The Drunken Review: Victor Crowley

What the hell, Jay!?! Another Drunken Review? The heck is a matter with you? You on vacation or something? As a matter of fact, I am. And it's almost over. Now piss off and let me review (ish) Victor Crowley before I pass out, would yah! Not a question. A statement.

Jason versus Digging Up the Marrow

I've said this on the show, and I will say it again here: at some point in a filmmaker's career he or she will want to make a movie about making movies. Why? Because making movies is fun and people are interested in it. But is it an interesting enough topic for a feature film? Well, when left in the hands of a horror-movie director like Adam Green, and when said horror-movie director decides to make a fake documentary featuring himself and his crew going in search of monsters, it just might be. So, you know, stick with me!

From The Corner: Frozen (2010)

I'm not going to lie- this movie SOUNDED good and interesting, and I was intrigued to see how someone would handle a story with such a limited number of cast and locations. Joe, Dan and Dan's girlfriend, Parker are skiing and decided to bribe the chair lift operator to allow them one last run- despite warnings of a severe storm heading in. Due to a bad timing and miscommunication, the three wind up stranded on the chair lift halfwayup the mountain. The trio soon learn that freezing isn't the only way to die in the cold night air.. .

The August Special: Hatchet III

With great power comes great responsibility, which is why Jason and Shawn are back in the podcasting business with this latest episode for your ear holes. This time around the Basement Boys talk movies. SURPRISE! A whole bunch of movies before diving into the main event , a review of the third installment in Adam Green 's Hatchet series. Appropriately enough, it's called Hatchet III . What's it about? Killing and shit. But seriously, here's the official synopsis: a search and recovery team heads into the haunted swamp to pick up the pieces from Hatchet II, and Marybeth (Danielle Harris) learns the secret to ending the voodoo curse that has left Victor Crowley (Kane Hodder) haunting and terrorizing Honey Island Swamp for decades. Does this latest entry in the series live up to the first two, even without Green in the director's chair? (he's back as screenwriter) Stick with us as the August Special lands tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. pacific. Now for...

The Basement vs Hatchet III

That's right, bitches! Shawn and I are sobering up long enough to share our thoughts on the latest installment of a franchise we know most Basementites are down with -- Hatchet III! You know: Victor Crowley, Kane Hodder, Danielle Harris, and scores of awesome and gory deaths? Hatchet? III? For the uninitiated, here's what the third flick is about: a search and recovery team heads into the haunted swamp to pick up the pieces (body parts from Hatchet II we'd assume) and Marybeth learns the secret to ending the voodoo curse that has left Victor Crowley haunting and terrorizing Honey Island Swamp for decades. We'll be recording our thoughts next week and launching this mofo before the end of the month. Then it's only a few short weeks before we give birth to something we like to call Season Five of Film Reviews from the Basement. More on that as the date nears. Stick with us!

Hatchet III trailer is a bloody good mess

Man oh man, this preview for Hatchet III was so worth taking a break from the tequila for. There's Red Band trailers , and there's this trailer for Hatchet III. It has balls . . . literally! Hatchet creator Adam Green has handed the directing duties over to BJ McDonnell for this one, but the trademark Hatchet gore and humour is alive and well. As are series vets Danielle Harris (pictured above) and Kane Hodder . A search and recovery team heads into the haunted swamp to pick up the pieces and Marybeth learns the secret to ending the voodoo curse that has left Victor Crowley haunting and terrorizing Honey Island Swamp for decades.  Hatchet III hits theatres June 14. Teaser trailer, release date for Hatchet III

I don't think any self-respecting horror fan can call themselves a self-respecting horror fan without watching Adam Green 's old-school slasher flick Hatchet and its sequel, the appropriately titled Hatchet II. Although far from perfect, Hatchet and Hatchet II bring fun back to the slasher subgenre with over-the-top gore and character-driven humour. And they've got a great antihero in Victor Crowley . I mean really great. Suffice to say we in The Basement are pretty damn excited that Hatchet III -- which feels like it's been filming for fucking ever -- hits theatres June 14. That's not far off, and that's fine by us. But wait, there's more. We've scored the teaser trailer for director BJ McDoonnell's film. So why not watch it now: This time around a search and recovery team heads into the haunted swamp to pick up the pieces and Marybeth ( Danielle Harris ) learns the secret to ending the voodoo curse that has left Victor Crowley h...

Kane Hodder and Danielle Harris back for Hatchet 3

We reported just a week or two ago that Hatchet 3 will shoot for a 2013 release date. Now we've got confirmation via HorrorMovies.ca that Victor Crowley himself, Kane Hodder, and his favourite victim Marybeth, Danielle Harries, are also returning for another go-round. Here's more from the official press release. Dark Sky Films and Ariescope Pictures are pleased to announce that Kane Hodder and Danielle Harris have joined the cast of HATCHET 3, the next exciting chapter in the horror saga of swamp-dwelling killer Victor Crowley, which will be written and produced by Adam Green and directed by BJ McDonnell. Kane Hodder portrayed the evil Crowley in 2006’s original Hatchet and continued in the role in Hatchet II. In that 2010 hit, Danielle Harris took over the role of Marybeth, the young woman who, at the movie’s climax, managed to escape Crowley’s clutches (and, apparently, kill him). The new movie continues where Hatchet II left off, as a search and recovery t...

