Bill Paxton on board for Training Day TV series

That's right, Training Day -- the gritty Denzel Washington flick from like 15 years ago -- is becoming a TV series. And get this, it's actually a SEQUEL to the movie. Because if any movie screamed for a sequel, it's Training Day. And a TV sequel to boot. Yes, I am being sarcastic. I say this as someone who absolutely loved Training Day, and still gives it a watch from time to time.

Review: Nightcrawler

Having faced a barrage of B-grade genre movies for so many years, this Basement critic decided to take a breather and step into more . . . refined . . . entertainment. The first dance was with Gone Girl. The second is all about one sociopath's pursuit of the American dream. It's called Nightcrawler. How's it? Stick with me! When Lou Bloom, a driven man desperate for work, muscles into the world of L.A. crime journalism,  he blurs the line between observer and participant.

Matt Bellamy versus Edge of Tomorrow

Edge of Tomorrow deals with the idea of not exactly time travel , per say but something more along of the lines of "time repetition"; re-living the same day/event over, and over, and over again. For the sake of scientific conversation though, let's take a trip back in time to a very specific date: Monday, May 23, 2005. In my very best Neil deGrasse Tyson voice: "Come with me..."

Live, die, repeat in this Edge of Tomorrow trailer

Between Godzilla and Doug Liman 's Edge of Tomorrow, Warner Bros' is looking pretty damn good for the summer of 2014. Granted, I preferred the title All You Need Is Kill over Edge of Tomorrow, but what the deuce do I know.  Tom Cruise and the yum that is Emily Blunt star in this sci-fi tale about a soldier who finds himself in a time loop of the last day of his battle with aliens. Think Groundhog Day with guns and alien invaders, and you still won't come close to how awesome this movie looks. No disrespect to Groundhog Day. Edge of Tomorrow also stars Bill Paxton , Kick Gurry , Dragomir Mrsic, Charlotte Riley , Jonas Armstrong and Franz Drameh . The flick opens June 6. Jason versus 2 Guns

Nothing says the work week is over like a couple of brews, some violent bloodshed and a pair of boobies. Throw in a cast that includes Denzel Washington , Mark Wahlberg , Bill Paxton , and the hotness that is Paula Patton (and her boobs) and you've got a winner, right? Right? A DEA agent and a naval intelligence officer find themselves on the run after a botched attempt to infiltrate a drug cartel . While fleeing, they learn the secret of their shaky alliance: Neither knew that the other was an undercover agent . Truth is, 2 Guns isn't as much fun as it should've been. Yes, Washington and Wahlberg have a great chemistry, Paula Patton is hot and shows her boobs, and Paxton owns every scene he's in. But, and this is a heavy but for an action flick, there just isn't enough on-screen carnage to satisfy my end-of-the-week bloodlust. Yes, there's a lot to enjoy in 2 Guns. And I did like my one watch for sure. But I'm not sold on the idea of watching...

Girl's Eye View: 2 Guns

Allow me to quickly introduce myself: My name is Kara, and I live over at www.karaschatter.com . I have no experience in the movie industry, other than watching and appreciating them. I thought I would offer up my movie reviewing skills, or lack thereof, to The Basement to give readers a female perspective on movies, new, old, good, and bad.  Oh Denzel. Oh Mark. Oh my sanity! I’m not sure what there isn’t to like about this movie; there’s great acting by a couple of Hollywood’s finest, gun-slingin’ action, drugs, money - How can it get any better? 2 Guns was a great movie for what it is. It doesn’t confuse you, there’s no twisty plot twists, just good ol’ fashion fun. Denzel Washington plays an undercover DEA agent and Mark Wahlberg plays an undercover Navy SEAL. Neither of them have any idea but somehow join forces to rob a Mexican drug lord’s cash-stash at a bank. Shit hits the fan and well, they stick together to figure what the F is going on. ...

A first look at NECA's Aliens action figures

I know what I want under the Christmas tree next year, and I don't care if I'll be . . . too old for toys. Wanna fight about it!?! Toymaker NECA unveiled today the first images of their upcoming Aliens action-figure line, and they are bad to the ass! The figures include Hicks, who was played by Michael Biehn, Bill Paxton's Hudson and an alien warrior. Hicks and Hudson are nearly 7″ tall, feature over 30 points of articulation and come with multiple heads. I'm sooooo glad they included the "Game over, man. Game over" look! As for the alien warrior, it’s 9″ tall and has more than 30 points of articulation, including a bendable tail, hinged jaw, and sliding inner mouth. NECA's Aliens line is expected to hit a toy store shelf near you in the spring. Props to Collider for finding these bad boys!

The Month of Horror Day 20: Frailty

Basement contributor Matt Bellamy has taken it upon himself to watch and review at least one horror movie a day for the month of October . . . because he's awesome that way! Today, Bellamy wants to know if you have what it takes to kill a demon. Now here is a horror movie where it's not so much about freaky things jumping out to scare you, or unstoppable killing machines murdering innocent people (well, not exactly) because this is the type of horror movie where horrible things happen with the intent to disturb you and make you feel uncomfortable. Directed by, and starring Bill Paxton, this is the story of a single father of two pre-teen boys in Texas who one day receives a vision from the heavens which instructs him to hunt down "demons" disguised as regular human beings. This once upstanding, and responsible father soon becomes obsessed with his mission and enlists his sons to aid hi...

Micro Review: Haywire

As good as parts of Haywire are, the whole just isn't as satisfying as I'd hoped. And that's a shame too as director Steven Soderbergh brings his trademark visual style and retro vibe to what could have been a solid action flick. And he cast MMA babe and all around badass chick Gina Carano. Unfortunately, aside from a few signature bone-breaking moves and looking really, really good, Carano is given very little to do here. Nor is Soderbergh's awesome supporting cast. Bill Paxton? Fuck yeah! Michael Douglas? Still a class act. There's some good fights, but the action never escalates, nor do we fear for our lovely leading lady's safety. There's no doubt she'll pull through, and the film ends more with a thud than a bang. I can't wait to see Carano in another action movie, one worthy of her talents. The Expendables 3 maybe? That said, Haywire gets a Bad.

Wanna see Gina Carano kick Michael Fassbender's ass?

Then the trailer for Haywire was made just for you. And it caters to those of us who have no issue watching a beautiful woman smash someone's face in, especially when said woman is MMA and Gladiator star Gina Carano. Sure, on the surface this looks like The Bourne Identity with a chick instead of Matt Damon. But the action looks badass and the supporting cast includes, in addition to Fassbender, Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, Antonio Banderas, Channing Tatum and Bill Fucking Paxton. Oh, and acclaimed director Stephen Soderbergh directed. That brings some class to what otherwise would have been a director-to-DVD feature. There might also be concerns about Carano's acting chops but really, who cares? Look at her. And look at her kick ass. The film hits theatres in January. I'm pretty sure I will see it one day.
