Steven C. Miller directs Dolittle to Bad Boys for Life

Two high-profile films take aim at your hard-earned money this weekend, and we've got a star-powered interview for your ear holes as well. Suffice to say, this is going to be a really big show From The Basement on the mighty Radio NL this eve. For one, Jason interviewed director Steven C. Miller about his latest flick, Line of Duty, starring Aaron Eckhart. The film is a loving tribute to 80s and 90s action cinema, which Miller knows a thing or two about. And he's worked with the likes of Bruce Willis, Sylvester Stallone and Nic Cage. Steven discusses the movie, working with his idols, and more during the conversation, which takes place later in the show. As for Jason and Shawn; they're talking the weekend's big releases, which are the much-anticipated Bad Boys for Life starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, and Robert Downey Jr.'s first post-MCU movie, Dolittle. The Basement Boys also get into Netflix's latest offering, Medical Police, the indie horror...

Brandon Lee Cox directs his photography at The Basement

One of the most important aspects of any film is cinematography. Let's face it, film is a visual medium, and the cinematographer -- or director of photography (DOP) -- is the one who makes the pictures work. Brandon Lee Cox (above, on the right) cut his teeth as DOP on everything from music videos to feature films, his most recent being Line of Duty for director Steven C. Miller. Yup, we're still pimping that movie... because it deserves it! I just got off the horn with Brandon, and we had a great chat about his career, what it takes to make a movie look so good, and how integral the relationship between a DOP and director is. And we talk about his influences, inspirations and how he got into this line of work. It's a great chat about an import part of the filmmaking process. When do you get to hear it? We will unleash or conversation with Brandon on Friday, Jan. 24, at 6:05 P.M., only on Radio NL 610 AM Kamloops.

Line of Duty, Crypsis, and Netflix's Dracula

It's all over but the shouting... err, that is last night's From The Basement broadcast on the mighty Radio NL 610 AM Kamloops was another roaring success. And now it's time to unleash the podcast. No interviews this week -- we're saving them for the weeks to come -- but we do have several reviews on the chopping block which will surely tickle your ear holes. Jay took in the new Aaron Eckhart action flick Line of Duty, and the monster movie Crypsis. One was great, the other the opposite of great. Hazard a guess which is worth your time? Stick with us! And stick around as Shawn weighs in on Netflix's Dracula, and the sequel to Goon. He also has an amusing story on the limits of friendship, especially when faced with a potential beast in the woods. It's a shocking tale, we promise you that. There's also interesting conversations about the placement of YouTube ads, Ricky Gervais's Golden Globes speech, and too-serious TV. Hey, we warned you this i...

Steven C. Miller returns to The Basement

We first talked with director Steven C. Miller back in 2012, shortly after he had success with his horror flick Silent Night. Steven had come onto the scene with a few genre hits, including Under the Bed and The Aggression Scale, but it was Silent Night that -- in our eyes -- took his career to the next level. Since then he's worked with the likes of Bruce Willis, Sylvester Stallone and Nicolas Cage on high-profile projects Extraction, Escape Plan 2 and Marauders. With each one he took things up a notch, creating increasingly entertaining action films. His latest flick, Line of Duty, is among his best work. Don't believe me? Read our review here . I just got off the line with Steven, and we talked about the movie, working with the great Aaron Eckhart, and his career thus far. It's a fun and informative chat with a man whose goal is to give the audience a good time, and I can't wait for you all to hear it. When, you ask? How about next Friday, Jan. 17, at 6:05 in...

Review: Line of Duty

I was jonesing to see Steven C. Miller's latest action flick for a while. It's been out in the states since November, but just turned up in Our Home and Native Land. Suffice to say, as soon as I got my hands on a copy, I poured myself a whisky and watched it. And I was not disappointed. Sure, this is a lower budget effort, but Miller is very good at getting a lot of bang for his buck, and he does so again here. Much of Line of Duty's running time plays out in real time, with disgraced cop Aaron Eckhart in a race to rescue a police chief's daughter from kidnappers. This makes for a propulsive thriller that's essentially one long chase via foot, vehicle and, toward the end, helicopter. Miller and Eckhart commit themselves to the project, instilling it with energy and fun. The director knows how to shoot an action scene, and excels at keeping things moving. And Eckhart throws himself into the role as an aging action guy with a lot of baggage. They make this fil...

