Review: On the Trail of Hauntings Ep. 3

In this latest installment of Small Town Monsters' new web series, On the Trail of Hauntings, we're taken to the Ohio State Reformatory, which is alleged to be one of the more haunted sites in the United States. And, as one would expect given the first two episodes in this series, not a heck of a lot happens.  Spoiler alert. Fans of paranormal reality shows might be disappointed but, if you've ever been on a paranormal investigation, you know this is par for the course. And it's Seth Breedlove and company's insistence on NOT playing things up for the camera that keeps this show interesting for me. Indeed, one of my favourite sequences in this episode is when the STM Squad spends several minutes of screen time figuring out what's responsible for a loud, mysterious banging in one of the reformatory's rooms. They end up explaining it away as a natural occurrence, and I appreciate their willingness to keep it all on the screen. THAT is what real ghost hunting is...

Review: On the Trail of Hauntings Ep. 2

The second episode of Small Town Monsters 's webseries On the Trail of Hauntings opens with the crew chowing down on a pre-investigation snack and talking about whether or not they even believe in ghosts and hauntings.  This is a fitting start given what transpires during the next 35 minutes, as the team investigates the Anchorage Mansion in Ohio, a heritage home with its fair share of alleged paranormal activity. The spirits of dead children are said to manipulate toys and even touch people, a spooky old man (dead of course) peers in at folks while they use the washroom. You get the idea.  As with the first episode, and as is generally the case with paranormal reality programming, the first half of the episode is digging into the building's history and the alleged encounters. The second half has to do with the team investigating on site, in the dark, trying to make contact with the spirits and catch something -- anything -- on camera. What sets On the Trail of Hauntings apart...

Review: On the Trail of Hauntings Ep. 1

How does one review a show about ghost hunting? As someone who makes such a program, I believe I have a leg up on other critics in that regard.  Going in expecting a typical ghost hunting show would be a mistake. In that sense, this Small Town Monsters series, which is exclusive to their Small Town Monsters Squad on YouTube , is a breath of fresh air compared to what you'll see on History or the Travel Channel. For one, the focus of this first episode is as much -- if not more so -- on the story behind the hauntings as it is on the investigation, which is a cemetery that's allegedly haunted by a witch. And the Small Town Monsters team is very much in front of the camera as opposed to behind it, providing a good opportunity to get to know the crew after a half decade of watching their films and TV shows. This is a pretty raw show, which I enjoyed. Those who groove on the Hollywoodized paranormal shows will be disappointed. There's little in the way of mood music, and nary a...

The Basement turns 11

Waaaaayyyyy back in January 2010 two guys named Jason and Shawn sat down with a digital recorder and recorded some thoughts on the movies they'd just watched.  Talking about movies wasn't new to them, but Jay's wife said the guys were entertaining enough they should record what they say and put it on the Internet. They did, and behold the podcast Film Reviews from the Basement was born! Two name changes, stints on campus and Internet radio, and a few co-hosts later, and From The Basement continues to chug along as a prime-time radio show on the mighty Radio NL 610 AM Kamloops. And Jason and Shawn return to the airwaves this Friday night at 6:05 in the P.M. To celebrate another spin around the sun, The Basement Boys take on the first episode of a new Small Town Monsters series, On the Trail of Hauntings. That's right, Seth Breedlove and company are tackling ghosts, something Jason and Shawn know a little bit about. Does the latest STM offering stack up? But that's no...
