This week's trip into the Marvel Cinematic Universe sees us jumping from World War Two to the 1990's via 2019's " Captain Marvel "... Vers is a Kree soldier without a past- a hazy history blocked by a traumatic incident years prior.  Fighting against the Skrull army, she finds herself crash landing on Earth in 1995, and confronted by who she really is... and what her full potential could be... This was the first MCU movie with a female lead character and performer.  It's a decent enough effort... but it has some serious flaws that weaken it greatly when compared to others in the franchise. The story isn't bad.  Not great, though.  It's actually pretty standard fare... that unfortunately relies heavily on a rather outdated- and problematic trope.  Let's see if you recognize it: A white skinned soldier is fighting in a war against a race described as being savages.  White skinned soldier finds themselves surrounded by the "savages...

The motion-picture event of the century is now upon us, and the culmination of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has reached endgame.... The Avengers: Endgame that is! There's only one movie hitting theatres this weekend, and it's expected to be a doozy. That's right the 20th -- count 'em 20th -- entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe hits today: Captain Marvel. Captain Marvel is the first Marvel movie with a female hero front and centre. This has, for reasons that continue to mystify us here in The Basement, angered many white males, especially those lacking in self esteem... which seems like pretty much all of them.

This weekend, moviegoers will say good bye to an honoured "friend," one who has entertained them through at least 10 feature films. We're sure there will be tears, and a few moments of sadness in cinemas the next few days. Except for Jason and Shawn, who haven't seen even one of Tyler Perry's Madea movies. It's nothing personal; it's just not their thing.

A third, and I assume final, trailer for Captain Marvel has appeared online, and it continues to paint and impressive picture of the upcoming Marvel Studios flick. For one, this Special Look trailer has a boat load of action, and exposition, giving audiences a better idea of what to expect when the flick opens in March. And it brings back one of the MCU's most beloved characters: Agent Coulson.

Truth be told, the reality of a Captain Marvel movie had me at Brie Larson. She's a damn fine actress who's already proven her worth in a big-budget blockbuster (Kong: Skull Island) and looks the part of superhero. Period. Note the lack of anything sexist in the above paragraph . . .

Ah, the 90s. An era that saw me graduate film school, travel the world, meet interesting people, and kinda like them. As cool as my 90s experience was, it's nothing compared to the cool that comes with the lovely Brie Larson and this equally as lovely trailer for the much anticipated Captain Marvel.
