Catching up with... Underwater

OK, it was obvious from previews that Underwater was intended to be nothing more than an aquatic rip off of Alien... from the same studio that made Alien. Everything, right down to the set design, drove that point home. Which is fine, as there hasn't been a good water-bound Alien clone since the late 80s or early 90s, and even those were made with mixed success. William Eubank's attempt is nothing more than that -- an attempt. He's directed a visually impressive movie with Underwater, and manages to create some tension and thrills, but overall, the film doesn't really take off. He dives (pun intended) right into the action, with the crew of an underwater drilling operation fighting for their lives after the structure is compromised by some... thing. The survivors must figure out how to get to the surface, but discover the odds are against them as they're hunted by deep-sea monsters. I'm not a Kristen Stewart fan, but she does pretty good work here. In fa...

Mike S's Top Five Horror Movie Posters

One of the things that attracts us to a movie- besides the trailers, is the movie posters.  They have to be eye catching, and able to hint at what the story's about without spoiling it.  They have to make you curious, and want to plunk down your cash to sit in a theatre seat and watch the movie. So, with that in mind, I'm going to present my Top Five Horror Movie Posters:

Retro Review: Creature (1985)

Some time between Alien (1979) and its sequel Aliens (1986) someone got the great idea to rip off the first film and call it Creature. That year was 1985, and the movie is called... well... Creature. In the best tradition of rip offs, Creature doesn't do much more with the concept of astronauts discovering something horrible on a distant planet, in this case Titan, Saturn's largest moon. And that something horrible starts killing and, we assume, eating them.

Alien invasion flick Fighting the Sky attacks in February

Shawn and I dig us some alien-themed movies. Be they about aliens attacking a spaceship crew, or blowing up the White House, we're instantly on board. There's no shortage of these flicks out there, but most are direct to digital and lack a budget and scope. So colour me surprised when a trailer and poster for the upcoming Fighting the Sky appeared in our inbox, and offered something a little . . . bigger.

Life Vs. Alien: Covenant - The Alien Showdown

There were two big alien-themed releases this year. One was the latest chapter in a much-revered franchise, the other a start-studded, science-based work of original sci-fi. On this episode, Jason, Shawn, Amy and special guest Nathan Bosa tackle Life and Alien: Covenant, and determine which is best.

Alien: is it horror, sci-fi or both?

Contributor Suzanne Cappelletti returns to The Basement with a cinematic dilemma of sorts, one that movie fans and genre geeks have agonized over for years: just what kind of a movie is Alien? Don't know what I'm talking about? Read on:

Q&A: Tracey Birdsall

Actress Tracey Birdsall, currently decked out like Ellen Ripley on the set of a new science-fiction film called Robot Armageddon , offered us an update on that film, as well as some of her other upcoming projects including the rather saucy-sounding Who’s Jenna Jameson?

Alien: Isolation haunts gamers in October

Here's one Game Time with Greg is going to be all over . . . and the rest of The Basement crew too for that matter. Alien : Isolation is a direct sequel to Ridley Scott 's genre classic, Alien, and promises to make the titular beast scary again. It's not going to do it on the big screen either. Oh no, this is a survival horror video game .

The Dark Skies trailer promises alien horrors

It's been a long time since there's been a good alien-themed horror movie. And I don't mean the Alien franchise either. The last decent entry was probably Signs, and that's going back a decade or so. Along comes Dark Skies, the latest offering from Dimension Films. And it actually looks pretty damn creepy, blending elements of Insidious and Paranormal Activity, sans the found *spits* footage. Makes sense given that it's produced by the people responsible for those movies. Keri Russell and Josh Hamilton star as a suburban couple who find their family targeted by an unseen alien presence. Dark Skies is written and directed by Scott Charles Stewart, who made Legion and Priest. Take from that what you will (for the record, I dug Legion). Dark Skies hits theatres Feb. 22, 2013. Kudos to Arrow in the Head for the news.

