Bronzi is back in The Gardener

We in The Basement have become pretty big fans of Robert Bronzi. The stuntman turned action star has made a name for himself being The Man Who Looks Like Charles Bronson, and that's a pretty good niche for a guy who looks like Charles Bronson to carve for himself. Bronzi recently completed work on his next film, The Gardener, which also stars action legend Gary Daniels. This flick features Bronzi as an immigrant worker who lives a quiet life as a gardener at an English manor. He must put his old skills to good use when home invaders threaten the family. Bronzi IS The Gardener. Daniels plays the leader of the home invaders. And we can't wait to see a trailer for this one! In the meantime, check out the official one sheet, which has the best tagline of all time: Rebecca Matthews and Scott Jeffrey direct from a screenplay by Ben Demaree and a story by producer Jeff Miller. The cast is rounded out by Nicola Wright, Sarah T. Cohen and Jake Watkins. No word yet on a rele...

The Rene Perez interview and Don't Run

Jason and Shawn were able to occupy the same space last night -- with social distance measures still in effect of course -- and delivered one of the best 22 minutes of radio in a long time. But if you missed their appearance on the mighty Radio NL 610 AM Kamloops fear not, the podcast version of last night's show is loud and proud! And we've got the full half-hour interview with filmmaker Rene Perez. No measly eight minutes for you guys and gals! Rene talks about his latest film, Cry Havoc, working with Charles Bronson lookalike Robert Bronzi, and how he crafts movies for an audience that doesn't want the squeaky clean, politically correct genre fair Hollywood offers these days. He dives deep into that topic, and why Hollywood isn't taking chances anymore. It's an insightful conversation with a man whose sensibilities are in line with our own here in The Basement. What's Rene say exactly, and what do Jason and Shawn think? Stick with us! And stick arou...

Rene Perez says Don't Run

A couple of weeks ago Jason, Shawn and Amy reviewed the action/horror hybrid Cry Havoc from multi-talented filmmaker Rene Perez. If you haven't seen it yet, you should. It's great stuff for genre fans. When The Basement Boys take to the Radio NL 610 AM airwaves tonight, they're bringing Rene with them to discuss his movie, his career, and Charles Bronson! Well, not Charles Bronson exactly. But Rene took the stuntman who could very much be Bronson reincarnated and put him in front of cameras in a series of B-movies made in the vein of the late actor's work. How'd Rene do this, and is it not surreal working with a man who is an icon reborn? Stick with us! And don't you dare touch that dial as Jason and Shawn review the new horror movie Don't Run, which is about a teenage boy who is afraid to leave his house, but soon discovers fear has found him. Sound confusing? It's not. But is writer/director Ben Rood's flick worth your VOD dollar? Tune in...

Rene Perez brings Havoc to The Basement

On last week's show Shawn, Amy and I reviewed Cry Havoc , an action/horror mashup that brought Charles Bronson lookalike Robert Bronzi into the Playing with Dolls franchise... and there was much rejoicing. Rene Perez is the mastermind behind that franchise, and is a frequent collaborator with Bronzi. He writes, directs, shoots and edits his films, making him a one-man filmmaking army. I had the pleasure of interviewing Rene this morning, and we got deep into a discussion about making genre movies, how his goal is to entertain the audience first, and where he finds all the beautiful woman he casts in his movies. Rene discovered Bronzi, so we also talk about where he found the living embodiment of Charles Bronson, and how he got Bronzi in front of the camera. If you like genre films, and just enjoy being entertained by cinema, this is a great conversation; one we intend to share with you soon. How soon? How about NEXT FRIDAY, May 22, and only on Radio NL 610 AM Kaml...

Review: Cry Havoc

I'm not gonna lie, I wasn't familiar with Rene Perez's Playing with Dolls films going into Cry Havoc, which is actually the fourth film in the franchise. But I had watched Death Kiss, which paired Perez with Charles Bronson look-a-like Robert Bronzi. In fact, he's the reason I checked this film out. Death Kiss wasn't awesome, but it was enjoyable. And I like the idea of someone carrying on the Bronson mantle, as eerie as it gets at times. So having Charles Bronson take on a Jason Voorhees-like slasher intrigued. What would happen? Who would be the victor? What we get in Cry Havoc is a low-budget -- but slickly made -- slasher/action flick. The slasher flick has everything you'd want from such a film: bloody, brutal kills and boobies. The action flick has Charles Bronson... sorry, Robert Bronzi, shooting bad guys. Then the two movies collide at the end. The ending is the only part that really disappointed me. I won't reveal what happens, but I felt a ...

It's the morning after our latest broadcast From The Basement, which means it's time to unleash our Saturday podcast once again! This week Jason and Shawn were stoked to welcome co-host Amy Wickenheiser back to the show after a four-year hiatus! Amy has been a busy gal, appearing in horror movies and touring the festival circuit with some short films. And yes, she'll tell you all about it. She also sounds off on Netflix's Extraction, prompting a renewed conversation with The Basement Boys about the action blockbuster. What impressed her and is she ready for more? Stick with us! Amy Wickenheiser cries Havoc for Extraction

Tonight, former Basement co-host Amy Wickenheiser joins Jason and Shawn at 6:05 for this very special social-distancing episode of From The Basement. How special, you ask? Well, newer listeners are in for a treat as Amy is an accomplished actor and podcast personality who's worked with the likes of Michael Pare and Alyson Hannigan. And she knows a thing or two about moviemaking, so there. She joins The Basement Boys for a further discussion on Netflix's Extraction, giving her perspective on the action blockbuster. Plus she, Jason and Shawn sound off on the action/horror hybrid Cry Havoc, which pits Charles Bronson lookalike Robert Bronzi against a Jason Voorhees-style killer. Sound like fun? Is the genre mashup worth your time? Stick with us! And stick around as Jason, Shawn and Amy provide the lowdown on the latest streaming offerings, and share what they've been watching to make you better informed with your viewing choices. The fun begins right after the six o...

Charles Bronson look-alike returns with Once Upon a Time in Deadwood

Few will argue Charles Bronson's Spaghetti Western Once Upon a Time in the West is a classic. Not just of the genre, but all of cinema. Robert Bronzi's upcoming Once Upon a Time in Deadwood? Well.... Not that I think it looks bad. It actually looks pretty good. Bronzi proved he's the living embodiment of Charles Bronson with the solid Death Kiss, and I'm sure he's gonna put foot to ass here. Plus there's the great Michael Pare, a couple of hot blondes, and lots and lots of shooting. But Once Upon a Time in Deadwood? Hey, if the title puts asses in seats, who am I to judge. Not a question, a statement. And producer Jeff Miller says much of the film was shot where Bronson made Once Upon a Time in the West, which is cool. Here's the trailer: Once Upon a Time in Deadwood also stars Karin Brauns and Lauren Compton. It hits Digital Oct 1, and DVD Nov. 19. And darn tootin' we're gonna check it out! Interview: Dolls producer Jeff Miller

Just the other week Shawn and I reviewed the fun killer-doll flick Dolls, which starred Dee Wallace and is produced by genre veteran Jeff Miller (pictured above, with Danielle Harris). I was supposed to sit down with Jeff last week, but had to take a trip out of town. He and I will record a discussion for the podcast in the near future, but in the meantime, here's an email interview we put together for your reading enjoyment:
