M is for Maggie and Machete Kills

It's catch-up time in The Basement as Jason, Shawn and Amy tackle a couple of somewhat recent releases that begin with the letter M. Yeah, as the headline says, they're talking about Maggie and Machete Kills.

Camp Dread director unites horror icons for Death House

That's right, our pal Harrison Smith has brought together Robert England, Danny Trejo, Dee Wallace, Doug Bradley and a many, many more of horror's familiar faces for an upcoming fright film that should please any genre fan. Long-time listeners and readers will remember Harrison has the man behind 6 Degrees of Hell and Camp Dread, two flicks Shawn and I enjoyed. And he was responsible for us interviewing Corey Feldman and Eric Roberts, which are high marks in Basement history.

Q&A: Julia Lehman

Director Rene Perez’s The Burning Dead (formerly Volcano Zombies ), starring action superstar Danny Trejo ( Machete ), is now on digital and VOD from Uncork’d Entertainment. The DVD sears home video a month later, April 7th.  Written and produced by Jeff Miller and Jason Ancona, The Burning Dead pits a horde of lava-filled zombies against a sheriff charged with the plight to rescue an estranged family from a volcano eruption. Danny Trejo plays Night Wolf, a Native American warrior who knows way too much about the curse that unearthed the coffin dodgers. We spoke to Trejo’s co-star Julia Lehman about working on one of this year’s funnest horror flicks.

Amber Heard is sexy with a gun in this Machete Kills pic

Let's face it, it's Friday night. Y'all got beer to drink, movies to watch, and places to be. So we're not going waste a lot of your time. And what better way not to waste your time than with a new pic of Amber Heard from the upcoming grindhouse sequel Machete Kills, due out Oct. 11? Here you go: Very nice. Heard plays a character called, appropriately enough, Miss San Antonio in the flick, which brings back scary dude Danny Trejo as Machete. This time he's recruited by the U.S. government to battle his way through Mexico in order to take down an arms dealer who looks to launch a weapon into space. Just cause we're all about equal opportunity here in The Basement, we're gonna close with a pic of main bad dude Mel Gibson. Yup, Mad Mel plays a bad guy in The Expendables 3 AND Machete Kills. Good for Mel! Machete Kills also stars Jessica Alba , Michelle Rodriguez , Sofia Vergara , Antonio Banderas and Charlie Sheen as the President of the United S...

Latest Machete Kills poster features a bad-ass chick

Regular listeners know one gal Shawn is gaga for -- other than his awesome wife of course -- is Michelle Rodriguez . So it's only fitting that I post this, the latest, poster for the upcoming sequel Machete Kills . That's right, Michelle Rodriguez is back as Shé, Machete's sexy and tough-as-nails sidekick. Joining her and main dude Danny Trejo are Mel Gibson, Charlie Sheen, Edward James Olmos , Cuba Gooding Jr. , Demian Bechir, Amber Heard (above), Sofia Vergara , Antonio Banderas, Alexa Vega , Vanessa Hudgens, William Sadler, Jessica Alba, Zoe Saldana, Marko Zaror , and Lady Gaga . Whew. I've said it before and will say it again, that's quite a cast. But enough about them, on to the poster: Machete Kills his way into theatres, with Rodriguez's help, on Sept. 13. Yeah, it's in Spanish. But this slick little preview does provide a first look at Robert Rodriguez 's sequel to 2010's Machete . From the footage here, if you dug Machete, you'll likely dig Machete Kills. For sure there's gonna be over-the-top violence, black comedy and a bevy of hotties like Amber Heard , Jessica Alba , Michelle Rodriguez , and Sofia Vergara . Plus there's Mel Gibson, Antonio Banderas and Charlie Sheen as the President of the United States . Some scary looking mofo named Danny Trejo is in it too. Boobs with guns in this new Machete Kills poster

It's rare when one image combines two things we enjoy so much here in The Basement -- boobs and guns! Literally, it doesn't get any cooler than this new poster from Machete Kills. The boobs and guns in question belong to Modern Family's own Sofia Vergara , who plays a character named Desdemona in the Mexploitation sequel Machete Kills . We don't really need to know much more than that. Enjoy the boobtastic image: Now that we're able to move on, Vergara is joined by Danny Trejo , Michelle Rodriguez , Mel Gibson, Jessica Alba, Demian Bichir , Amber Heard , Alexa Vega , Zoe Saldana, William Sadler, Edward James Olmos , Charlie Sheen, Elise Avellan and Electra Avellan . Mickey Rouke visits Tombstone... for your soul!

