OK, I know you're not supposed to talk like this given our political climate, but I don't care. My sexual orientation is as straight as an arrow (not ashamed to admit it), I'm attracted to strong, independent women, and I admire the female form very much. So I was drawn to the new(ish) action movie The Courier because it stars former Bond girl Olga Kurylenko, who is not only one of the most beautiful women on the planet, but one of the few women on screen who I legitimately believe could kick anyone's ass. It's the way she carries herself, the raw confidence she has. I've seen her throw down in a few films, and I believe it. And yes, on The Courier's poster she's dressed in form fitting biker leather. I noticed that too. So right away, I'm hooked. Then I read Gary Oldman -- arguably one of the best actors of all time -- plays the main villain. Sold! The Courier is a cheesy, B-grade action movie. But it's one of the best cheesy, B-grade ...

In this cooped up time, I was in the mood for a classic, gothic horror story. I somewhat got that in Bram Stoker's Dracula. It's an interesting mixed bag, this film; trying so hard to be this sweeping horror epic, while not quite hitting the mark. It certainly looks the part, with its surreal, dream-like cinematography. While a bit over-the-top at times, it paints a very vivid view of this world. However, as pretty as it looks, I felt detached from the story. It felt like the plot was an after thought; that we were coasting through each scene to get to the next big image or set piece. It felt more like the writer was checking off boxers rather than telling an organic story. The acting here is also mixed. On the one hand, you have Gary Oldman and Anthony Hopkins, bringing their characters to life and selling them at 110 per cent. On the other, you have a young Keanu Reeves acting on par with a cardboard cut out. To summarize: I'm a little underwhelmed with 1992...

Netflix has created a nice niche for itself as a purveyor of B-grade genre flicks, and we in The Basement applaud the move, as that's our bread and butter here. Some are better than others. Spectral was decent, The Open House not so much. A couple of weeks back they unleashed Tau, featuring the voice of Gary Oldman and It Follows and The Guest starlet Maika Monroe in a one-location sci-fi thriller about a kidnapped woman and a deadly AI.

We're less than a month away from the release of the RoboCop reboot, and I'm still primed to see it. Sure, this isn't the RoboCop I grew up with. And, as Suzanne Cappelletti pointed out, the black suit does make him look kinda like a rejected Cylon. But this still looks like a decent bit of Hollywood escapism. Would I have been happier with an R-rated RoboCop? Yes. But this is 2014. That just doesn't happen.

One of the best things about the original RoboCop were the newscasts and fake TV ads scattered through the movie. With this PSA warning against drunk driving, it looks like the studio behind the remake is going after that same vibe . . . while cramming in some new footage at the same time. Although not as awesome as those commercials in the original, this is still a neat and timely idea. I'll give them props for that. Aside from the fact the world hasn't screamed for a RoboCop remake, nor does it need one, this trailer isn't half bad. Not at all. For one, Jose Padilha 's flick brings enough new cards to the table that remaking a 26-year-old movie almost feels justified. And I dig the cast, including Michael Keaton , Gary Oldman and Samuel L. Jackson . As for Alex Murphy /RoboCop, I'm curious to see what The Killing 's Joel Kinnaman brings to the table. I certainly got me some goosebumps when he uttered that classic line, "Dead or alive, you're coming with me." And yeah, the new suits looks better in motion, but can't hold a candle to the original. Judge for yourselves, and sound off: When Alex Murphy -- a loving husband, father and good cop -- is critically injured in the line of duty, the multinational conglomerate OmniCorp sees their chance for a part-man, part-robot police officer. Basement contributor Matt Bellamy has taken it upon himself to watch and review at least one horror movie a day for the month of October . . . because he's awesome that way! And he's kicking things off right with a look at Francis Ford Coppola's 1992 version of Bram Stoker's Dracula.   A gothic horror masterpiece from Francis Ford Coppola, starring Anthony Hopkins, Winona Ryder, Gary Oldman and KEANU REEVES! His "attempt" at a British accent alone is worth a viewing, very comical, but this movie is extremely entertaining and stylishly directed, also containing a terrifically creepy performance from Gary Oldman as the Count himself. A great flick to kick things off!

I know we said we're not posting news on mainstream movies anymore, but we're all about fulfilling fan requests here in The Basement. So when the fans say they want us to post the teaser for the much anticipated The Dark Knight Rises, we do it! The teaser is mostly old footage mixed in with some new. Hey, the movie has just started shooting for it's release next July, let's give Christopher Nolan and company a break. But we get a quick look at Tom Hardy as Bane and a sickly Jim Gordan. It's gonna be later this year/early next before the footage really starts cooking with gas. And we're pretty sure it's gonna be awesome! Nothing yet on what The Dark Knight Rises is actually about, but do we really care? Nolan had us at Batman Begins. Enjoy the teaser folks:

One part religious parable, one part apocalyptic action movie, The Book of Eli has something thoughtful to say and was designed to make you think about what it is saying. Whether or not you buy into the message will determine how much you like it. Even those who don't should enjoy the action elements of the film. These sequences are extremely well crafted. In fact, the whole movie is shot with style, and the story has enough thrills and dark humor to justify a two-hour trip into the desolate landscape. The performances, led by the always capable Denzel Washington and Gary Oldman, are all first rate. A Good review from The Basement for me.
