New Hellboy trailer teases a monster of a time

I dug -- up to a point -- Guillermo del Toro's two Hellboy movies. They were fun, and offered a spirited turn by Ron Perlman as the hero of the title. But I cried me no tears when a reboot was announced, as I've nothing invested in the character beyond those movies. My interest peaked when Neil Marshall, who directed my favourite werewolf movie of all time, Dog Soldiers, signed on to direct.

Sunday Night at the Movies: Tales of Halloween

'Twas the Sunday before Halloween, and all through The Basement, not a creature was stirring . . . except one allegedly creepy movie featuring 10 short stories by 11 of the most notorious directors working in indie horror at the moment. That's right, we're celebrating the final Sunday before the Best Night of the Year with the new horror anthology Tales of Halloween, a flick we pimped right before *cough cough* calling it quits last Halloween. Hey, we changed our collective mind. Wanna fight about it?

Five years later . . .

What a difference a half decade can make. It was Friday, Oct. 1, 2010 when our little show that could launched on 92.5FM CFBX at 10 p.m. and the world changed for Shawn and I. We were called Film Reviews from the Basement back then, and had spent one season slugging it out as a moderately successful podcast. Then Steve Marlow and Brant Zwicker of The X (pictured above) took a chance on a couple of aging film geeks -- we had originally approached them about having some ads for the podcast play on the air, they had a better idea -- and the rest is history.

Eleven directors on board for Halloween anthology

No, not an anthology related to the popular Halloween franchise, but one set on Halloween night. Think Trick r Treat, but with more directors. And ultimately more stories. Ten stories that is. From 11 directors. All set on Halloween. Sounds like our kind of horror anthology!

A first look at NBC's Constantine

We told you about the upcoming NBC TV adaptation of the popular Hellblazer comic  last fall . Well, the pilot for the series is shooting right now, and a first look at John Constantine himself has hit the Internet. Constantine is played by Matt Ryan and, as you'll see, he is very accurate to the comic-book character.

Dog Soldiers director will helm Troll Hunter remake

Talk about mixed emotions! We in The Basement have a lot of love for director Neil Marshall 's work. Dog Soldiers and The Descent in particular. And we also have a lot of love for the brilliant Norwegian flick Troll Hunter , which we reviewed at the start of Season Three. Those mixed emotions come into play with news that Troll Hunter is getting an English-language remake . Given the film's international success, it was inevitable Hollywood would redo the found-footage flick. Because no one in Hollywood thinks people can read subtitles. The world doesn't need a Troll Hunter remake. Go find the original and enjoy. But with Marshall on board as writer and director, I'm conflicted. I think he could do something really cool. He's a talented dude. I just don't want to see this movie remade. What do you all think? Troll Hunter begins production early next year. No word yet on if it'll be found footage or not. In the meantime, here's the trailer ...
