Super Bowl spot for the upcoming super hero epic The Avengers and, while it doesn't show a lot, it makes me even more psyched to see this movie. The concept of all these great characters played by all these great actors from a series of already decent movies in one fucking movie is just too awesome to comprehend. It's enough to give one an aneurysm. There it goes! Anyway, check out the spot below and geek out to the goodness. This movie has a lot riding on it, but I have a feeling it will deliver . . . I hope. Marvel, don't fail me now!!

The Avengers trailer!

Yeah, yeah. We're the anti-Hollywood guys. But how can we not be excited for Marvel and Paramount's adaptation of The Avengers? For one, it brings all of the comic company and studio's super hero big guns together in one film. And it's got a dream cast of Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson and Jeremy Renner, just to name a few. And it's directed by geek fave Joss Whedon! Bah! Enough chit-chat. Because we can, and we should, here's the trailer for The Avengers!

Trailer Alert: Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

The game's afoot in this teaser for the sequel to the surprisingly good 2009 Guy Ritchie film. I felt Ritchie's take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's detective was closer in tone and character to the original stories. And I loved the pairing of Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law. In fact, I can't watch the equally brilliant BBC series Sherlock without seeing Downey Jr.'s influence of the character. Here we've got a glimpse at the story we've been waiting for: Holmes versus his arch rival Moriarty. And there's original Girl With the Dragon Tattoo Noomi Rapace and a bunch of fun looking action scenes. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows is scheduled for release in December and, given my enjoyment of the first film, I could venture to a theatre to see it. But check out the trailer below and judge for yourself.

Micro Review: Due Date

To be honest, I enjoyed this far more than The Hangover, which I believe is highly overrated. Funny yes, but overrated. This is funnier though, and not because of Zack Galifianakis, but despite him. Sure he's OK, but this is Robert Downey Jr.'s show. Seeing him slug an unruly 10-year-old and then get his ass kicked by a war veteran in a wheelchair is bust-a-gut funny. And that's just the tip of the inappropriate iceberg. You need to check yourself before you wreck yourself, because this is Good!

Iron Man 3 fades to Black

I've had an excessively tough time sitting through Iron Man 2. I loved the first movie, dig Robert Downey Jr and think Jon Favreau is the cat's ass as a director and actor. But the second film is just, well, blah. Worse than blah. Boring! Even with Mickey Rourke. What's up with that!?! But I might have to force myself to catch the entire film now that Shane Black is in final negotiations to helm Iron Man 3. Who's Shane Black? He's considered one of the best screenwriters in the business. Black wrote the first two Lethal Weapon movies, The Monster Squad, The Last Boy Scout, The Long Kiss Goodnight, and Last Action Hero (we forgive you for that one, Shane). He also wrote and directed the brilliant Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang, which starred Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer. Oh yeah, he was also one of the soldiers in Predator. The guy who told all the jokes. This is great news. Black's scripts are edgy, funny and violent. He could breathe the right amount of life back ...

Due Date Trailer F$%king Funny!

Robert Downey Jr. and Zack Galifianakis in a road comedy from Hangover director Todd Phillips? Sold! I legitimately laughed all the way through this. So did my wife. I'm pretty sure we'll be braving a trip to the movie theatre come November. Between this and Red, fall is looking pretty good. Hopefully it will make up for the asstacular summer we're suffering through right now. Hopefully Inception breaks the curse. Check the trailer out below, and leave a thought or two.
