TV series The Equalizer was being made into a movie. Well, you might have. I shouldn't make an assumption like that, because then I make an ass of you and numption.
But The Equalizer will indeed hit the big screen this September, with Denzel Washington in the title role and his Training Day director Antoine Fuqua behind the camera. This alone gives me hope.
Distributor Sony Pictures is so pleased with early test screenings, which scored the highest in the studio's history for an R-rated movie, that the studio already has plans for a follow-up. The hope all along was that The Equalizer could become a franchise.
I'm not of the belief that every movie needs a sequel, but The Equalizer could work. TV shows, comics and novels written as a series are perfect franchise material, and The Equalizer fits into the mold.
I loved the show, which starred the late, great Edward Woodward as retired intelligence agent turned private detective Robert McCall ,who helped various threatened clients equalize the odds. The movie sees McCall's act of kindness toward a prostitute pit him against the Russian mob.
We find out if the movie works on Sept. 26. Now groove to the show's brilliant opening credits.
