Catching up with... Rambo: Last Blood

Before I get into this review of Rambo: Last Blood, I will state it's one of the weaker entries in the franchise. But even a weak Rambo movie is better than 90 percent of what Hollywood cranks out on a weekly basis. Why? Because the Rambo movies are unapologetically violent revenge films. No punches are pulled. Enemies are shot, stabbed, decapitated, disemboweled and blown up. And each and every one of them has it coming. Much like 2008's Rambo -- and the one that started it all, First Blood -- this latest entry is more of a serious take on the character. Here he's portrayed as an old man with a lot of blood on his hands. He's trying to live a good life but, as he tells one character; "I haven't changed. I've just put a lid on it." That lid is blown off when his niece falls prey to human traffickers. What transpires is deathly serious, at times hard to watch, and more than a little sad. Yes, it ends in a brilliantly executed finale where all th...

Top 5 quotes from the Rambo franchise

It's Rambo Day, which means it's a day we celebrate all things Rambo. And no, we didn't make that up. It's a real thing, and part of the lead in to Rambo: Last Blood coming out on Friday. We were going to celebrate by doing a Top 5 favourite Rambo kills, but the fine folks at Arrow in the Head already did something like that, so I figured why not share our favourite Rambo quotes. I like quotes. Quotes are good. Anyway, here we go with our Top 5, in no particular order: 5) "They drew first blood." - John Rambo, First Blood (1982) Because it's always cool when the hero references the title of the movie in a quote. 4) "Live for nothing, or die for something. Your call." - John Rambo, Rambo (2008) Because it's 100-per-cent truth, and is the exclamation mark on a great monologue by Stallone. 3) "I could have killed 'em all. I could kill you. In town, you're the law. Out here, it's me. Don't push it, or I'l...

Rambo: Last Blood red-band trailer promises a brutally satisfying good time

The movie gods have not been in my favour lately when it comes to checking out the latest releases in theatres. Sadly, it doesn't look like I'll be able to catch Rambo: Last Blood when it hits this weekend. Sad face is sad. But I will bloody well see it eventually! Until I do, I have this wonderful red-band teaser to satiate my bloodlust. Any concerns I had about this one not living up to the beautiful carnage of the 2008 film have been put to rest. Rambo is back, and things will get bloody! Take a look: What more can I say? Sylvester Stallone delivers on what he promises. What say you? You excited for Rambo: Last Blood? It comes out Friday, you know... Source: IGN

We're exactly a month out from the new Rambo movie, and star Sylvester Stallone has put out a new teaser for the flick, and boy oh boy, does it look good! New Rambo V images reveal his adopted family

It's been 11 years since John Rambo last appeared on the big screen, and that flick was certainly the best the franchise, and character, had to offer. A new and, according to Stallone, final Rambo film is headed our way later this year. Stallone let some images drop via his Instagram account yesterday, and they reveal characters he says are Rambo's adopted family in the film.

Venom and A Star Is Born

The time is now! Meaning it's time once again for Jason and Shawn to take to the Interwebs for this, the extended cut of Friday's segment on the mighty Radio NL 610 AM Morning Show. What is an extended cut, you might ask? Easy: it's extra content created for long-time fans of We Came from the Basement featuring the original duo of Jason and Shawn. The show turned eight this year, and no one in The Basement wants to disappoint those who have stuck with us since the beginning.

Jason versus Rambo: First Blood Part II

It's almost impossible not to think of this film when thinking about the 80s. With one movie, Sylvester Stallone and director George P. Cosmatos tapped into a post- Vietnam war consciousness,  Cold War fears of Russia and gave birth to the cinematic one-man army. Impressive, no? But how does it stand up almost 30 years later? Stick with me. John Rambo is released from prison by the government for a top-secret covert mission in the last place on Earth he'd want to return -- the jungles of Vietnam .

Jason and Shawn versus First Blood and Dead and Breakfast

First Blood Shawn : You need to see it because it began the legacy of ALL these Chuck Norris -Arnold-save-the- Vietnam - POW - movies . Sly is the action man that started it all. Can I say more? Yes, but don't DIE before YOU see it. The movie covered so many different era events too. Vietnam vets, police brutality, prejudice, stereotyping and discrimination. And shit blows up. Awesome. Good. Jason: I can't remember the last time I watched First Blood. It was certainly back in the 90s, maybe even the 80s. Shame. I know. Some 80s action guy I turned out to be. First off, aside from the hair, fashion and fact that Stallone doesn't look like he was chipped out of rock, this movie holds up well. That's because it's a simple story told in a straight-forward manner. There's no special effects, just cool shit done in-camera. And the action is pretty straight ahead. I forgot how good Sly is in this movie. People forget that he was a really great...

Movies You Need to See Before You Die Vol. 3 and an interview with Steven C. Miller

Back by popular demand is a third volume of We Came from the Basement's ever popular Movies You Need to See Before Your Die! Commence choral performance of Beethoven's Ode to Joy -- Die Hard version! Shawn kicks things off with a movie no self-respecting action fan hasn't seen at least once. That's right, First Blood ! You know the story, a Vietnam Veteran uses his combat skills against the lawman of a small town when he arrests and abuses him. Classic, and made just two hours away from Basement Headquarters by motorcar. Then Jason and a horde of possessed townsfolk are comin' to kill yah, comin' to kill yah with Dead and Breakfast . This 2004 musical/horror/comedy deals with a night at a local bed and breakfast that turns into a bloody supernatural fight to the death. And because you can't tame awesome, the Basement Boys take a break from reviewing movies to chat with director Steven C. Miller about his recent slasher flick Silent Night and hi...