Anthony Michael Bosa reviews Prometheus

You remember frequent Basement guest Anthony Michael Bosa? Of course you do! Guess what? He's seen Prometheus, and has been agreeable enough to share his thoughts! Read on! If you go into this movie in any way expecting to see ALIENS you will be extremely disappointed. You need to go in and expect to see a movie based in the same universe as the ALIEN films. Once you can accomplish this you will enjoy what you are watching. This movie gives you glimpses of how the Alien came about and it's ability to destroy worlds. You will also see how other beings try to mess with biological warfare and it never turns out well for anyone. Characters are OK. Enemies are OK. The SPACE JOCKEY, now called, "ENGINEERS" are pretty bad ass. The big question is, if you plan to go into space and find human kinds beginning, wouldn't you bring some bad ass soldiers along with you? Wouldn't you bring a spaceship with some awesome firepower? I mean, even Kirk brought re...

All about Prometheus . . . the spaceship that is

Because there isn't already enough anticipation for Ridley Scott's return to the sci-fi franchise Alien, we've got this handy little featurette from the new film Prometheus, due out June 8. This two-minute video details the design and construction of the spaceship at the centre of the film, the Prometheus itself. There's interviews with the cast, which includes Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace and Chalize Theron, Scott and the production designer. It's interesting stuff if you're a hardcore movie nerd like me. Prometheus follows a team of explorers who discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race. Enjoy the video!

First clip from Prometheus lands in The Basement

Alright, dammit! Just open already. I'm tired of posting teasers for trailers, teaser trailers, trailers, pictures and clips for Ridley Scott's (hopefully) triumphant return to sci-fi and the Alien franchise. But I'm not tired of watching shit from Prometheus, I just want to see the movie. It looks boss, and the latest clip -- which does nothing more than show a ship land on a planet -- just makes me want to see it more. June 8, get your ass over here! Prometheus stars Noomi Rapace, Idris Elba , Michael Fassbender and Charlize Theron in the story of a group of space explorers who set out to discover the origins of mankind . What they find shares DNA with Scott's Alien, and then some. Now watch the clip!

Latest Prometheus trailer will rock your universe

We've teased Ridley Scott's return to the Alien franchise a shit load already on the site, but when a new piece of news lands, we gotta push it. Because that's how we roll. Below is the new international trailer for the film, which hits North American theatres on June 8. I don't know what more we can say that hasn't already been said, other than we need to see this. It looks like five kinds of awesome, and this latest trailer just cements that. Prometheus stars Noomi Rapace, Idris Elba, Michael Fassbender and Charlize Theron in the story of a group of space explorers who set out to discover the origins of mankind. Now watch this bitch and enjoy!

Because we can, the Prometheus trailer

We're pretty much last to the party when it comes to giving the full preview for Ridley Scott's Prometheus play. But we've pimped the film quite a bit on the site, and it only seems wrong not to, so we are. So there! Scott claims his latest film "shares DNA" with his original sci-fi blockbuster Alien. If you pay close attention to this trailer, the parallels sure look far stronger than what the director is alluding too. And I say good! Prometheus stars Noomi Rapace, Idris Elba, Michael Fassbender and Charlize Theron in the story of a group of space explorers who set out to discover the origins of mankind. Big shit happens instead. This looks awesome, IMO. And it could be a contender for one of the biggest films of the year. We'll know for sure when Prometheus lands in theatres June 8.

Altered: Micro Review

Altered is a 2006 sci fi flick from the director of the Blair Witch Project. Yeah, I thought the same thing too.  More shaky cam stuff, low budget etc and so forth. This movie is NOT what you think. I had seen this movie popping up in my recommended row on Netflix. I kept skipping it because of the director and my physical queasiness that I suffered from Blair Witch.  Also, because I thought it would be plain, cheesy.  Even after Jay recommended it, I was still skeptical. I can't believe that I waited.  All I have to say is, "WOW". This movie had a very cool vibe from the get go.  It starts out with a bunch of  "good ole boys", hunting something. That something turns out to be an alien, from the species that altered their lives, some 15 years prior. They capture it and take it to their ultra secure location.  Do they kill it?  The answer to that question, is another question:  "What happens to an animal when it kills a human?"...

