Veteran of the Star Wars: "Solo: A Star Wars Story" (2018)

It's time to jump into the cockpit of our Corellian freighter, and do the run to a galaxy far far away in under 12 parsecs... Han is a young man trying to find a way to escape a life of crime on a corrupt planet.  After a job gone wrong, the woman he loves is captured, and he's forced to join the Imperial Forces to escape. Soon, however, young Han Solo begins a journey to become the one thing he never wanted to be... the good guy... The story is actually quite good.  I loved that- as fitting the character, they went with a Western sort of tone.  The plot progressed smoothly, and fairly quickly.  I found there was a wonderful balance of humour, action, and drama that didn't feel forced, and felt very much in keeping with the general personalities of the characters involved.  While the movie started out slowly, it picked up speed, and I found myself fully engaged, and enjoying myself. " Solo: A Star Wars Story " did a great job of capturing the spirit o...

Review: Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)

Well, this is not "normal" for me: reviewing a second movie that's recently been in the theaters. Of course, this could be related to what Jay was discussing in his article about Studios closing the " Theatre-to-Digital Gap ".  I suggest reading that article by the way.  I rate it in " The Good ". But I'm here to review to " Solo: A Star Wars Story ".

Solo: A Fanboy's Story

No, this isn't a review, as that ship clearly sailed back in May. But I did finally watch Solo: A Star Wars Story, a movie I was in no hurry to see. Given the film's "poor" (I use "" as it's hard to imagine a film that made more than $200 million domestic being considered a failure) box-office performance, I guess a lot of people were in the same space about Solo as I was.

Jason verus Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Thirty two years is a long time wait between Star Wars movies. Sure, there're the prequels, but really. Do they count? Not to me. For me, the Star Wars saga went on hiatus in 1983 and didn't pick up until just a few short weeks ago. Thirty two years. A long wait. Was it worth it? Stick with me!

Back to Back to Frank Black, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and The X-Files revival

It's a packed house in terms of people and content this episode as Jason, Shawn and Amy welcome back Troy Foreman and James McLean of the Back to Frank Black campaign, which aims to revive, in some form, Chris Carter's 90s TV series Millennium. Naturally, The Basement Dwellers discuss that series, which starred the great Lance Henriksen, and where the campaign is at in terms of bringing the series and its hero, Frank Black, back. But the conversation quickly turns to a little movie that's quietly slipped into theatres this weekend -- Star Wars: The Force Awakens -- and the impact the Star Wars saga has had on popular culture. Plus James's theory that Luke is a douche. Plus, Troy and James have a few words to say about the revival of Chris Carter's uber popular series The X-Files, which hits TV screens next month. Things also take a political turn as The Basement dives into politics, and opinions are voiced about U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump. ...

Shawn and Anthony Michael Bosa versus Star Wars: The Force Awakens

The most anticipated movie of all time is here, and Shawn and sometime Basement contributor Anthony Michael Bosa have seen it. That's right, we're talkin' Star Wars: The Force Awakens!

Star Wars: The Force Awakens gets a trailer

Today, I introduced my almost four-year-old boy to the original Star Wars. Not the special edition shit either, but the real deal. The 1977 version. The one, true Star Wars. He loved it. A bit scary in parts, but he couldn't stop watching. Dad achievement unlocked. Also today, the new trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens hit the world, and there was much rejoicing. This trailer gives me chills. Watching it was almost as cool as watching the original version with my boy earlier.

Peter Mayhew will play Chewbacca in new Star Wars

Insert Wookie cry of joy here as word hits The Basement that Peter Mayhew will once again suit up as Chewbacca in J.J. Abrams new Star Wars movie . Granted, no official casting has been announced, but The Hollywood Reporter ran a story today saying Mayhew is on board for Episode VII .

