After I did a list of DC characters, and a list of Marvel characters that deserved to be on the big screen, I could hear the sound of people saying, "HEY- They're are more to comics than those two companies!"
And you'd be absolutely correct: Vertigo, Image, WildStorm, Dynamite, IDW, etc all have some great characters that I feel deserve a bit of love and appreciation... and possibly a big screen adaptation.
So, here we- my top five non-DC/Marvel characters that I feel deserve to be on the big screen:
1. Vampirella (Dynamite)- Originally a Harris/Warren Comic character, Vampirella is a vampire... from space. Who fights monsters and loves a human. In heels... her, not the human. What's not to love, eh?
2. Hack/Slash (Dynamite)- Two outcasts travel the country fighting serial killers and monsters... and even a vampire from space. I read the special where they meet Vampirella, and found the two characters to be interesting and saw the potential for a decent modern vampire hunter movie.
3. Agent Prufrock from "Proof" (Image)- A sasquatch that's a member of the FBI, and investigates reports of supernatural and crytopzoological crimes. I loved this comic. I just don't know if I'd prefer a live action version, or an animated version though both would be interesting to me.
4. Atomic Robo (Red 5 Comics)- An atomic powered robot that sometimes works for the Government to investigate "weird" shit. The stories are very much like the old pulp serials you'd see in the theatre. They had a very fun "Rocketeer" sort of feel to them.
5. Groo the Wanderer (Dark Horse): A brainless barbarian roans the countryside innocently wreaking havoc and changing the course of history without even knowing. This would have to be an animated film in my opinion, otherwise, it wouldn't work at all. I suspect that this one would be the least popular of the five listed here, but I and real Groo fans would probably enjoy it alot.
