Is Jeff Bridges reprising The Dude for a mystery project?

The Big Lebowski is one of the Coen Brothers' best films. Period. Hands down. Bar none. And a HUGE part of the film's success is due to Jeff Bridges' iconic turn as The Dude, that White-Russian slurping, perpetually stoned bowler. Granted, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi and John Turturro are also amazing, but The Dude is, well The Dude, man.

First Man has Bad Times with Goosebumps

It's a big weekend at the box office, with no fewer than four movies competing for your dollar, and Jason and Howie are ready, willing and able to throw down on what to watch as We Came from the Basement returns to the Radio NL 610 AM Morning Show. But they aren't just talking movies, as Netflix debuts a limited series based on the classic Shirley Jackson novel The Haunting of Hill House, and Taylor Swift is now liked 25 per cent less by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Shawn of the "Deados" vs RIPD

Hell-o. It seems like I haven't watched a movie for ages. Why the hell would I start with this one!? I've always been intrigued by movies that tackle "afterlife" scenarios. Call it a life (or death) curiosity, I'm sure we all have, especially as we age and our mortality becomes more and more evident. But what did I think of this flick? Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds offer an interesting pairing.  Bridges is a diverse, well rounded actor and Reynolds is type cast into his usual pretentious, witty (barely), "same old" persona as every other movie he's in. The poster looks like it would be a better fit in the 80's and to be honest, the movie may have done better there, too. While kind of cool, in terms of the CGI, the story was dull, the chemistry was bland or off and Jeff Bridges spoke as though he had rocks in his mouth. Barely understandable at the best of times. I really don't think this movie worked for me. It just tattered ar...

Rest in Peace Department comes alive July 19th

The past few years have seen many comic books being adapted for the big screen and the small screen - and they've run the spectrum from The Avengers to The Walking Dead .  This summer will see a few more of them, including "Rest In Peace Department". German director Robert Schwentke will be directing this adaptation of of the Dark Horse comic, which is going by the shortened name of "R.I.P.D".  Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges have been tapped to star in this Universal Pictures foray. Reynolds plays Nick Cruz Walker- a recently murdered cop who agrees to join an undead police force keeping the supernatural peace in the hopes of finding the person responsible for his death. This movie has the potential to be as cool as the first "Men in Black" movie... or as lame as the third one. "R.I.P.D." will be in theatres July 19th. The Top Five of 2010: Jason's Picks

As I said in my review for True Grit, 2010 was a terrible year for movies. I ventured to a theatre perhaps five times this year and sought out very few of the year's offerings on DVD. Given that our Basement duties require us to seek out the odd, obscure and crappy, Shawn and I have little time to catch up on the latest releases anyway. But I was able to scrounge up a Top Five for the year, which are listed below. Keep in mind these are my biased choices based on what I've seen. Films that could very well be in the running include The King's Speech, 127 Hours, The Social Network, The Fighter and a slew of others. But, based on what I've watched, I will stand by and hang by this list. Remember, Shawn and I are back in The Basement next Friday (Jan. 7) at 10 p.m. PST on 92.5FM CFBX Kamloops and www.thex.ca . The podcast will be up by the Monday. We'll put the urban legend documentary Cropsey and the mockbuster sequel Mega Shark Versus Crocosaurus on the chopping b...

Micro Review: True Grit (2010)

As a whole, 2010 was a terrible year for movies save for a select few gems, not the least of which are The Town and Inception. To have a late-year release come and best those two films took me totally by surprise. The fact The Best Movie of 2010 comes from Joel and Ethan Coen does not. We didn't need a remake of John Wayne's classic Western, but the brothers have gone back to the source material, the 1968 novel of the same name, and done a retelling that's all their own. The film is a fine balance between drama and action picture, with a healthy dose of character study and black comedy added to the mix. And don't forget four of the best performances anyone is likely to see in years. Best of all, True Grit is relentlessly entertaining. You don't need to wind your brain up too much to enjoy the hell out of it. It's hard for a movie to get much more Good than this.

Guest Review: Tron Legacy

Anthony Michael Bosa is in The Basement with his thoughts on the Tron upgrade. Read on for details! This is a excellent sequel to the classic from my youth. The disc fighting, light cycles and new machines were all awesome and done with a good homage to the original. However, there were no tank battles, which is a disappointment. But at least the tanks were there! The upgrade to the grid and the fact that they used CGI to make certain characters younger played well into the film. All in all, if you liked the first film, or even if you didn't, this is worth a watch. A Good review from me.

Tron... The Legacy Begins

Disney dips into it's vaults, and returns to the world of "Tron" to bring us "Tron: Legacy".  Fans will remember the 1982 classic, which was ahead of its time for visual effects and concept.  In a time when arcade games were the rage, "Tron" hooked an audience with the concept of being INSIDE an arcade game- and kept that audience with a solid storyline and great acting.  Of all the video game movies made, fans will probably agree that "Tron" was one of the best of all time. And now, on 17 December 2010, Disney will be releasing "Tron: Legacy", which continues the story of Kevin Flynn (played by Jeff Bridges from the first movie), as his son, Sam, gets pulled into the digital world where he's been trapped for the past 20 years. This movie promises to be a joy ride for fans of the original movie, and possibly a treat for those that were unaware of this franchise.  Given the advances in computer generated imagery, we can only ...

Wanna see some footage from Tron Legacy? Then check out this Daft Punk video

You won't regret it. Trust me. It was a tough call for news today. If I had all the time in the world I would flood you, Basement Dweller, with all kinds of tidbits of geekdom.Seeing as the day job keeps me busy, you get just one. It was a toss up between the cool footage/OK music below and word that Lucas may convert the Indiana Jones films into 3D (three extra dollars) for an upcoming release. Seeing as the Lucas news makes me want to punch someone in the nuts, you get the Tron footage, which is pretty slick. "Electrify the girls and boys if you'd be so kind," Michael Sheen tells Daft Punk, who have a cameo in the film. The track they play is titled Derezzed. The footage is all from the movie, which looks spectacular. December seems a long way off. Maybe I'll watch the video again.

The Coen Brothers bring True Grit to Christmas

We here in The Basement don't get too excited about remakes, but when Joel and Ethan Coen decide to redo a classic John Wayne Western with Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon, it's hard not to get too excited. When the film looks as good as the trailer below, one starts to think the film has promise. Taking on the role made famous by Wayne in the first film adaptation of Charles Portis' novel, Bridges plays eye-patch-wearing, beverage-loving U.S. Marshall, Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn. The trailer doesn't give us too much plot-wise, but it seems to follow the same story as the book and original film, which had Cogburn going deep into "Indian Territory" to help a young woman named Mattie Ross (newcomer Hailee Steinfeld) hunt down her father's killer (Josh Brolin). Also along for the ride is Texas Ranger La Boeuf (a nearly unrecognizable Damon). Give the preview a look, and be sure to share your thoughts!
