Today I had the pleasure of chatting with the man who dreamed the movie up, screenwriter Alan Trezza! He also served as the film's executive producer, and broke into the business as the writer/producer of Burying the Ex, which was directed by genre great Joe Dante. We Summon the Darkness is a role-reversal horror/comedy that turns men into victims, and women into the victimizers, and does so with a wink and nudge... and a lot of blood, beer and heavy metal music. Some males might have a problem with this, but I didn't. If you're going to be victimized by a gang of "satanic" women you could do far worse than the lovely trio of Alexandra Daddario, Maddie Hasson and Amy Forsyth decked out in leather, jeans and other 80s metal aesthetics. We first told you about Alexandra Daddario's upcoming horror romp We Summon the Darkness last summer , and now we've received the good word from Saban Films that Marc Meyer's flick is finally hitting screens next month. On the way to a heavy metal concert, Alexis (Daddario) and two friends hear a news report of a local murder believed to be tied to a series of satanic killers. After the show, the girls invite three guys to join them at the estate owned by Alexis's father, a fire-and-brimstone preacher (Johnny Knoxville). What starts as a party suddenly turns dark and deadly... Daddario and Knoxville are joined by Keean Johnson (Midway), Maddie Hasson (Impulse), Logan Miller (Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse) and Amy Forsyth (Hell Fest). I have a thing for Alexandra Daddario. And if you have to ask why, then you just don't understand... not at all. Yes, she is extremely good looking. There. I said it. But she's an amazing actor as well, and versatile too. She's been a horror hero in Texas Chainsaw 3D, and did fine work in the first season of HBO's True Detective. She was also the bomb in San Andreas. Seriously. She's been tackling a lot of horror roles lately, and her latest sounds pretty interesting. Daddario will play a flight attendant in Zak Hilditch's Airborne, which is about a virus unleashed on an international flight. Her character is tasked with containing the virus before it overtakes the aircraft. Sounds interesting, and Hilditch has done fine work on Netflix with 1922 and Rattlesnake. Alexandra Daddario is no stranger to genre films, having survived Leatherface in Texas Chainsaw 3D and a giant earthquake in San Andreas. But can she survive a group of Satanists? Her new flick, We Summon the Darkness, was just acquired by Saban Films for a December theatrical and VOD release, and it sounds like it holds some promise. In the film, Daddario and two friends embark on a road trip to a heavy metal concert. Naive, they end up bonding with three seemingly friendly guys, and end up at an afterparty. Naturally, what should be a night of fun takes a dark and deadly turn... because that's what happens in these movies. No, I haven't paid a lot of attention to the upcoming Baywatch movie before now. Yes, I am paying attention today because Dwayne Johnson posted a pic of himself and Alexandra Daddario from the flick's set. I'm a guy.  It's Alexandra Daddario. Sue me. But yes, there is a Baywatch movie coming out next summer that riffs on the uber popular 1990s lifeguard TV series. And it does star Dwayne Johnson as Mitch Bucchanon, who some guy named David Hasselhoff portrayed on the show.

It's a rare event when my wife tells me I'm not allowed to watch a movie without her, but San Andreas was one of those events. So, when a Blu-ray screener crossed The Basement's path, we had a disaster date night perfectly lined up. Was The Rock's latest up to snuff for this carnage prone couple? Stick with me! First off, San Andreas is no Mad Max: Fury Road or Skyfall. It's not a classic by any stretch of the imagination. But it's a pleasant enough diversion, offering the sort of large scale destruction and spectacle Hollywood excels at. Shit gets smashed good in San Andreas, and it's nice to look at.

Joe Dante and horror/comedy go together like beer and pizza. Or beer and hot wings. Or even beer and bacon. Do you see a trend developing here? Mmmmm, beer.

We interrupt your holiday cheer for a few moments of pure terror. At least that's what the makers of Texas Chainsaw 3D promise when the film is released Jan. 4. With that date fast approaching, we present for you the below TV spot and clip from the film. You know, 'cause film marketing doesn't take a vacation. And neither do we, as it turns out. The latest Chainsaw tells the story of a young woman (Alexandra Daddario) who travels to Texas to collect an inheritance. Little does she know that an encounter with a chainsaw-wielding killer is part of the reward. This movie could be fun or it could suck. I've avoided posting anything on the Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboot because I generally hate the idea of rebooting anything, especially a horror franchise that already had a reboot 10 short years ago. How many times I can write reboot in a sentence? More than once is too much. Now we've got a trailer for the upcoming Texas Chainsaw 3D, which means we're not only getting an unwanted remake, but one that'll cost us three extra dollar to watch. Suck squared. At least the cast is pretty. We've got Alexandra Daddario once again playing a horror victim (she was stalked before in Bereavement). And she's backed up nicely by Tania Raymonde. And yeah, Leatherface and his chainsaw are back. I've never understood the appeal of these movie as they're far from my favourite horror franchise. Bereavement Jason: Prequels rarely work, and this is another example of why. If you've seen the superior Malevolence, then you know the entire plot of Bereavement is laid out in that film's final five minutes. There's just not enough story to sustain the hour and 45 minute running time. Fortunately the last 40 minutes or so play like gangbusters with suspense and a bloody climax where almost everyone dies (spoiler alert). Stevan Mena wants to be John Carpenter, right down to composing his own music, but he needs to work on his scripts a bit more. A Bad for me. Shawn: Here's a movie that has the elements of a good horror film, but it could have been creepier, scarier and darker. It tried though. Yet, in the end, it just didn't do it for me. And for the love of all things horror, maybe you could show us a little more gore. JUST blood no longer counts. Wanna split someone's head open with a shovel? Might as well show me. You wanted to be bloody, didn't you?...

One goal Jason and Shawn have in The Basement is to help aspiring filmmakers get the recognition they deserve. Breaking into the business is tough, and sometimes all it takes is one article or interview to provide that little push toward success. The Basement Dwellers got their push from John Fallon over at Arrow in the Head. And they hope tonight's chat with award-winning writer/director Ryan Shovey will help the New Orleans-based filmmaker get his first feature project off the ground! Shovey's film is called Hunter, and in the tradition of Wes Craven and John Carpenter, he's going the horror route. We could tell you more about the talented Mr. Shovey, like he directed a groovy adaptation of The Tell-Tale Heart and created a web series called Zeik's Bad Day, but we want you to tune in tonight! We first told you about Steve Mena's horror prequel Bereavement back in January . The film was originally going to hit theatres with a limited engagement this Friday, but the release was pushed back due to some problems with the MPAA ratings board. It now lands in cinemas March 4. The delay not only provided some time to change the poster -- apparently the MPAA didn't like the image of a child holding a knife -- but also kick in a little advertising. We've kindly included one of the TV spots below for your viewing pleasure plus the new poster, which plays up leading lady Alexandra Daddario and her hotness. Hotness and horror go hand in hand you know. Bereavement is Mena's follow up to his 2004 low-budget slasher movie Malevolence. That film is one of those hidden gems a la Babysitter Wanted and Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon that we love here in The Basement. It deserves far more exposure than it got, but did become kind of a cult hit, hence the prequel....