Victor Crowley will kill again in Hatchet 3

And we in The Basement say hells yeah!! Hatchet 2 didn't perform all that well at the box office when it was released last October, but it isn't so much the film's fault as the MPAA. The rating board failed to give it an R and unrated cuts were pulled from theatres. In other words, it didn't stand a chance. But the crew over at Arrow in the Head report Hatchet 2 has done well for itself on DVD and VOD and, if we might editorialize, deservedly so. Shawn and I gave the film a solid Good on the show several weeks back. What does that mean? Hatchet 3 is on its way bitches! ArieScope Pictures is co-producing with Dark Sky and writer/director Adam Green will be back. Here's what Green had to say, according to AITH: "We already had a possible story-line for Hatchet 3 worked out before we began shooting Hatchet II, so my cast, crew and I are beyond excited to see that the story and legacy of Victor Crowley will indeed continue. For a little indie movie t...

Jason and Shawn review: Red Hill and Hatchet 2

Red Hill Jason: There's a lot to like in this lean post-modern western from the land Down Under. The villain, Jimmy, is one of the best, baddest and toughest hombres to grace the screen in some time. And the character's back story actually makes him a compelling part of this movie. So much so that he overshadows the film's hero, Shane. It's the lack of a strong main character that hurts Red Hill the most. I loved the film's action and violence and it looks great, but the weak protagonist has me giving it a Bad. Shawn: This movie starts off pretty slow but has a nice build, culminating in the worst first day on the job our hero could ever have. The build up certainly didn't let me down. The action scenes and kills are really good and brutal. The bad guy, Jimmy, is awesome. I was definitely entertained by this well-made movie and will see it again. I give it a Good. Hatchet 2 Jason: Writer/director Adam Green comes dangerously close to dropping the ball wi...

Next on the chopping block: Red Hill and Hatchet 2

A small-town sheriff facing down a ruthless, bloodthirsty outlaw certainly sounds like the makings for a good Western. And that's exactly the premise of director Patrick Hughes's Red Hill. The only difference is the film takes place in present day Australia. Red Hill is our first film on the chopping block tonight. The other is Adam Green's Hatchet 2. Which is a sequel to Adam Green's Hatchet, don't you know? Hatchet is a Basement favourite, but Shawn and I were less than thrilled with Green's follow up Frozen. Does the director redeem himself with Hatchet 2? Stick with us! By the way, the hottie above is Danielle Harris. She stars in Hatchet 2. Just wanted to justify putting a picture of a pretty girl on this page. But the fun doesn't stop with the films. Being movie geeks, Shawn and I have spent a lot of time in movie theatres. Some of the visits have been good, some bad, and a handful have been ugly. With theatre attendance on the decline, we though...

Jason and Shawn review: The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets' Nest and Frozen

The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest Jason: Wow this is a lot of movie! This is a fitting finale to a fine trilogy that ups the ante in terms of suspense and even action. There's some great edge-of-your-seat moments and nice character touches. Best of all events from the last two movies really pay off here. Everyone gets what's coming to them and there's even a surprise or two. Fans of the series will love it. Those who are new to the material will be completely lost. I'm giving it a Good, and will be buying the trilogy now that it's complete. Shawn: This being the third installment it was by far the best one. I still found all the characters shallow, weak, and didn’t have ANY attachment to them whatsoever. Except for the supervillian. They could have played that up a lot more. It ties every other boring entry up nicely without much confusion. It is a well made series, but still sucked in my opinion. I am, however, willing to give this one a high ...

Next on the chopping block: The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets' Nest and Frozen

Shawn will break out the whiskey and shot glasses tonight as he celebrates the final review Film Reviews From the Basement will do in the Millennium Trilogy as the executioner's axe falls on The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets' Nest. The first two films, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and The Girl Who Played With Fire, are his most hated of all time, which doesn't bode well for Hornets' Nest. He gave each an Ugly. What will he give the last film in the series? Stick with us! Note: Jason will review the movie too. He gave the previous two a Good. Then the Basement Dwellers set their collective sites on Adam Green's Frozen. Jason and Shawn dug the writer/director's slasher film Hatchet, but this movie's about three people trapped on a ski lift. Is Frozen the next Buried? Tune in tonight and find out. And stay tuned in for a lengthy discussion on remakes, complete with audio clips of course, the latest movie news and music by Subplot A, The Sleeveless Teas...

Micro Review: Hatchet

Revisiting Adam Green's Hatchet years after its release I had forgotten how much fun the film is. More so than any remake or retread Hollywood has produced lately, this film captures the look and feel of 80's slasher movies in every gory detail. It's campy, corny and bad, but in the best possible way. Hatchet knows it's a loving tribute to 80s horror, and plays up to that fact. Writer-director Green has also created a new horror icon in Victor Crowley, whose back story and penchant for ripping people apart guarantee he'll be murdering horny, partying teens for years to come. A Good review from The Basement on this one.

Hatchet 2 Teaser Trailer Is Unleased!

Everyone who saw Adam Green's awesome 80's slasher movie throwback Hatchet raise your hand. That's everyone? Good. That film was a loving tribute to Friday the 13th and every generic gore fest that came in the wake of the original Halloween. It was low on plot and big on gore. Lotsa gore. Great gore. It was gorerific. It also introduced us to Victor Crowley, who has all the makings of a great horror icon. Now Green is back with the inevitable sequel. I'm sure more heads will roll. Literally. Hatchet 2  follows Marybeth (Danielle Harris) as she escapes from the clutches of Crowley (Kane Hodder), learns the truth about his curse, and heads back into the haunted New Orleans swamp to seek revenge for her family and kill Crowley once and for all. Take a gander at the teaser below, and prepare for the film's limited release Oct. 1 . . . just in time for the premier of our radio show!