In the world of cinema, genres tend to become popular in waves.  One will see a belly laugh of romantic comedies for a couple of years, then it'll change over to caped flurry of superhero movies, then possibly flow into a beastly feast of zombie movies. And eventually, westerns come back around for popularity.  With movies like " The Lone Ranger " and " Django Unchained " kicking things off, we can expect several more six shooter specials to hit theatres.  Once such entry is " Dead in Tombstone " starring Mickey Rourke as none other than Satan. Roel Reine is directing this movie from a script by Shane Kuhn and Brendan Cowles, while Mike Elliott is the producer. The synopsis I've read seems interesting... kinda mixes in my love of horror with my love of westerns: " Guerrero Hernandez, is the leader of the Blackwater Gang of outlaws. But after freeing his half-brother, Red, from prison, Guerrer's plan to loot the mining town ...

Machete Kills gets a release date

Finally, the world can rest easy. A year of stories and sexy pics of sexy actresses later, we know when Machete Kills will be unleashed upon the world. Sept. 13. Mark it on your calendars. I'm not being sarcastic either. Machete was hardly a masterpiece, but it was still a fun ride. And it gave five-times-one-scary-dude Danny Trejo a much-needed lead role. To have him back in the saddle is a blessing. Joining him are Mel Gibson, Charlie Sheen, Edward James Olmos, Cuba Gooding Jr., Demian Bechir, Amber Heard (above), Sofia Vergara, Antonio Banderas, Alexa Vega, Vanessa Hudgens, William Sadler, Jessica Alba, Zoe Saldana, Marko Zaror, Michelle Rodriguez, Lady Gaga, Crystal McCahill and Elise and Electra Avellan. How's that for a cast!?! No word yet on a trailer, but you know where you'll find one when it arrives. Thanks to Arrow in the Head for the update.

Another sexy look at Alexa Vega in Machete Kills

Wasn't that long ago that we, fine purveyors of nerd porn that we are, brought you a Twitter pic of hottie Alexa Vega from the set of Machete Kills. Now, thanks to Rolling Stone, we've got a slightly more  . . . revealing one. Don't worry, this production still is still suitable for work -- unless your boss is a prude. It features more of the 24-year-old former spy kid in the role of Killjoy. Still no word on who Killjoy is or what part she plays in the madness that is sure to be Machete Kills. OK, I'll shut up and let you look at the picture. Vega is joined by Machete himself, Danny Trejo, Michelle Rodriguez, Mel Gibson, Jessica Alba , Demian Bichir, Amber Heard, Sofia Vergara, Zoe Saldana, William Sadler, Edward James Olmos, Charlie Sheen, Elise Avellan and Electra Avellan. Robert Rodriguez produces and Alvaro Rodriguez directs. What's it about? The U.S. government recruits Machete to battle his way through Mexico in order to take down an arms dealer ...

A couple of bad asses join Gina Carano In the Blood

We've heard nothing about the upcoming action/thriller In the Blood until today, when The Basement learned MMA star and hottie Gina Carano would be joined by a couple of bad asses like Machete and the bad guy from Avatar. Carano stars as a wife who's husband disappears while the couple are vacationing in the Caribbean. Believing he's been kidnapped, she passionately pursues the men responsible. Stpehen Lang plays Carano's hard-nosed father, who raised her with a particular set of skills, skills that make her a nightmare for bad people everywhere. Danny Trejo will play one of said bad people. John Stockwell directs the film, which begins shooting in November with a release some time in 2013. This sounds like a direct-to-DVD feature, but Carano's presence has me interested. She was the best part of Haywire, and has all the chops she needs to be the next big action heroine. Lang and Trejo are sufficiently bad ass, but our eyes are on Carano.