Jay's Top 5 Christmas chillers

'Tis the season to be jolly... and more than a little bit spooky. Sure, there's lots of Christmas cheer to be found in movies like National Lampoons Christmas Vacation and It's A Wonderful Life, but there's also plenty of dark and horrific tales to haunt the Yuletide season. Below are my Top 5 favourite horror movies set during the holiday season. So, in no particular order... Silent Night Steven C. Miller updates the notorious slasher flick Silent Night, Deadly Night with this fun, and violent, slasher film. We've got a great, over-the-top performance by Malcolm McDowell, and an effectively subtle one by Jaime King. Lots of good kills and boobs. Everything a growing boy needs Black Christmas (1974) Yes it was remade in 2006, and we're getting yet one more reboot next week, but none can surpass the low-key chills of Bob Clark's classic. This predated Halloween by four years, and arguably set the bar for every slasher movie to come. Crude and ...

My Two Bits: Extraction

There was an era when action movies were simple, straight-ahead entertainment. I call this era the 80s and Cannon Films was the mecca for such fine, filmed entertainment. Modern cinema could take a cue from this time period, and learn well from it. It's rare when a movie comes along like those I grew up watching. But every now and then a flick surfaces that reminds me of those simpler times. Lean on story and mean on action, the perfect Friday night beer drinking fare.

Hold your breath -- it's the Submerged trailer

Steven C. Miller has generated a lot of buzz in horror circles, with his Silent Night , Under the Bed and Aggression Scale earning the director a sizeable following. You might also remember Steven was a guest on our show last year. With his latest flick, Submerged , Steven looks like he's ready to tackle the action genre . Given the strength of the preview below, I think he's up for the challenge.

Basement fave Silent Night headed to theatres

Last year at about this time Shawn and I were introduced to the work of director Steven C. Miller . And what an introduction it was! Silent Night, Steven's loose remake of Silent Night, Deadly Night , is a lean, mean slasher machine that did what all good remakes should -- it took the idea of a killer Santa Claus and ran with it. And boy did it run far. Silent Night will get regular seasonal play alongside the classic Black Christmas . We didn't catch Silent Night in theatres during its original run. However, lucky Basementites south of the border -- that means you, U.S.A. -- get another chance as the flick begins screening in theatres on Dec. 18. Exact theatres and dates are still being sorted out, but Sacramento, Buffalo and New Orleans are on the list. For the uninitiated, the police force of a remote Midwestern town search for a killer Santa Claus who is picking off citizens on Christmas Eve. It's up to Jaime King and Malcolm McDowell to stop him. If yo...

Peep the official trailer for Steven C. Miller's Under the Bed

We're big fans of director Steven C. Miller 's Christmas slasher flick Silent Night , and anxiously await the release of his next movie, Under the Bed . We've teased the French preview before, but now we've got a look at the official North American preview. Mofo looks awesome! During an exclusive interview on the show, Miller described Under the Bed as a throwback to the Amblin Entertainment productions of the 1980s, only bloody. The official synopsis is pretty simple: two brothers team up to battle a creature that lives under the bed. But enough talk. Watch and be impressed. Under the Bed is scheduled for release some time this summer. Learn more about the flick on Facebook . Source: The Wrap Related articles PeePaw on Dying Make a Date with Steven C. Shawn kicks things off with a movie no self-respecting action fan hasn't seen at least once. That's right, First Blood ! Classic, and made just two hours away from Basement Headquarters by motorcar. Then Jason and a horde of possessed townsfolk are comin' to kill yah, comin' to kill yah with Dead and Breakfast .
