Retro Review: Fright Night (1985)

Fright Night is the first horror movie I saw in a theatre, and it scared the crap right out of me. I'd seen scary movies before, but at home on TV. I knew well and good vampires weren't real, but I wasn't prepared for the immersive experience of seeing a vampire movie on a giant Vancouver screen with full audience participation, not to mention big-budget gore and special effects. It terrified and excited me, and I was hooked! Fright Night doesn't scare me anymore. Hundreds of viewings have diminished its impact to do so. But it has aged really, really well, and the effects still have an impact. I'm a particular fan of the almost demonic vampire makeup. No glittery, Emo douchebags here! Chris Sarandon is probably my favourite vampire ever put on screen. He's charming and funny, but is also monstrous and scary. Pretty much everything a vampire should be. And I get why all the ladies would flock to him. This is an iconic horror villain. It goes without ...

Into the MCU: "Spider-Man: Far From Home" (2019)

Today is a bit of a sad day because it's the last installment of " Into the MCU ".  It's been a heck of ride, and I can't think of a better way to end it than with a movie about one of my favorite superheroes- Spider:Man... Thanos has been defeated.  The universe has been saved... but Tony Stark is gone. Peter Parker, still dealing with the grief of losing his mentor decides he wants to take a break from super heroics by taking a school field trip of Europe.  But his plans are soon hijacked by events beyond his control ... " Spider-Man: Far From Home " is a nice little "epilogue" to the whole " Infinity Saga ", as it deals with the loss of Tony Stark, and it's affect on Peter Parker.  It is a wonderful blend of action, humour, and drama.  To be honest, it is one of the few movies that rings true as a Spider-Man movie.  The story moves at a quick, smooth pace, and is pretty coherent and tight.  There are a couple of sub-pl...

Into the MCU: Spider-Man: Homecoming

Jay here taking over for Mike S as it's his birthday, and we all deserve a break on our birthdays. But our trek Into the MCU must go on, so I'm stepping in for a look back at Spider-Man: Homecoming, which was the first feature film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to focus on our Friendly Neighbourhood Wall Crawler... with a little help from Tony Stark, who surprisingly provides the movie's conscience. Robert Downey Jr. is awesome, as always. Just in case you're wondering... Although some liberties were taken with the character -- including the inclusion of special suits provided by our man Tony -- this is still the best incarnation of the character ever put on screen. This is largely due to Tom Holland stepping into the tights as Spider-Man. He is THE BEST Spider-Man ever, finding the kid inside the costume which, I admit, brought out the kid inside me. Spider-Man's adventures are supposed to be fun, and this movie is just that. There's equal measures...

Family Movie Night: Onward

We've started a new tradition in our house during this COVID-19 crisis, and that's a night where we gather and watch a movie the whole family can enjoy. Hence we call it Family Movie Night. The films aren't limited to cartoons and traditional kid movies. My boy is eight, so he can get into a variety of films. But we started with Disney and Pixar's Onward, as it just hit streaming, and comes from a reliable brand. Hands down, this is one of Pixar's best. It has humour everyone can enjoy, some vibrant animation, and a solid, fun and surprisingly emotional story. All things one expects from Pixar, only more so. The world of Onward is much like our own, only with fantasy beings living in a world with vehicles, houses, phones and computers, because using them proved easier than conjuring their own special kind of magic. However, Elvin teenage brothers Ian and Barley need to seek out some magic in order to spend one more day with their deceased father. It'...

Spider-Man hits Europe in the first Far From Home trailer

So the post Avengers: Endgame world is already shaping up to be a fun place as Spider-Man travels to Europe in this first, and much anticipated, trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home. Already, I'm missing the presence of one Robert Downey Jr. Is this a hint at what's to come in Endgame? Best not to speculate, but focus on the movie at hand.

Jason versus Digging Up the Marrow

I've said this on the show, and I will say it again here: at some point in a filmmaker's career he or she will want to make a movie about making movies. Why? Because making movies is fun and people are interested in it. But is it an interesting enough topic for a feature film? Well, when left in the hands of a horror-movie director like Adam Green, and when said horror-movie director decides to make a fake documentary featuring himself and his crew going in search of monsters, it just might be. So, you know, stick with me!

Retro Review: Fright Night

I first saw this movie back in 1985. It's the first horror film I watched in a theatre and it scared the crap out of me. Now it's just a great funhouse ride of laughs, scares and gruesome, but fun, visual effects. Chris Sarandon is just awesome as the vampire and Roddy McDowall is a joy to watch as Peter Vincent: Vampire Killer. This was made back when horror movies, and movies in general, were a lot of fun and it shows. I find it hard to believe the remake will have anywhere near the energy and wit writer/director Tom Holland put into every frame of his movie. A Good for me.
