Dark Phoenix is the Secret Life of Pets 2

From The Basement celebrates its first year at the mighty Radio NL... and Howie Reimer saw fit to take the week off. That's fine, Howie. You just go and do that! But the show must go on, so Jason and Shawn take over the Radio NL 610 AM Morning Show in his place!

The Snowman creates Halloween chills

When I think of snowmen, I don't typically think of scary. Even attempts to create evil killer snowmen movies (I'm talking about YOU, Jack Frost) have generated more chuckles than chills. Then along comes this trailer for The Snowman, a new serial killer flick starring Michael Fassbender, and the whole killer snowman genre comes alive.

Five years later . . .

What a difference a half decade can make. It was Friday, Oct. 1, 2010 when our little show that could launched on 92.5FM CFBX at 10 p.m. and the world changed for Shawn and I. We were called Film Reviews from the Basement back then, and had spent one season slugging it out as a moderately successful podcast. Then Steve Marlow and Brant Zwicker of The X (pictured above) took a chance on a couple of aging film geeks -- we had originally approached them about having some ads for the podcast play on the air, they had a better idea -- and the rest is history.

Lachlan Labere versus X-Men: Days of Future Past

Bryan Singer has saved the X-Men. OK, the Days of Future Past director wasn't alone. Its trio of screenwriters helped. So did the team of producers. John Ottman played a part, once again doing the music for the series. And I suppose the army of artists, sound people, effects wizards, camera people, casting department, etc.

Matt Bellamy versus X-Men: Days of Future Past

Any time a comic book movie is released, you're going to be hit with a whole lot of hyperbole proclaiming it as "the best ever!" or "the most EPIC thing of all time!" because you're dealing with a fan-base that seems to only deal in extremes. We've already heard it once so far this year with the release of Captain America: The Winter Soldier , and although I did enjoy that flick, was it really the greatest thing I'd ever laid my geeky eyes on? Not quite! What about this latest X-Men instalment then? How does it stack up?

The Month of Horror Day 28: Eden Lake

Basement contributor Matt Bellamy has taken it upon himself to watch and review at least one horror movie a day for the month of October . . . because he's awesome that way! Warning: tonight's installment will make your boil over with Bellamy-like rage. I'm already beginning to boil with rage just thinking about this movie again, I'll try not to lash out too much during this review but no promises! My anger does not stem from the quality of this fi lm at all, by the way but because I hate so much of what is represented throughout it. I have never experienced such visceral reactions to a movie before in my life and I felt like I needed to go for a walk or hit a punching bag afterwards, it got to me that badly! I never knew I held such venom and contempt towards a-hole kids before, you know, the ones with absolutely zero respect or regard for authority or their elders. The kinds of kid...