Alexa Vega is a Killjoy in Machete Kills

In what's really nothing more than an excuse to show a picture of a hot chick, we've scored (stole really) this image of Alexa Vega: Former Spy Kid from the upcoming grindhouse sequel Machete Kills.  The star uploaded the image to her Twitter stream, and she is certainly all growed up -- unlike me, for making comments like that. No word yet on who Killjoy is or how she fits into the whole crazy plot of Machete Kills.  Vega is joined in the mayhem by Danny Trejo, Michelle Rodriguez, Mel Gibson, Jessica Alba, Demian Bichir, Amber Heard, Sofia Vergara, Zoe Saldana, William Sadler, Edward James Olmos, Charlie Sheen, Elise Avellan and Electra Avellan. The whole thing comes from producer Robert Rodriguez of course. Machete Kills follows ex-federale Machete (Trejo), as he's recruited by the U.S. government to stop a terrorist named Mendez the Madman, who happens to be Mexico’s leading cartel dealer. The flick is due out next year.

Machete will kill with Amber Heard

Because one story about Amber Heard a week isn't enough . . . the genre fave and all-around hottie has signed on for the much-anticipated sequel, Machete Kills. And she's in good babe company too, joining series' veterans Jessica Alba and Shawn's fave, Michelle Rodriguez. Heard will play an assassin code-named Miss San Antonio. Also along for the ride are Machete himself, Danny Trejo, and legendary action dude Mel Gibson. That's right, Mel Gibson. The story, as we've previously reported, is as follows: "Machete is recruited by the U.S. Government for a mission which would be impossible for any mortal man. Machete must battle his way through Mexico to take down a madman cartel leader and an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has hatched a plan to spread war across the planet with a weapon in space. Machete takes on an army in an effort to dismantle a plan for global anarchy." Machete Kills is due out next year.

Machete is ready to kill again!

The Robert Rodriguez-produced Machete is Shawn's favourite flick of 2010 despite the presence of Fat Steven Seagal. I was entertained by it but wouldn't call it Top-10-of-any-year material. But I assure you we're both excited to see Danny Trejo return to the role he was born to play in the aptly titled Machete Kills. All we really know is the flick is scheduled to shoot in April and the plot is as follows: "Machete is recruited by the U.S. Government for a mission which would be impossible for any mortal man. Machete must battle his way through Mexico to take down a madman cartel leader and an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has hatched a plan to spread war across the planet with a weapon in space. Machete takes on an army in an effort to dismantle a plan for global anarchy." As long as Trejo is kicking ass, hot chicks are getting naked, and the third act can live up to the first two this time around, I'll be more than pleased with Machete Kil...

Micro Review: Machete

I'm late to the punch here on this one as Shawn and Anthony Michael Bosa have already watched this bad boy. But better late than never right!?! Machete is bad ass. It's a throwback to the 1970's blacksploitation era, only with a Mexican. Think of this as a more serious take on Black Dynamite. There's truckloads of action and gore and some great bit roles for the awesome likes of Don Johnson, Robert De Niro, Jeff Fahey, and Steven Seagal. Michelle Rodriguez and Jessica Alba supply the hotness. Too bad the whole silly project collapses under its own weight in the final reel. I'm glad I saw it and I did enjoy it, but I will likely not watch it again. That rates Machete a Bad for me.

Box Office Report: The American Outpaces The Mexican

George Clooney's hitman tale The American captured the top spot at the box office with a $16.4 million debut over the long Labour Day weekend. Since opening Wednesday, the Focus Features release has taken in $19.5 million. The 20th Century Fox revenge romp Machete and Sony's heist thriller Takers were in a duel for second-place. Machete led with $14 million from Friday to Monday. Takers followed with $13.5 million. Takers" which had been the No. 1 movie the previous weekend, raised its 10-day total to $40 million. The weekend's other new wide release, Drew Barrymore's romance Going the Distance from Warner Bros., opened at No. 5 with $8.6 million. It was a typically quiet Labuor Day period for Hollywood, a transition weekend as summer blockbuster season ends and young audiences prepare for the start of the school year. With $3.9 million over the long weekend, Universal's animated hit Despicable Me raised its haul to $241.3 million, surpa...
