Halloween Day by Day: Top Five Halloween Masks to Wear During the Pandemic

Halloween is just a few mere days away, and a day that's usually full of good cheer and playfulness has become somber and uncertain.  What is the point if trick or treating and parties are gonna curtailed? Well, one thing about Halloween that MIGHT allow at least the trick or treaters to go out is that it's mask compliant!  So, with that in mind, here are my Top Five Halloween Masks to Wear During the Pandemic... Let's start with a simple one- Ghost Face from the "Scream" franchise.  It's simple (as I said) and fun- while also being roomy enough to allow people to breath freely without spewing potential germs, etc on those around them. The classic Michael Myers mask is a staple of the holiday due to the "Halloween" franchise.  Like Ghost Face, it's simple, but roomy and fun.  You don't even have to talk in order to be "in character"- which will cut down on the chances of inadvertently spreading COVID. "The Karen".  It...

Halloween Day by Day: Top Five Time Periods to Base a Horror Movie On

Humanity has had an obsession with time since they first saw the sun rising and setting.  They have tracked it's course across the sky, and created smaller and smaller units of measurement to do so.  They have sought to stop time, and speed up time, and even reverse time. What follows is my Top Five Time Periods to Base a Horror Movie On.  Just remember though: Time... time is inevitable.  Time is infinite.  Time is coming for you... 1.  Middle Paleolithic:  This is the time period in which modern humans (Homo Sapiens) started to appear and spread across the world.  Multiple human species co-existed, leading many early researches to think there was a missing link between them that lead to ours.  But... what if... that "missing link" was actually a werewolf species? 2.  The Black Plague:  Between 1347 and 1351, killed up to 200 million people across Europe, Asia, and Northern Africa.  It was a horrific and gruesome diseas...

Halloween Day by Day: Top Five Stephen King Adaptations

If there is one writer who's indelibly linked to horror, it'd have to be Stephen King.  And when you're as skilled- and prolific a writer as Stephen King, there will inevitably be adaptations of your writing. So, today, I present you my " Top Five Stephen King Adaptations "! 1.  " The Dead Zone " (1983)-  Directed by David Cronenberg, and starring Christopher Walken, this is one of my favorites.  It is a well crafted, and spooky retelling of the story of a man who becomes psychic after an accident, and whose life get entangled with that of a politician who's fated to destroy the world. 2.  " Misery " (1990)-  One of the most faithful adaptations of a story about a writer who meets his "number one fan" after she rescues him from a car accident.  Starring Kathy Bates, and James Caan, director Rob Reiner gives us a slow burning, tale of horror that keeps you on the edge of your seat.  The sledgehammer scene especially is shudder indu...

Halloween Day by Day: Top Five Horror Funko Pops I Want

If you're a collector, then you're all aware of what Funko Pops are- "cute" little figures based on all sorts of movie, television, and comic book characters.  Well, I've compiled a list of the Top Five Horror Funko Pops I Want... Alien Face Hugger-  Let's start with one from one of my favorite franchises: "Aliens".  The Face Hugger is an iconic alien terror that brings tremors of fear to pretty much anyone that thinks about what it does to you. But hey, it's also giving you free hugs, so it's not ALL bad... right? I don't think a collector of "Aliens" merch would wish to NOT have this one in their inventory. And let's face it... it's kinda cute... in a creepy sort of way, right? Right Ash-  Seriously, given my love of horror and comedy, you all had to expect that Ash from the "Evil Dead" franchise would be on this list. This one just looks really cool, with Ash bearing his trademark boomst...

Mike S's Top Five Horror Movie Posters

One of the things that attracts us to a movie- besides the trailers, is the movie posters.  They have to be eye catching, and able to hint at what the story's about without spoiling it.  They have to make you curious, and want to plunk down your cash to sit in a theatre seat and watch the movie. So, with that in mind, I'm going to present my Top Five Horror Movie Posters:

Mike S's Top Five Scenes That Make "Dementia 13" (1963) a Great Movie

Mike S here with a Top Five List!  This time, I'm going to visit one of my favorite movies EVER- Francis Ford Coppola's debut, " Dementia 13 ".  What follows is a list of the five scenes that make this a great movie.

Mike S's Top 10 Movies to See Before You Die

If you listened to the Extended Edition of the podcast this week, you would've heard Jay and Shawn mention a couple of movies they feel people should watch before they die.  Well, time for- you guessed it- my top ten movies to see before you die... but with a twist.  Five of them are great movies that sit solidly in "The Good"... and five of them sit either in "The Ugly", or the dumpster next to it... Five Great Movies to See Before You Die: 1.  " The Changeling" (1980) - One of my favorite horror movies.  Stars George C. Scott in a rare role showing vulnerability.  Great cast, great art direction, great camera work- just an all round great movie. 2.  "Hamburger Hill" (1987) -  One of those rare war movies that I really enjoyed- which is actually pretty high praise from me.  Just a phenomenally well crafted and organic movie. 3.  "The Hitcher" (1986)-  Another of my top five horror movies.  Stars Rutger Hauer in a movie t...

Mike S's Top Five Animated Films to Do as Live Action

Disney has- for some reason (aka "Cash Cow"), started remaking some of their classic animated features into live action ones.  This got me thinking... what animated films would I like to see as live action films? Well, we don't have to wait, as I'm going to answer that question right now.  Here are my top five animated films I'd like to see remade as live action features.

5 Grimm Fairy Tales I'd Like to See as Movies

We were all kids once... or at least I'm assuming we all were. Anyways, as kids we all heard or read the classic Grimm Fairy Tales, right? Right.  I'm going to assume you said, "Right".

Mike S's Top 5 Non-DC/Marvel Characters That Deserve to be on the Big Screen

After I did a list of DC characters , and a list of Marvel characters that deserved to be on the big screen, I could hear the sound of people saying, "HEY- They're are more to comics than those two companies!" And you'd be absolutely correct: Vertigo, Image, WildStorm, Dynamite, IDW, etc all have some great characters that I feel deserve a bit of love and appreciation... and possibly a big screen adaptation.

Mike S's Top 5 Marvel Heroes That Deserve a Big Screen Adaptation

Recently, I did a list of my top five DC heroes that I felt deserved a big screen adaptation ( you can read it here ).  It's only fair that I do one for Marvel, right? Right. I have to be honest though- I'm not altogether familiar with the Marvel heroes, having grown up mostly reading DC... however, there are a few that have caught my eye over the years, and I think would make good movie entertainment.

Five movies my dad showed me that changed my world

Jason here. It's Father's Day, my first as a dad (woot!), and in honour of The Man Who Taught Me Everything There Is To Know About Being A Man, I thought I'd pay him homage be celebrating one of the many loves he instilled in me at a young age -- a love of film. Dad has been dead 21 years now, more than half my life, but his love of movies lives on. He was a big guy, a contractor, and he loved his hockey. But he enjoyed film as well. Some of my favourite memories of him are the times we went to the movies. If he hadn't introduced me to the films below, I wouldn't have become a student of film and this site/show/podcast probably wouldn't exist. So Happy Father's Day to my dad and all the other dads out there. Make it a good one! Star Wars: My dad saw this with my mom in Hawaii before he took me to it, and called it the best Western ever made. You guessed it, Han Solo was the man to him. I remember seeing it at a local drive-in. We sat in the cab of hi...
