When crafting a month of content targeted at the horror/Halloween crowd, it's important to provide balance between the current, more serious trend in horror, and highlight those movies which focus on how much fun the genre can be. Which is why I present to you a look back at The Monster Squad. The Monster Squad was a little-seen horror/comedy back in the day, but found its audience on home video and TV, and rightfully so. This movie is a hoot, and mixes shocks, laughs and special effects in equal measure, much like Ghostbusters had done a couple of years earlier. As written by Shane Black (who went on to write Lethal Weapon) and Fred Dekker (who directed Night of the Creeps), The Monster Squad is about a group of monster-obsessed kids who discover Dracula, the Frankenstein monster, the Mummy, the Wolfman, and a gill man have taken up residence in the neighbourhood. Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz are two of my favourite genre comedies, and that's largely due to the pairing of comedy duo Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. Those two movies, along with their British series Spaced, cemented Pegg and Frost as a creative and comedic force to be reckoned with. Now word has it Pegg and Frost are teaming up as creators and stars once again, this time for a new Amazon Prime series called Truth Seekers, and it sounds like something ripe for the two's usual antics. Truth Seekers is a half-hour comedy series about a group of paranormal investigators. I'm just going to leave this right here, so you can ponder just how much cool and funny this has the potential to be. No word yet on when Truth Seekers will start streaming. I assume they still have to shoot the damn thing. But we in The Basement are excited anyway, and look forward to catching the episodes when they appear. Source: Variety

One of cinema's greatest joys is Taika Waititi's comedic vampire tale What We Do in the Shadows. It's wonderfully witty, laugh-out-loud funny, and more than a little quirky. It's one of the few movies I wish didn't end, or at the very least had a bazillion sequels to keep me entertained. Surprise! Waititi is continuing his story, only as a new FX TV series. Sure, the cast and setting are completely different, but the same concept -- and humour -- is there. The show follows three vampires who have been roommates in Statin Island for hundreds of years, and it looks great!
