Elizabeth Banks to direct and star in Invisible Woman

Despite the quick and painful death of the cinematic Dark Universe, Universal Studios is determined to revitalize its classic monsters for modern cinema, and they're bringing Elizabeth Banks in to help. Yes, she's the one who blamed men for the bomb that is Charlie's Angels. And she's putting the whole men-won't-watch-a-movie-with-a-strong-female-lead thing to the test once again by directing and starring in Invisible Woman. This is, of course, a new take on the 1940's film of the same name. That movie was about an attractive model, with an ulterior motive, who volunteers to be a guinea pig for a science experiment. I'd like to point out Leigh Whannell's The Invisible man, which we highlighted right here , looks to feature a strong female lead in the form (not a sexual reference) of Elisabeth Moss. This new Invisible Woman is penned by Erin Cressida Wilson. No word yet on when we'll see it. In the meantime, Whannell's The Inv...

Halloween Day by Day: "Brightburn" (2019)

Superhero movies have become a huge part of the movie industry over the past eleven years.  Horror has also gained a bit more "respectability" within the movie industry as well.  It was only natural- and a matter of time before someone put the two together... An alien spacecraft crash lands on a small farm.  The Beyers find within it a survivor... a baby.  As the boy reaches his teen years, he starts to exhibit strange powers, and the Beyers begin to wonder: Will this child from the stars become Earth's savior...? I can't say enough positive things about 2019's " Brightburn " by James Gunn, Kenneth Huang, and David Yarovesky.  The idea of a "dark" Superman story has been done often enough before by DC Comics in their Elseworlds comics, but this movie takes it to a new level, and makes it much more visceral and fascinating to watch.  The progression of the story is natural and quite believable- pulling you along willingly.  The pacing i...

Stewart, Scott and Balinska suit up in new Charlie's Angels trailer

Because Hollywood is totally bankrupt of new ideas, and people have a very short attention span, there's a new Charlie's Angels movie headed our way in November. And it's not a sequel to McG's early 2000s stab at the franchise. This time we get Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska as the Angels, with Elizabeth Banks, Patrick Stewart and Djimon Hounsou as Bosley (Don't ask. I didn't). Banks is also the director on this one.

Catching up with... Brightburn

Catching up with... is a new feature here in The Basement where we catch up with the flicks we missed during their first run, but still want to sound off on. Flicks like the James Gunn produced Brightburn, which Shawn and I were uber excited about, but didn't get to see when it hit theatres back in May. But we've watched it now, and man-o-dynamite are we ever glad we did!

Elizabeth Banks takes on the Power Rangers

I've only caught a handful of Power Rangers episodes in my day, and that's because of the hotness that was/is Pink Ranger Amy Jo Johnson. Otherwise, it isn't my cup of tea. This from a g guy who grew up with the Toho Godzilla movies. Hey, giant lizards are greater than big robots. Truth.
