Retro Review: Event Horizon (1997)

When I first watched Event Horizon, I thought it was one of the creepiest things I'd ever seen.  I can remember going home, and having to walk down the long, dark hallway to my bedroom. The gruesome -- and at times disturbing -- images the film burned into my brain made that walk one of the longest of my life. Flash forward 23 years (yup, it's been that long already) and director Paul W.S. Anderson's flick has been diminished by time, and many, many messed up horror movies since. But it's still a strong entry in the sci-fi/horror genre, which is one of my faves. For one, the set design remains striking, and contributes to the imposing nature of the film. Ditto Adrian Biddle's cinematography. This movie just looks creepy, and Anderson and editor Martin Hunter cut and pace it in such a way the viewer isn't given time to breathe. There are moments when it feels like they're hitting us over the head with sticks, as opposed to scaring us, but it works. The acting...

The dogs fight back in this new John Wick 3 trailer

Ohboyohboyohboy! Like I wasn't excited enough for John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum. Now they've gone done and released a new trailer for the blood-soaked sequel, and I'm even more stoked to see Keanu Reeves shoot pretty much everyone. And yes, the dogs do fight back in this movie, the promised conclusion to John Wick's story. However, if this flick is as good as the first two, I could watch a million more of these movies.

John Wick: Chapter Two gets a plot

Well, a plot synopsis anyway. The flick already had a plot, hopefully long before it went into production, although stranger things have happened with movies. Stranger indeed. But the folks over at Collider have dug up what will set the titular John Wick off this time around, and fans can rest easy -- people leave his dog and car alone.

Shawn Takes On Batman V Superman Dawn of Justice

Shame on you.   You know who you are.   You’re the ones that apply your opinion, in some pretentious manner, as though what you think is going to change the world. Structure this, story that, too much this, not enough that. Did you forget that this was a superhero movie? Yes, you did.   It was so epic, that you forgot. I’m not going to fan boy, on and on.

John Wick 2 has Morpheus

Looks like the much anticipated -- at least by anyone with a brain -- sequel to the 2014 action smash John Wick will be a bit of a reunion for Keanu Reeves and his Matrix co-star Laurence Fishburne. That's right, Neo and Morpheus will share some screen time again . . .  only not as Neo and Morpheus, obviously, making my analogy pretty stupid when I stop to think about it.

Shawn Vs Contagion

My fetish, with the end of the world continues. Can't get enough of it! Haha. There are some serious motherfuckers in this flick I tell you! And Kate Winslet . The only thing I've seen her in, other than Titanic. Haha. It's the end of the world via weird unknown disease. It builds up beautifully, kills a whole bunch of people and actually ends our current way of life. Did I dig it? To me, it was a steroid injected version of the movie Outbreak with Dustin Hoffman , Morgan Freeman....wait..another group of badassed motherfuckers...Contagion being a more global version. I truly think, without a cast like in Contagion OR Outbreak, the movies would not have worked as well. This is where I step outside our Basement B-movie crawlspace and salute the big name actors. I've said in the past that, because of the style of movies we watch, acting is never an issue. Contagion proves me wrong and, come to think of it, so did Outbreak. That's right. I was wrong. Witho...
