Marcus Flor versus Dreamcatcher (2003)

Not sure why, but I've been watching a lot of Stephen King movies lately. This includes the mess that is Dreamcatcher. This movie seems unsure of what it is, and what its intent is. It feels like a Frankenstein's monster of Stand By Me, Slither, and The X-Files. None of these elements really gel, making you constantly question what you're watching. What's most baffling are the main characters. Each is given a psychic power that's poorly defined, and mostly pointless. Plus the wooden performances make the characters feel even more alienating. The next baffling aspect is the mystery, and how it's unveiled. The film starts slow and carefully builds suspense, but this doesn't last. The aliens are explained halfway through in one run-on sentence delivered by a bored Morgan Freeman. From that point on there's nothing of interest left; now you're just watching the cookie crumble. Some weird stuff happens, but it's more laughable than entertain...

Retro Review: Hard Rain (1998)

Disaster movies and action movies can be big business at the box office, so it only made sense someone would combine the two ideas into one high-concept package. That someone was screenwriter Graham Yost who, back in the 90s, was riding the gravy train of his successes with Speed and Broken Arrow. So taking his script, casting then popular Christina Slater, who starred in Broken Arrow, and bringing in Morgan Freeman fresh off the hit Se7en seemed like a slam dunk.

Tag-team review: Dreamcatcher

Because our last tag-team review went over so well, Matt Bellamy and I decided to take on another movie for your reading pleasure. This time, we opted to tackle a flick we know isn't Good, just so we could provide some entertaining insight on a production that had everything stacked in it's favour -- including an uber talented cast and crew and first-rate source material -- yet literally and figuratively shit the bed . . . I mean toilet . . . I mean shit in the toilet . . . Yeah, we watched Dreamcatcher .

Monday Retro Review: Hard Rain

For some inexplicable reason, a flick I watched in 1998 in the land Down Under popped into my head the other day, and just wouldn't go away. Damn you, Christian Slater . Damn you, Morgan Freeman . And damn you, Hard Rain . So is the movie any good? Stick with me. An armoured truck guard finds himself battling rising flood waters, a gang of thieves and a corrupt sheriff when an armed robbery goes bad.

Reach your full potential with this Lucy trailer

We primed Basementites for Luc Besson 's upcoming sci-fi/action flick Lucy just last week. Given the response, you're all looking forward to watching Scarlett Johansson whoop some ass. Now you get to see her do it, as the first trailer launched today.

ScarJo is sexy with a gun in this Lucy pic

I don't know how the super-powered-chick-action-flick (say that 10 times real fast) Lucy slipped under my radar, but I'm ashamed to say it did. For one, it stars everyone's favourite hottie Scarlett Johansson , who we've given a lot of love to on this site due to the upcoming sci-fi movie Under the Skin .

Jason revisits Se7en

Right off the bat, it must be acknowledged that Se7en is one of my Top 5 favourite movies. Which pretty much negates the need to write anything further. But this is my site (and Shawn 's of course) and I'll do whatever the fuck I want. Wanna fight about it? No? Good. Two detectives, a rookie and a veteran, hunt a serial killer who uses the seven deadly sins as his modus operandi.

Gerard Butler, Morgan Freeman up for London Has Fallen

And yes, fictional U.S. president Aaron Eckhart joins Gerard Butler and Morgan Freeman for the sequel to the surprise hit Olympus Has Fallen . Given the title, one can assume our heroes have left the White House for London, England , and not London, Ont. The flick kicks off with an attack on London during the British prime minister 's funeral, which is attended by Butler's U.S. Secret Service agent, the U.S. president (Eckhart) and the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives (Freeman). Some in The Basement didn't like Olympus Has Fallen (talking about YOU Matt Bellamy ) but I appreciated it for it's brutal, 80s-style violence and sensibilities. In fact, the whole movie felt like an 80s action flick, so why not give it an 80s-style sequel? And let's face it, Olympus Has Fallen made $160 million worldwide on a $70-million budget. Bitch made some coin. No word yet on whether or not director Antoine Fuqua returns for more mayhem. Given he's a...

Jason versus Olympus Has Fallen

Shawn and I bitch and bitch about how Hollywood waters down action movies . Gone from most are the graphic violence and foul mouths that made the flicks we grew up with so endearing. Then along comes Gerard Butler and Olympus Has Fallen to prove us wrong.  Disgraced former Presidential guard Mike Banning finds himself trapped inside the White House in the wake of a terrorist attack; using his inside knowledge, Banning works with national security to rescue the President from his kidnappers.  Without a doubt this is the type of flick Cannon Films and Chuck Norris would have made back in the 80s. And I admire the old-school sensibilities at play here. The action is brutally violent and the language foul. Lips are busted and jaws broken. It's awesome. Working against Antoine Fuqua 's film are some special effects that are a step above The Asylum and a seriousness that doesn't suite the cartoon nature of the story. I believe the similarly themed White House Dow...