Han Solo and Sherlock talk Star Wars Episode VII

Well, Harrison Ford and Benedict Cumberbatch talk Star Wars Episode VII on the very British talk show The Graham Norton Show , which I've never seen and would like to now. Obviously, with Ford on the show and Cumberbatch having recently worked with director JJ Abrams on Star Trek Into Darkness , the topic of the new Star Wars comes up. How these two great actors deal with Norton's questions is amazing. We learn nothing, and it doesn't matter. This is an awesome couple of minutes. See for yourselves. Happy Thanksgiving, y'all. Harrison Ford on for Blade Runner 2?

First he returned as Indiana Jones , then word had it he was back as Han Solo , and now the rumour mill suggests Harrison Ford could return as Deckard for the Blade Runner sequel . "Uh, yeah, we've been chatting about it," Ford said when IGN asked him point blank about the possibility. I'm not sure I'm down with a Blade Runner sequel to begin with. Seems like an odd choice some 30 years after initial release. But Ridley Scott wants to do it, so who knows. His involvement gives me faith. The fact Green Lantern screenwriter Michael Green is rewriting the script -- which no one knows anything about -- does not. I'm not even sure what more they could do with the story. The original wrapped itself up nicely. From here on in, it's wait and see. I, for one, only mildly enjoyed Blade Runner but do like to revisit it from time to time. As for Ford, he's the man. Maybe now that he's in his 70s he's looking to give all his classic characte...

Ender's Game trailer has space combat and Harrison Ford

Having never read Orson Scott Card 's sci-fi tale about kids fighting an alien race , I wasn't that excited for the big screen adaptation of Ender's Game . But writer/director Gavin Hood has acquired himself a pretty heavy cast that includes such screen legends as Harrison Ford and Ben Kingsley . Yeah, Ford is starting to look and sound old, but he's still Han Solo , Indiana Jones and Blade Runner , whether he's got over it or not! Seventy years after a horrific alien war, an unusually gifted child is sent to an advanced military school in space to prepare for a future invasion.  This looks pretty dark for a movie featuring kids as the protagonists. And slick too, with lots of sci-fi action and adventure. My wife has read the books and says the series is more than just space opera. If Hood and company can bring out the layers of Card's story, this could be more than another tween franchise wannabe. Check out the trailer for yourself. Ender'...

The Basement joins the Alliance

No, not the rebel alliance . The Horror Blogger Alliance. Much cooler really. And we don't have to put up with that whiny bitch Luke Skywalker . In all seriousness, we're pretty damn excited to be a sponsor of the HBA. Not only does the alliance's main dude, Jeremy , seem like a genuinely cool guy, but he loves horror dammit! And loving horror is a very good thing. Here's what the HBA is all about, in their own words: Welcome to the Horror Blogger Alliance , a site dedicated to the individuals that pour their tireless effort, heart, and soul in to writing about the genre they love: Horror. It is always important to recognize the hard work that every person contributes to the online blogging community, and every single person deserves the right to be read. As such, this Alliance is an open-admission organization that will hopefully be used to promote new and existing blogs and bloggers, and help introduce the community to a wide variety of dif...

Harrison Ford "open" to playing Han Solo again?

So says Entertainment Weekly reporter Geoff Boucher, who claims he has a source close to him saying Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher are all "upbeat" about returning to the Star War franchise now that Disney has bought Lucasfilm and set a 2015 date for Episode VII's release. I can understand Hamill and Fisher being up for a return trip to that galaxy far, far away. But Ford, who has never had a kind word for any of the Star Wars scripts, strikes me as someone who could care less about the franchise. And this is an unconfirmed source coming in early on what is surely the tip of the tsunami of Star Wars rumours now that a film is in pre-production. Where gonna hear a lot more of these in the years leading up to the new film. But . . . how cool would it be to have Ford back in saddle as Solo, if only as a guest appearance? Very fucking cool. Ditto Fisher and Hamill when you come to think of it. I guess we'll all just have to stay tuned. PS: Lucas won't...
