Halloween Day by Day: "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes" (1978)

The 1970's and 1980's was a bit of a strange time in history.  The threat of Cold War nuclear annihilation was balanced by whimsy and silliness. Oh, and killer produce... Random innocent people are being murdered.  At each scene, there is evidence of tomatoes being present.  Are tomatoes rising up and revolting against humanity?  Can they be stopped?  Will they be stopped?  SHOULD they be stopped? And most importantly... WHO is the singer of the hit song, " Puberty Love "? In an age where parody films consist of mostly vignettes using random pop culture references to tell a loosely coherent story while possibly garnering cheap laughs, it's kinda sad that we have to travel to the late 1970's for a decent, clever- albeit silly, horror parody. " Attack of the Killer Tomatoes " is such a film  It parodies the classic B-movies that came before it, featuring creatures mutating and turning against humanity.  And it does so in a funny, honest...

From the Corner: Vampires Suck (2010)

I can appreciate parodies... when they're done well... Becca has moved to a new town.  Where she meets the mysterious Edward.  Hilarity ensues. Oh... and there are vampires. And a werewolf.

We're in Possession of "A Haunted House" Poster!

Once again, Mike S is laying before you lads and lassies some horror movie happiness.  This time, it's one of the posters for the January 11th movie, " A Haunted House " by Open Roads Films.  Several of the posters for this movie have spoofed releases from last year, with the one above- which I found on " Shock Till You Drop " giving a " The Possession " a hand. " A Haunted House " takes a shot at the successful " Paranormal Activity " franchise when a newlywed couple movie into their home, and strange things begin to happen.  Trying to save his wife (and his sex life), the husband calls in whoever he can to help. This movie stars Marlon Wayans as the husband Malcom, and Essence Atkins plays Kisha, his wife.  I'm not going to lie- I'm not a big fan of Wayans... especially in pretty much every movie he's done like the early " Scary Movie " entries.  I do like the poster, though... so I MIGHT give this o...

Ruh-roh! Scooby Doo goes dark in Saturday Morning Massacre

Ever wonder what would happen if Scooby Doo and the gang were taken out of Saturday morning cartoons and dumped in the real world? Well, that's the premise behind director Spencer Parsons's upcoming horror parody Saturday Morning Massacre. The film follows four ghosts hunters who travel the country in a vintage van with their canine companion and investigate the paranormal. Sound Familiar? They get far more than they bargained for when they take on an old mansion with a twisted past. If done right, this could be a lot of fun. And the trailer below certainly holds promise. Saturday Morning Massacre is an official selection at this weekend's Los Angeles Film Festival, so our L.A.-based Basement Dwellers might want to check it out and let us know your thoughts. No word yet on a theatrical release, but we'll keep you updated. Until then, here's the trailer for your eye holes.

Guest Review: Kick Ass

Regular contributor Mike S is back with a review of Kick Ass, therefore making me the last person on the planet to see this movie. I intended to rent it tonight, actually. But my fave movie store had no copies.  Literally. None were sent to the store and I had to walk away with a lone tear falling down my face. True story. Anywho, S's review makes me want to see this flick even more, despite him actually using the phrase "delightful romp." Check it out. A wonderful look at the world of superheros, this movie has humour, and action balanced in a ride that takes you from laughing to cheering. It's a beautifully shot film, that manages to bounce from the slow, drab and plainly shot expositional parts to the over the top, well choreographed and violent action sequences. The acting is pretty good, if not the greatest, but you don't mind as the characters are still engaging and fun to watch. The story is very much like what you'd find in a comic ...
