The Alan Trezza interview, Abominable and Mark of the Devil

We once again successfully navigated the Radio NL airwaves last night, which means it's time to reveal the podcast version of our latest broadcast From The Basement. That means we have even more of our interview with We Summon the Darkness screenwriter Alan Trezza! Like about six minutes more! He and Jay get into the film's origins -- which are steeped in 80s heavy metal and the satanic panic that came with it. And Alan touches on working with the legendary Joe Dante, who filmed Alan's first script, Burying the Ex. What 80s band does Alan consider the best metal band of all time? Stick with us! And stick with us you shall, as Jason and Shawn put the upcoming horror release Abominable on the chopping block. Does this monster movie -- which has little to no marketing or Internet presence -- warrant a watch? Or does the lack of hype speak for itself? We're not done yet, folks, as Jason and Shawn have many more streaming dos and don'ts for you, including a few...

Screenwriter Alan Trezza summons The Basement

Last week we reviewed the upcoming indie-horror/comedy We Summon the Darkness starring Alexandra Daddario and Johnny Knoxville. Have you heard the episode yet? Well, get on it ! Today I had the pleasure of chatting with the man who dreamed the movie up, screenwriter Alan Trezza! He also served as the film's executive producer, and broke into the business as the writer/producer of Burying the Ex, which was directed by genre great Joe Dante. That's a picture of Dante and Trezza above. Alan and I talked about where the idea for We Summon the Darkness came from, what it was like working with Daddario and, because it's a big part of the movie, we yapped about heavy metal too. Screenwriting is a tough job. Trust me, I've done it. So it was great speaking with a fellow writer about the business, and how he got this project off the ground. We had a great time, and I can't wait for Basement Dwellers to hear it. When, you ask? How about Friday, April 3, at 6:05 P....

The Andy Palmer interview and Camp Cold Brook

It's Saturday morning, those hangovers might be in full effect, and we've got the cure: the official podcast of last night's official broadcast From The Basement! And there's even more of our conversation with director and editor Andy Palmer. Andy directed The Funhouse Massacre and the recent horror release Camp Cold Brook, which comes from executive producer Joe Dante, and stars scream queen Danielle Harris. You heard about eight minutes of that chat last night, and we've got more of it on this podcast. What's it like working with a couple of legends like Dante and Harris, and how did Andy's background in reality TV help him make Camp Cold Brook? Stick with us! And stick around as Shawn caught up with Robert Downey Jr. in Dolittle, Jason played retro reviewer with Missing In Action and Witness, and Mike S got his Poirot on with Murder on the Orient Express. Toss in a bit of movie news, the weekend rundown, and some other junk, and you've got t...

Andy Palmer meets The Invisible Man at Camp Cold Brook

After three weeks of straight reviews, The Basement Boys return with a brand-new interview to entertain your ear holes, and you'll hear it when From The Basement storms the Radio NL 610 AM airwaves at 6:05 tonight! Jason interviewed director Andy Palmer, who made the new horror movie Camp Cold Brook. He talks about working with genre veterans Joe Dante and Danielle Harris, how the movie was made, and the importance of character. It's a great conversation listeners will enjoy. On the subject of horror; there's one new release in theatres this weekend, and it's a scary one. The Invisible Man. Does this new spin on the classic story embrace the #MeToo movement, and create a very real villain? Stick with us! And stick around for a new review from Mike S, the rest of the weekend rundown, and more. It's radio that's so awesome... well, you know the drill. Tune in via the 610 AM dial, or the player to your right, and enjoy.

Andy Palmer directs Camp Cold Brook to The Basement

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, the people we meet on this adventure From The Basement is one of the best things about the job. Today I interviewed Andy Palmer, the director of the new horror release Camp Cold Brook. Haven't seen it? Get on it! I reviewed it right here . Andy got his start in reality TV, and made the well-regarded horror/comedy The Funhouse Massacre. He's combined his talents in Camp Cold Brook, which is about a team of TV ghost hunters who investigate a summer camp where bad things happened. The flick is produced by genre icon Joe Dante, and stars scream queen Danielle Harris. We talk the making of Camp Cold Brook, and what it was like working with Dante and Harris. Andy is a fun guy to interview, and has a lot of energy. We had a good time, and I guarantee you'll enjoy listening. When, you ask? How about this Friday at about 6:05 in the P.M., and only on Radio NL 610 AM Kamloops! Stick with us!

Agramon's Gate, VFW and Camp Cold Brook

It's Saturday morning; time to shake off that hangover, grab your favourite blend, and tune in to the latest podcast... From The Basement! For those who didn't listen last night on the mighty Radio NL 610 AM Kamloops, and for the those who want to hear it again, we've got a slew of reviews for your ear holes this week. What's up first? The supernatural thriller Agramon's Gate from director Harley Wallen, and starring genre vets Lauren Landon and Yan Birch. Do qualified horror actors make for a good horror movie? Stick with us! Don't touch that dial; there's more! A lot more! Jason and Shawn take in -- and take down -- new genre releases VFW starring Stephen Lang, Fred Williamson and William Sadler, and the Joe Dante produced Camp Cold Brook. One's a loving ode to early John Carpenter, the other a nod to reality paranormal television. Are they worthy of the chopping block? Plus Mike S returns for another review, The Basement Boys provide the weeke...

Review: Camp Cold Brook

There was a point during my watch of Camp Cold Brook where I lost track of the time. You see, I'm usually pretty aware of where I'm at in a film's running time, and how much movie I've got left. The worse the movie, the more aware I am. But I paused Camp Cold Brook so I could grab a drink and realized I had a half hour left. The movie was almost over, and I wasn't ready for things to end. THAT is the sign of a good movie! Sure, there's nothing new or different about Camp Cold Brook. We've seen flicks about reality TV shows going into a haunted setting, only to become victims of the location before. But producer Joe Dante, director Andy Palmer and screenwriter Alex Carl went and did it better than most with a good story (for the type), likeable characters, and some moments of genuine suspense. If you don't have the money for lots of gore and special effects, and you're not looking to go the splatter/exploitation route, this is how you get it d...

