Bond hottie headlines sleep-based horror Mara

It's been a while since I've seen former Bond girl Olga Kurylenko in anything, which is a shame as, aside from being downright beautiful, she was one of the better Bond girls in recent years. But she's back in the upcoming horror flick Mara, which hails from one of the producers of Paranormal Activity and Insidious. Pretty good pedigree as far as I'm concerned.

Mike S's Top Five Canadian Horror Films

It's the Canada Day long weekend, and what better way for me to celebrate... than with a list of my top five favorite Canadian made horror movies? Am I right- or am I right, eh? Right.

Jason talks Cooties

A horror movie involving murderous children can be a precarious idea. I mean, come on. You don't mess with kids in our modern society. Or at all. Period. They are sacred. As I parent, I get that. Add in some black humour and the whole idea of a horror/comedy about murderous children should be sacrilege. Right? I said right? Stick with me!

Leigh Whannell will direct Insidious: Chapter 3

It's no secret  James Wan won't be back to direct the third film in the Insidious franchise. Let's face it, the man is balls deep in the new Fast and Furious movie . He's a bit preoccupied. Yet, given the financial success of the Insidious flicks, a third film was inevitable. In fact, it comes out next April.

Blumhouse offers up another creepfest with Jessabelle

Blumhouse is one of the few names in horror I trust these days. Paranormal Activity , Sinister, Insidious , and The Purge, not to mention Dark Skies and Oculus, are solid entries in the genre. Sure, they divide fans, but that's what good stuff does. Producer Jason Blum has yet another flick headed our way later this summer. This one's called Jessabelle , and the trailer below offers us what we've come to expect from the man's production company -- creepy shit going down!

No Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne for Insidious: Chapter 3

There's a whole year to go before Insidious : Chapter 3 hits theatres, but a few details about the script have already surfaced online. Seems screenwriter Leigh Whannell is taking the third flick in a bit of a different direction, which is fine by me.

Lionsgate has Cooties

Funnily enough, Matt Bellamy and I were talking about Elijah Wood 's new horror/comedy Cooties around the beer and wing table just the other night. Now we hear director Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion's flick, which is getting rave reviews at Sundance , is being eyed for North American distribution by Lionsgate .

Jason versus Insidious Chapter 2

The first Insidious was a surprise hit that delighted mainstream audiences and polarized horror fans. Some in The Basement dug it, others were left with mixed emotions. I'm one of the ones who dug it. How does Insidious Chapter 2 stand up? Stick with me! The haunted Lambert family seeks to uncover the mysterious childhood secret that has left them dangerously connected to the spirit world.  Whatever you felt about James Wan and Leigh Whannell 's Insidious will likely stand with this second film. If you dug the scares, quirky humour and dark journey into The Further, then you'll feel the same about Insidious Chapter 2. If you didn't like what they were slinging then, you probably won't now. As far as I'm concerned, this is a solid sequel that does everything right, improving on the first by fleshing out the back story and continuing the tale of the Lambert family in much the same way that Poltergeist II : The Other Side did with Poltergeist. But I...

Blumhouse, ABC team for haunted house series

Blumhouse Productions, the brainchildren behind horror hits Paranormal Activity , Insidious , The Purge and Sinister , has teamed with the ABC network to create a pilot for an upcoming TV series about haunted houses . . . or a haunted house. Details are scarce. Literally, that's all we know about the project. The production company previously worked with ABC on the series The River, which I never bothered to check out during its original run. Founded by Jason Blum, Blumhouse is rapidly become the go-to production company for big screen horror. The above mentioned titles aside, Blumhouse has Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones and The Purge 2 scheduled for release next year and Insidious: Chapter 3 en route for 2015. More on this story as it develops, Basementites. Insidious: Chapter 3 scares up a 2015 release

Given that Insidious : Chapter 2 has earned about $150 million worldwide on a $5-million investment, it should come as no surprise that a third movie has been greenlit . Sure, one can argue that not every successful movie deserves or needs a sequel, but this is Hollywood we're talking about. Success = franchise, whether we like it or not. The good news, or bad if you're not a fan of these movies , is screenwriter Leigh Whannell is back behind the keyboard, so we'll get some continuity. What's unknown is whether or not director James Wan will return for a third go-around. Wan is hip deep directing the latest Fast and the Furious flick and has suggested he's had enough of horror. Too bad as the man is a pro, but you can't fault him for wanting to branch out. Insidious: Chapter 3 hits theatres April 3, 2015. Stick with us as the film develops. The Month of Horror Day 29: The Conjuring

Basement contributor Matt Bellamy has taken it upon himself to watch and review at least one horror movie a day for the month of October . . . because he's awesome that way! Tonight, Bellamy takes a second look at the best movie the year . . . in Jason's humble/biased opinion. If you missed experiencing the best horror release of 2013 in theatres, it's available to rent or buy now and I'd highly recommend checking this out immediately, especially seeing as Halloween i s just around the corner! I don't want to hype it up too much because yes, there are certainly lots of people who will not appreciate this movie as it's definitely out of place amongst most modern horror--this is not about blood, guts, and gore but instead good old fashioned scares! Today's younger audiences may not gravitate towards content like this and might even think it's "boring" which seems ...

The Month of Horror Day 15: Insidious

Basement contributor Matt Bellamy has taken it upon himself to watch and review at least one horror movie a day for the month of October . . . because he's awesome that way! For this entry, Bellamy takes in a horror flick that's so well regarded that it's, well, Insidious . I respect and appreciate what writer-director James Wan did with 'Insidious' more than I actually enjoyed it. Now, that's not to say that I dislike this movie but I didn't flip head over heels for it like a lot of people did--in my mind it's good but not great. I love a good haunted house movie, especially one that relies more on old-fashioned scares instead of R-rated violence and bloodshed, a personal preference that may not float your boat but that's what makes the world go round, as they say! My issues with 'Insidious' echo the same issues that many other people have with this movie:...

The Conjuring's FX wiz join's The Shelter

Yah, yah. We say we're taking a break and then not seven days later Shawn and I each post something. Wanna fight about it? Didn't think so. But this is some wicked cool news. News that should have been delivered earlier this week. But . . . well, there was sun and booze involved. Our man John Fallon's feature directorial debut The Shelter has landed yet another talented individual, one with a connection to a high-profile flick opening on July 19, my birthday, for those who care. Thomas Wilson has joined John's crew as visual effects supervisor . His previous handiwork will be on display in James Wan 's upcoming flick's The Conjuring (opens July 19) and Insidious 2 . Past efforts also include Men In Black 3 and Gangster Squad . If that's not impressive, then I don't know what is. Like we weren't already pumped enough for this movie. The Shelter , written and directed by John and starring none other than Michael Pare , rolls in January....

Tiptoe through this Insidious Chapter 2 preview

We've talked at length in The Basement about how not every movie needs a sequel. But, if done right, they can be the cat's ass. Finally, we get a preview for James Wan 's follow up to the creepily effective Insidious. It looks like Insidious Chapter 2 does what all good sequels do -- expand on the material of the first movie. And, in this case, still be scary. The haunted Lambert family seeks to uncover the mysterious childhood secret that has left them dangerously connected to the spirit world. Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne return, as does Barbara Hershey and screenwriter Leigh Whannell . With The Conjuring out in July and Insidious Chapter 2 in the fall, this will be the year of James Wan. I'm down with that. Insidious Chapter 2 opens on Friday, Sept. 13.