The Prometheus trailer promises Alien greatness

Wow! Just had my socks knocked off by the official trailer for Prometheus, Ridley Scott's return to sci-fi and the Alien franchise (sorta). We premiered the trailer's teaser a few days back. The result was a bit meh, but this . . . this delivers. Not only does it hint at the genre classic Scott created back in 1979, but it promises a big, sprawling sci-fi epic the likes of which we haven't seen in a long time. And love, love, LOVE the way the title is brought in. Again, nice nod to the Alien series. The official word from 20th Century Fox? Pleasure your eye holes with this: Visionary filmmaker Ridley Scott returns to the genre he helped define, creating an original science fiction epic set in the most dangerous corners of the universe. The film takes a team of scientists and explorers on a thrilling journey that will test their physical and mental limits and strand them on a distant world, where they will discover the answers to our most profound que...

The Prometheus pre-trailer

That's right, it's the trailer for a trailer. Or should I say the teaser for the teaser trailer? I'm not sure. Actually, I think I just burst something in my brain. Regardless, we've got a little bit of nifty promotional material from 20th Century Fox counting down to the preview of director Ridley Scott's return to sci-fi and the franchise he created back in the 70s -- Alien. Well, kinda sorta. Prometheus is described as being more Alien related than a prequel to the series. The video below is only a half minute long and doesn't show much beyond quick images of footage and behind-the-scenes material. But it works. I gotta see me that trailer come Thursday! Prometheus stars Charlize Theron, Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender. Look for it in theatres on June 8th. The plot is still being kept under wraps.

The Month of Horror Day 4: Alien

Basement contributor Matt Bellamy has taken it upon himself to watch and review at least one horror movie a day for the month of October . . . because he's awesome that way! And, with his fourth entry, he reminds us that in space no one can hear you scream! 'Cause there's no air and if you try you'll explode. There is definitely something eerie about the thought of something, somewhere lurking in the darkness and "in space, no one can hear you scream" is probably one of the most unsettling horror tag lines of all time. Before James Cameron came along and pumped it up with action and testosterone, Ridley Scott started it all off as a terrifying example of what goes bump in the night, or space. I rarely revisit this movie because it actually does frighten me, growing up I was always terrified of the alien creature and constantly imagined it was waiting for me in the darkness but I'm all grown up now and can handle it! Right? This is one of the true...

Poster Alert: Super 8

The much anticipated film is just days away from arriving in theatres so it's only fitting we provide a look at the latest poster for J.J. Abrams's Super 8. The film looks to be a loving throwback to Steven Spielberg's earlier films and this sweet poster captures that vibe perfectly. I miss the old-school, hand-drawn posters. It's great to see a studio take a shot at one of these again. In case you've lived in a cave for the past year, the plot for Super 8 is as follows: “In the summer of 1979, a group of friends in a small Ohio town witness a catastrophic train crash while making a super 8 movie and soon suspect that it was not an accident. Shortly after, unusual disappearances and inexplicable events begin to take place in town, and the local Deputy tries to uncover the truth – something more terrifying than any of them could have imagined.” Written and directed by Abrams and produced by Spielberg, Super 8 lands in theatres on Friday. Enjoy the poster b...

Alien space jockey to return in Prometheus

We haven't given a lot of love to Ridley Scott's Alien prequel project in the past but, when news broke that Prometheus has been transitioned into more of a stand-alone film than a direct prequel, we figured it was time for an update. Word has filtered online that some elements of the popular franchise Scott started back in the 1970s will return, including the space jockey. Who is the space jockey? He/it is the mysterious skeleton that appeared in the opening scenes of Alien. See the pic below for reference. Apparently the character is being designed as an eight-foot animatronic puppet in favour of CGI. That's cool. The script also includes a giant semi-human head that pilots a spaceship. Take from that what you will. Prometheus stars Charlize Theron, Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender. Look for it in theatres on June 8th, 2012. We have no idea what the film is actually about.