Halloween Day By Day: Piranha (1978)

My only real childhood memory of Joe Dante's Piranha is the beautiful and spunky Heather Menzies distracting a soldier by ripping open her shirt and displaying her braless boobs to him. Hey, I was maybe eight at the time, and boobs were the tits, to coin a phrase. Still are really. Wanna fight about it? But that scene, which still plays well today (ahem) sums up the film perfectly. This movie is designed to be a non-pretentious schlockfest intent on being as entertaining as possible. Nothing more, nothing less.

Halloween star joins Joe Dante's Camp Cold Brook

Paranormal reality shows still seem to be all the rage these days, despite the genre peaking with Paranormal State almost a decade ago, and that show's demise now years behind us. However, it's still an interesting premise for a horror film. I mean, TV crew explores alleged creepy incident, alleged creepy incident turns out to be real, cue the screaming.

Basement Classics: The Hole and Airborne

Return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear as Jason and Shawn take a step back in time to a classic episode of We Came from the Basement! That's right, we'll be revisiting old episodes from the previous six seasons of our show, ones fans and us Basementites feared long gone. This week, we return to the eve of the Mayan apocalypse and our December 2012 episode featuring reviews of The Hole and Airborne. Or, as we said way back then:

Bates Motel star joins blackout thriller Dark

We haven't talked about Dark, an upcoming thriller executive produced by legendary director Joe Dante , for quite some time. But that doesn't mean things aren't happening on the project. The latest development is Bate Motel's Michael Eklund , along with Black Hawk Down star Brendan Sexton III , are on board for the psychological horror story, which takes place during the 2003 blackout that struck North America .

Alexandra Daddario sexys up this pic from Joe Dante's Burying the Ex

Joe Dante and horror/comedy go together like beer and pizza. Or beer and hot wings. Or even beer and bacon. Do you see a trend developing here? Mmmmm, beer.

Joe Dante produced thriller Dark 50 per cent crowd funded

We try to be as on-the-ball as we can here in The Basement, but once in a while things get by us. So, when the opportunity presents itself to tell you fine Basementites about a project we missed, we do. Good news for the makers of the upcoming thriller Dark --  the project's Kickstarter campaign hit the half way mark -- $25,000 of $50,000 raised -- after two weeks of crowdsourcing. I call that impressive. Know what's also impressive? The flick is produced by the legendary Joe Dante and written by Gut writer/director Elias. You all know Gut right? We talked about it during the last season of our show. Here's our thoughts . Dark is a wicked cool idea for a thriller: a disturbed young woman must confront her worst fears when she finds herself trapped alone in a New York City loft during the 2003 blackout. Dante and Elias have brought together a pretty good cast of hotties too. Whitney Able of Monsters fame plays Kate, the disturbed young woman, while Alexandra Brec...

Jason and Shawn review The Hole and Airborne

The Hole Jason: In many ways, The Hole is more of a tribute to 80s cinema than J.J. Abrams' Super 8. For one, it's directed by one of the finest purveyors of 80s movie making -- Joe Dante. You know, the guy who made Gremlins, Explorers, and Inner Space? Hell, when it comes to horror, this is the dude who made the original Howling and Piranha But is this movie any good? Yarp. The creepy kid and creepy doll sequences are beau-coup scary. Actually, this movie really took off for me when the ghost of the dead kid AND the creepy clown were introduced, almost simultaneously. Actually, every horror sequence in this movie works. Flawlessly. I admit, I'm a bit too old to fully enjoy The Hole. This would be a perfect flick for someone in his early to mid teens. Hell, even the jail bait that is Haley Bennett is cast strictly to entice young male viewers.  That said, my son will love this shit when he is old enough to fully appreciate it. And I know I will watch this a...

The Hole and Airborne

Just in time for the Mayan apocalypse comes the mid-season finale of Film Reviews from the Basement, the official radio show/podcast of We Came from the Basement. And how do we bring 2012 -- and potentially the world --  to an end? With the return of not one, but two, icons from Jason and Shawn's youth! First up is The Hole, directed by legendary 80s filmmaker Joe Dante. The same Joe Dante who made Gremlins, The Howling and the original Piranha. This time, Dante tackles a Nickelodeon nightmare about two brothers who discover a mysterious hole in their basement. Said hole then unleashes their inner nightmares . . . and Haley Bennett. Is The Hole any good? Stick with us! And stick around for the return of Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill, in the British thriller Airborne. Hamill plays an air traffic controller trying to save passengers on a transatlantic flight as they disappear one by one, much like his career. Then it's time to unleash the fury that is Jon Cross of t...

Joe Dante's The Hole to finally get a release

Remember Joe Dante? He's the cool dude who directed the classic Gremlins and the more recent . . . ish . . . Small Soldiers. Guess what? He's made another movie! Actually, Dante made it back in 2009 and, for whatever reason, The Hole has never seen the light of day. That is until now. Well almost now. OK, it opens next month! Big Air Studios and Bold Films will release the flick Sept. 28 up against Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Looper. Sucks to be The Hole. But, after sitting on a shelf for three years, no one involved with the project can complain. The Hole centres on a pair of brothers who stumble upon a mysterious hole in their basement that leads to the darkest corridors of their fears and nightmares. Haley Bennett, Teri Polo, Quinn Lord and Bruce Dern star. We've got the trailer below, and the film looks like it could be fun. We'll know soon enough!