Shawn VS Oblivion

So I finally got to sit down with Anthony Michael Bosa and watch a movie.  It's been too long. The movie: Oblivion. The reason: We are sci-fi freaks. Haha. This movie is set in the future after a massive war with invading aliens. (We didn't get to see) Humanity "won" the war, but we were forced to use our conventional super weapons(nukes), shitting up the planet too much for humans to prosper on it. So, apparently, the human race bolted to Titan. We left behind massive ocean eating machines that turned water into energy for the colony on Titan. Or something... Bla bla bla...and there was a lot of that. I won't go further into the story, as that's not my thang. I will say this: The movie was WAAAAY too fucking long.(2h 05) OMG.  Bosa and I both agree that it could have easily been cut in half.  Especially since they tried to tie in love stories and such. It was far too serious a flick to be just a sci-fi gig. Don't get me wrong, it was beautiful...

New Oblivion trailer ups the thinking and explosions

The more I see of the new Tom Cruise sci-fi flick Oblivion, the more I'm convinced we're in for a real treat -- a smart, dazzling sci-fi adventure that'll thrill as much as it'll make us think. How cool is that? Very! This new trailer just cements my opinion. And it shows more of Oscar winner Melissa Leo and bad to the ass hottie/former Bond girl Olga Kurylenko . And Morgan Freeman who, at the mere mention of his name, makes my inner voice sound like Morgan Freeman. Oblivion follows Cruise’s Jack Harper as he works to repair security drones on a ravaged planet Earth following an alien invasion. When Jack defies orders by rescuing a familiar stranger from a crashed spaceship, he ignites a chain of events that exposes everything he’s been told about the invasion as a lie.  Watch your ass this new trailer, and prepare for Oblivion's release in theatres and IMAX on April 19.   Video: Oblivion - exclusive trailer Source:  MSN Related articles N...

Tom Cruise takes us to Oblivion with this new trailer

And I say fuck yes! Under the director of Tron Legacy's Joseph Kosinski, this post-apocalyptic sci-fi/action flick is full of great designs, big ideas and cool action. What more do you want from a potential blockbuster? Boobs? Well . . . yeah. A court martial sends a veteran soldier to a distant planet, where he has to destroy the remains of an alien race. The arrival of an unexpected traveler causes him to question what he knows about the planet, his mission, and himself. I truly dig what I see here. And it's got my man Morgan Freeman and fave tough chicks Zoe Bell and Olga Kurylenko. I am down with this mofo when it opens on April 19, 2013 . . . provided the Mayan apocalypse doesn't beat me to it. But give this trailer a watch, and decide for yourselves. Props to JoBlo.com for the preview.

The Countdown To Extinction Continues: Shawn reviews Deep Impact

Megadeth provided my article title and Deep Impact, with its Earth destroying asteroid, provides the entertainment. This is the little less known film, than the OTHER asteroid destroying movie, that came out in 1998. This one did NOT have Bruce Willis. But that's ok. It had Morgan Freeman as the president! I enjoy watching movies that destroy earth. It's comforting because, if they make it in movies, I can pretend it's "make believe". That way I don't have to have the guilt of hypothetically killing 7 billion of my fellow fucking humans. haha. This movie has been a staple in my video library since it came out. Not because it is astounding, but because I like the story, the build up, the discovery, and all the events leading to the cataclysmic event. Then it had enough of a budget to kill some cities, title wave, and successfully followed different views of survival and acceptance. This was when the race to release similar styled movies, was between ...

Micro Review: RED

Bruce Willis hasn't made a movie this much fun or action packed since he dusted off John McClane. Sure it's lightweight and fluffy, but it's also one of the best examples of pure entertainment Hollywood has produced in some time. If you're going to make a slick, glossy product, then make it fun. And give your superstar a talented supporting cast to work off of. Mary-Louise Parker, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren and especially John Malkovich are all a hoot to watch. The throwdown between Willis and Karl Urban is one for the books.A Good time at the movies for the wife and I, and we'll be watching it again.

Bruce Willis + Action + Comedy = So There!

Below is a link to the trailer for RED, the new action/comedy about a retired CIA agent who finds himself wearing a bullseye because of the secrets still in his head. The comic book series is supposed to be more straight espionage, but I never read it and, therefore, don't care if the movie changes the tone of the story. All I see is Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich and Helen Mirran kicking some ass and having some fun. I am so there come October. Check the trailer out at Yahoo!
