It's becoming increasingly difficult to find original movies these days. One not based on a comic book, novel, TV show, or that aren't a reboot, remake or sequel (or prequel). Thank Jebus then for Quentin Tarantino! Today marks the release of his 9th film, and it's called Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. So guess what Jason and Howie are talking about when From The Basement storms the Radio NL 610 AM Morning News at 8:40 this morning?

I love tanks, I love war movies , and I'm a fan of Brad Pitt . That makes the superstar's upcoming Second World War action/drama Fury a must see for this Basementite. We'll forgive the presence of Shia LeBeouf of course.

I have a big problem in that I generally read the novel version of movies before I watch the movie. Being a lover of all things zombies, of course I had to read World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks before I watched World War Z , starring Mr. Brad Jolie Pitt. If I could, I would just say that the movie sucked, and then I’d drop the mike and walk off stage. But instead, I’ll stay on this glorious internet podium and elaborate just a little more…

Right off the bat, it must be acknowledged that Se7en is one of my Top 5 favourite movies. Which pretty much negates the need to write anything further. But this is my site (and Shawn 's of course) and I'll do whatever the fuck I want. Wanna fight about it? No? Good. Two detectives, a rookie and a veteran, hunt a serial killer who uses the seven deadly sins as his modus operandi.

Basement contributor Matt Bellamy has taken it upon himself to watch and review at least one horror movie a day for the month of October . . . because he's awesome that way! Tonight, Bellamy sets aside his book-versus- movie bias and tackles War and Peace . . . I mean War and Zombies . . . I mean . . . What we have here is a zombie movie made for people who don't like zombies, that's about the best possible way I can sum it up. Don't like the slow moving, shambling walking dead? Not a fan of bloo d and gore? Would prefer pulse pounding action to being scared? This is the movie for you! What a slap in the face to people who love zombies and the horror genre in general and I find this to be a particularly offensive film given how strong the source material is. Jason: I'm pretty much done with zombies. Hollywood has taken yet another craze and beaten it to death with a severed limb. Zombies are popular. It's time to move on. But, and this is a heavy but, Hollywood did right by me with World War Z. We've done the small-band-of-survivors thing to death. Time to go big and go global. Give us a spectacle. That's what Hollywood does well, and they nailed it with World War Z. This is more of a virus movie where the virus happens to be zombies. I'm cool with that. We get to see swarms -- literally swarms -- of the living dead assault apartment buildings, cities and even unleashed on an airplane in flight. I loved that. Then shit gets toned down for the final act. Nice! No real blood or gore? Fine. I've got my indie flicks for that, and few indie flicks could go as epic as World War Z does. December 21, 2012 is fast approaching. With the end of the world forecast, in just one month's time, I decided to revisit an old "end times" flick. 12 Monkeys. A "volunteer" prisoner is sent back in time, to discover the cause of an apocalyptic plague, that killed over 5 Billion people. Bruce Willis gives his usual commanding performance, however, not as the sturdy, steadfast hero. More unsure of himself, than most of us, on a bad day.  It was slightly unsettling. Obviously, being a revisit, this rates a Good in my books. (I don't actually own a book) I forgot Brad Pitt was in this.  Dude blew my mind with his performance.  I actually forgot it was Brad, that was the crazy dude, it's been that long!  If you haven't seen this one, I recommend it.  I think, until the Mayan calendar end, I may take in a disaster movie a day. 

A couple of days ago we showed you an Entertainment *spits* Tonight teaser for the World War Z trailer. Now we have the preview itself, by way of those awesome dudes at JoBlo.com. My feelings toward the movie haven't really changed now that I've seen more footage. I'm kinda "meh" toward it. Maybe it's because I'm not used to big-budget horror movies like this. Maybe it's because most big-budget horror movies suck. I don't know. I dig Pitt, so his presence doesn't worry me at all. And some of the sequences with the swarms of fast-moving zombies are creepy. So I guess I'm 50-50 on this one. We will all be able to pass judgement when World War Z hits June 21, 2013. Marc Forster directs the film, which stars Pitt as a U.N. employee racing against time as he travels the world trying to stop the outbreak of a deadly zombie pandemic. Watch the trailer, and let us know what you think.

By way of Entertainment Tonight that is. You know, one of those we've-got-an-exclusive-look-at-Brad-Pitt-fighting-zombies-coming-at-you-in-three-days promotional blurbs delivered in that annoying way that only Entertainment Tonight can do it. But still, it's a few seconds of footage for a movie that has taken for fucking ever to get made and will likely suck balls once it comes out on June 21st, 2013. I hope it doesn't, but it probably will. Because I have no faith in Hollywood. The trailer hits Friday, so I'll reserve full judgement on the footage until then. As of right now, I'm indifferent. Horror and zombie fans should be familiar with the novel World War Z: An Oral History of Zombie War. Max Brooks's post apocalyptic tale is an account of a great war between humans and zombies told through a collection of first-person accounts. It was a best seller, a big hit among some of us Basement Dwellers and guess what . . . a movie version is coming! The film is currently shooting in Malta with a budget of $125 million. This is no low-budget effort, but the scope of the book demands that. Marc Foster is directing from a script by comic/screenwriter J. Michael Straczynski and Michael Carnahan.Brad Pitt stars as protagonist Gerry Lane. Check out a couple of the images below, which show Pitt in scenes taking place in Israel. World War Z hits theatres some time next year.
